Valkyria: Azure Revolution Heads West on PS4, Xbox One, and PS Vita

Sega has announced a western release for Valkyria: Azure Revolution.

The latest in the alternative, tactical war series will launch in North America and Europe sometime in Q2 of next year, across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PS Vita – and it will be known as Valkyria Revolution in the west.

The game will get a retail version on consoles, while the PS Vita version is digital only. If you’re unfamiliar with the game, it changes up the turn-based tactical shooting mechanics in the original three games for a mash-up of real-time combat and tactical strategy mechanics.

Sega also explained why “Azure” was dropped from the game’s title:

1) The way the first Valkyria title was localized had a really nice ring to it: Senjou no Varukyuria (lit. Valkryia of the Battlefield) became Valkyria Chronicles. When faced with Aoki Kakumei no Varukyuria (lit. Valkyria of the Blue Revolution), a literal translation was unwieldy, and difficult from a graphic design standpoint as well, and adding in extra punctuation (e.g. Valkyria: Azure Revolution) didn’t help either. So we stuck to a similar cadence of the first Valkyria title and went with a two-word title. Plus:

2) Given how vastly different the two games are (Revolution drops the turn-based gameplay, takes place in a different time period, different world, different almost everything), the new name helps to ensure the two titles stood equal but apart from each other.

Here’s a rundown on the game, via Sega:

The Valkyria, the embodiment of death is returning to the battlefield in Valkyria Revolution and players will have to do – and sacrifice – whatever is necessary to seek out their vengeance. Previously reported as “Valkyria: Azure Revolution,” the newly titled Valkyria Revolution will release in the west both physically and digitally for the PlayStation®4 and Xbox One™, and as a digital-only title for the PlayStation®Vita. Valkyria Revolution is also in a sense a revolution from the traditional Valkyria Chronicles universe, as it’s set in an alternate timeline based on the European industrialization era and eschews the traditional turn-based strategy gameplay for a new hybrid of real-time combat and tactical strategy across battlefields. Valkyria Revolution will be available in Q2 of 2017.

All it takes is a single spark to start the inferno of war, and in the story of Valkyria Revolution, players will experience that firsthand. Five lifelong friends consumed by personal revenge plunge an entire continent into a terrible war, sacrificing the lives of countless innocents for a cause based on twisted half-truths and outright lies. This “Circle of Five” use their combined influence in their political and military positions to motivate their small, economically blockaded homeland to rise up and become a powerful resistance against its imperialist oppressors. Will the Circle of Five be remembered as heroic liberators, or will their selfish motives expose them as traitorous conspirators who sacrificed untold lives just to carry out a personal vendetta? Players will watch this history unfold in Valkyria Revolution and find out the truth behind the events…

Valkyria Revolution Features:

  • A Brush with Death – Turning the tide of battle in Valkyria Revolution is Brunhilde, one of the last of the ancient and powerful Valkyrur, magical beings with near limitless power. She’s bound by oath to the enemy forces and players will have to figure out how to defeat her.
  • Prepare for LeGION – Valkyria Revolution has a brand new battle system that mixes real-time combat and tactical strategy. Players can take control of the battlefield using brazen combos or cunning tactics and finding a balance between them is the key to excelling in skirmishes.
  • The Ingenuity of War – Through adversity comes great engineering, and with a besieged homeland, players will have upgrade their existing weapons through branching customization paths.
  • A New Painterly Look – Valkyria Revolution has a refined look thanks to the new Gouache rendering engine, giving the graphics a unique canvas texture.
  • Classic Composer – Valkyria Revolution has a vibrant soundtrack brought to life by the incredibly talented composer Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger, Stella Glow)

Valkyria Revolution is not just a new chapter in the legendary Valkyria series, but a whole new entry with new characters, a new world, and new gameplay mechanics. The static, turn-based battlefield has become an action-oriented stage for devastating melee combos, lethal ranged attacks, and strategic shifts to turn the tide of battle, all while exploring the incredible history of the Circle of Five.

Xbox One release? Did not expect that all. Not that I’m complaining though I’ll gladly welcome it to my collection on there.

  • Lucky

    Yay vita, boo digital.

Too bad I can’t use my modded vita with it, it could probably use the overclock.

Edit: Anyone else get Bladestorm vibes from the description?

  • Will3316

This is good news. I hope the new combat system works.

  • TheCynicalReaper
  • Mr0303

Good job, SEGA. I’m not sure how good this game will be with the drastic change in gameplay, but I’ll get it to support the series.

If there was a cross save and a physical release for Vita I would’ve double dipped, but now I’ll just get it for the PS4.

  • Grayares Fakcot

they will probably lose more money trying to support the xbox one version since nobody is gonna buy it

  • totenglocke

Good start, Sega, now what about the PC version?

  • Master Bating

    “Xbox One”

  • Jumanji Joe

The xbone audience will be to busy still trying to figure out where to put the vhs tapes to play a jrpg.

  • DrearierSpider

Right? Especially considering the lack of a PC release, when you take into account how well the Valkyria Chronicles port sold (currently just shy of 900,000 on Steam Spy).

  • DrearierSpider

It’s been feeling like they were all talk no walk with supporting PC since the port of the first game, which is strange considering how well it sold.

  • Sigma

PC Gamers are hated by developers and other gamers alike

  • Sigma

XBONE gamers will be more like What’s a JRPG? More of that weeb pony shit fuk dat MOAR GEARS SCORPIO XBOX IS DA BEST BOX….

And this is why XBOX is losing ground and credibility as a gaming brand.

  • DrearierSpider
  • Kiryu

Wow,Sega is on a roll,2017 will be expensive.

  • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

Awesome news, it’s great the franchise doesn’t stay confined to one system. Happy for people with an XBOX One, I’m getting this on PSV but hopefully there’ll be a Steam version somewhere down the road. VC of all series deserves all the exposure it can get~.

  • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

Lack of a PC release so far. I mean, if there’s an XBOX One version a Steam one can’t be too far away~.

  • Brimfyre

    I’m fine with either honestly.

  • NuclearKangaroo

why must you break my heart senpai?

  • NuclearKangaroo

    -no PC port
    -not a SRPG

jesus SEGA, what the hell are you doing?

  • Michael Richardson

Nah. Gameplay videos have all looked terrible.

  • Nuku Nuku Natsume Mishima

I cant wait to see how this game will be censored.XD

  • sanic

    I’ll take 7

  • JFpaes15

I don’t mind the game having an Xbox version, but what I find it really fucking strage is the game having an Xbox version, and NOT having a PC version, like, what the shit is going on there SEGA? Did you hit your fucking head or something?

  • djluke_1993

That’s Sega Europe someone asked. They are pathetic allround when it comes to anything.

  • djluke_1993

I’d say that you wouldn’t be too far from that since the PC side of Segas sales are the strongest for them. So I’d expect to see how it fares on consoles them release it on Steam.

  • Master Bating

    Please stop projecting

  • Master Bating

    Hopefully you’re right

  • Guin

This. The only ones I know who still stick with Xbox are indoctrinated dudebros and 15 and below ‘murrikan kiddies.

  • Guin

I’ve always preferred what I get. I am proud of being part of the problem.

  • Guin

I am cautiously awaiting this one. Hope they fixed the gameplay from that lackluster demo.

  • Totally willing to give this game a chance. i don’t want this series to stay eternally dead, a spin off is fine with me.

  • Tubsiwub

Wasn’t this confirmed for us before? Oh well, excited.

  • machariel00

I wish I hadn’t played Valkyria Chronicles on PS3 originally even just for the loading time difference compared to PC version.

  • machariel00

At least Xbone is relevant. They opted for Vita version rather than PC version.

  • DrearierSpider

Ya, I realize how awful SEGA and Atlus have been for Europe, but that shouldn’t really come into play with PC where everything is digital.

  • tetrisdork

I’m buying it on Xbox One.

  • It don’t have a concrete release date yet so I assume that it is coming to PC.

  • I’m sure it is coming to PC.

  • How are you enjoying the last guardian? :)

  • I will get the PC version.

  • Cats736

This game would fit in well with all the RPGs and stuff the Vita has. A PC version will come.

  • Sigma

I didn’t get the Last Guardian I’m playing Rez Infinite

  • Sigma

You keep using that word, I don’t think it means what you think it means. I an beloved by all.

  • Sigma

I cringe when I see grown ass men call the PlayStation “Gaystation”

  • Evja

And yet no VC2 remaster in sight..

  • Grayares Fakcot

i seriously hope you are ironically having an xbox one but not a ps4

  • Grayares Fakcot

what about people calling halo gaylo

  • catazxy

Waiting for a PC version, but until then, I’m curios to see how bad it runs on my vita.

  • Uncle Ocelot

    It’ll probably come afterwards.

  • Tristan (Chili1)

If they were hated there wouldn’t be releases at all.

  • totenglocke

Interestingly, at least for graphics, the PS4 version is the best version.

  • totenglocke

And no western release of VC3.

  • Guin

Other than apparent homophobia and thinly veiled xenophobia, I can’t see why Playstation consoles can be considered “Gay.”

  • Minuteworld92

Sega always hits their head. That’s why their retarded

  • scemar

who are they even kidding by not announcing the PC version along the rest?

we’ve seen this charade play too many times to fall for it

they’ll announce it later after they secure console purchases first

  • Master Bating

If by “all” you mean Sonys Marketing Department.

  • Good move as the last guardian is a waste of money.

  • Chocolate ISISCream

How mad are you that there’s an Xbox One release but not PC? Man, literally get fucked.

  • You want to have sex with him?

  • To be fair a good number of PS4 owners hate weeb shit as well. All they want to play is movie SJW games like the last of us.

  • Adohleas

Sega Europe handles all of the games on steam, this news came from Sega America. Unfortunately we will have to wait till Sega Europe decides to announce its inevitable release date on PC.

  • Phasmatis75

A lot of you need to go watch the gameplay trailers. They’re god awful and I like JRPGs.

  • NuclearCherries

Cautiously looking forward to this. I’m a slut for Valkyria Chronicles but this is too different.

I’ll just have to see how it turns out.

  • Toki

Yeah I’m skipping it unless I can play as mega milk

  • Ecolink

“for graphics”. how so? id imagine frame rate and resolution would be significantly better on PC

  • 草薙 素子

Literally NG’s best comment writer. Like, fuck the copy-pasted articles, I come here just to see you shit on people and get my daily laugh.

  • totenglocke

They added improved textures and I believe better anti-aliasing in the PS4 version.

  • chaoguy

When it happened in the first Valkyria game, they did DLC for her own campaign, complete with beach scene.

  • tetrisdork

I do own an Xbox One. Unironically. Pretty decent system. It is my personal preference, as Koei Tecmo hasn’t released DOAX3 stateside* (and probably never will) and, more importantly, Sony hasn’t released a PS4 bundle that satisfied me.

*Yes, I know Play-Asia and importing, but KT has the courage to release wave upon wave of skimpy DoA5 costumes but not making DOAX3 even a digital only release Stateside speaks.

  • Nagato

Don’t you mean “get shit on by people”?

And assuming you are who I think you are, you should join back in on the shitposting sometime.

  • Nagato

    Yup, that’s exactly why.

It’s easy to forget how Sega’s divisions pretty much work seperately from one another like that:

-Sega of America releases in the US
-Deep Silver publishes physical releases ih Europe (on SoA’s behalf, I believe)
-Sega Europe mostly keeps to PC-minded games and ports

  • ashikenshin

yeah, it sucks. Hopefully there is a PC version down the line

  • Laughing my ass off how it went to Xbone but not PC

Hopefully you guys made a petition already to start begging!

  • I write the majority of the news and I don’t have the time to write a legitimately long-form post for these sorts of things, so to make up for it I’ll put the blurb from the game. I dunno what else to say, lol

  • DrearierSpider

LMFAO, butthurt peasant syndrome never ceases to be entertaining.

  • Sigma

How exactly is The Last of us an SJW game?

  • Sigma

I haven’t heard that in years but then again I haven’t cared about Halo since the month I spent on the first game back in 2001

  • s_fnx

    SEGA doesn’t care about PC.

  • stullz

Working fan patch/translation exists thankfully. :)

  • totenglocke

Why am I not surprised that you know this? 😂

  • Master Bating
  • DDD-kun

Cautious about this one. Direction shift hasn’t excited me, weapons or ridiculous stature are kinda meh, and the gameplay seemed too clunky and slow. But that’s the bird’s eye view. If I can get hands on the demo, we’ll see what it shapes up to be.

  • DDD-kun

Bonus: Be nice to play the land-conquering “bad guys” for once.

  • TheCynicalReaper

Your response sickens me but your avatar keeps me from hating you.
    Good day sir

  • s_fnx

Nice. Now where’s Vanquish, Bayonetta, Yakuza, Virtua Fighter and so on?

  • You are joking right? The game was written by Neil Druckmann. Do you even know who Neil Druckmann is?

  • Master Bating

  • s_fnx

In 20 years if we’re lucky.

  • Master Bating

    I’d say about a year

  • Guin

    That’s fine. I’d rather have VC3 instead.

  • Sigma

    You have no life

  • So you don’t know who he is. Do some research next time kid.

  • Slo

What’s the difference? I like neither.

Active Time Combat. Jee, the last time I heard those words like those we got non stop shit FF games. I might still be interested if it makes it over here sans censorshit but knowing my luck over the past few years now, I’ll get pickles balls deep in my ATB.

  • LurkerJK

Thats what they say, the truth is that they dont want you finding aaaaallll the negative reactions to the demos and the “WTF THIS IS NOT VALKIRIA CHRONICLES” rants everyone got off their chests already when you google the original name

  • LurkerJK

Sadly the decisions are made in japan, and in japan gaming is pretty much mobile oriented

thank god you are getting ps4 and xbone versions, if the vita was as popular as the old psp it would probably be vita exclusive, and in any case they dont give 2 shits about PC

The game sold well in steam *on the west*, it will take years for the news to reach Japanese headquarters and cause a reaction

  • ScarredBushido

so many people crying about the lack of PC. get a ps4.

  • flashn00b

Well, the 2014 PC release of the original Valkyria Chronicles is mostly the reason why this game even exists in the first place. More likely than not, SEGA’s financial situation doesn’t allow for the porting of Azure Revolution

  • Ckarasu

I get what you’re going at, but the author and content are separate. Not a huge fan of TLoU, but it doesn’t have nearly enough “Fuck straight people and their privilege” to be a SJW game. You can make weak implications on what is presented, sure, but it doesn’t carry much weight. TLoU isn’t a SJW game because it doesn’t espouse the toxic SJW ideals.

Doesn’t mean Druckmann is or isn’t an SJW, mind you. But sometimes you gotta separate the author and their works.

  • So you admit that you know nothing of TLOU or Druckmann. But guess what I do. See this video:

Neil stated that he made TLOU to be a feminist game and women like Anita Sarkeesian inspired the game. So yes Druckmann is a filthy SJW and the last of us is a shitty SJW game.

  • Ckarasu

I don’t give two shits about inspiration or supposed stupidity. What I care about is what actually is in the game, like any sane person would. I have played that game, and while not the best thing since sliced bread(as some might want others would believe), it is not SJW. You know why?

    1. No dumb “straight people are cancer” bullshit. Hardly anyone even mentions the word “straight person”, if at all.
    2. No talk of privilege.
    3. A straight character is the main character, and while he’s kinda a dick at times, he still does right by what he believes in.
    4. It actually has gameplay.

Point number one is typically the one that decides it, though point 2 is pretty close. And TLoU doesn’t check those boxes. Don’t assume shit, bro. That’s what the “SJWs” do. I played that game from beginning to end. It may or may not have been written by an “SJW”, but it’s not an SJW game. It just does not have the signature stupidity of that. Can’t say the same about his other works, as I have not played them. Let’s not resort to ignorance just to try to prove a point, yes? I might even know about the game than you do, given that I’ve played it to the end and am not freaking biased about it. I wouldn’t even call it particularly great.

  • Sigma

I’m old enough to be your father loser

  • You don’t act like a 50 year old. You act like another juvenile fanboy that hate reality.

  • Calm down you feminist. The fact is TLOU is a SJW game it is just that you just can’t see the signs or are too ignorant to.

  • Ckarasu

Bruh, I do this casually. In fact, with the saltiness of NicheGamer’s fanbase from the ToS update, I am actually quite content. It’s a good day. It’s almost as good as all the twitter meltdowns over Trump’s victory. Those were great…

If you don’t have evidence from the game, then say so. I’m not interested in dumb back and forths from someone who can’t even separate an author from their works(which is criticism 101). Post evidence from the game where it talks about privilege of straight/white people, how terrible they are, or whatever. Don’t argue on bad faith.

  • The creator said that the game is a SJW game but you feminist don’t accept any truth that goes against your world view. But whatever you SJW cucks can have this site as you guys corrpted it with your ignorance.

  • Ckarasu

You can call me a SJW, but that doesn’t make it true. The fact that I mocked Hillary supporters for their reactions from Trump winning would say otherwise(a truth you want to ignore, for some reason). I don’t really care what you say at this point, as you just keep prattling on without proof. You have never cited a god damned thing IN THE GAME to support your argument. Nothing. You are, in no way, better than even the SJWs you hate. You can’t even argue with evidence. Grow up. Even Smug bothered to produce some evidence.

Keep being paranoid about SJWs ruining your places. Keep being salty. I don’t care. But don’t pretend you’re any better than those losers. You have proven time and again that you’re as bad as any of them. You assume shit of people(like a SJW), ignore clear evidence when it doesn’t go your way(Like a SJW), and can’t even argue like an adult(Like a SJW).

  • You feminist will never accept reality.

  • Ckarasu

I don’t care what stupidity you want to say. Go leave with your tail between your legs like the nobody you are.

  • Feniks
  • Feniks

Don’t worry PC will come soon…

  • Feniks

    “Xbone is relevant”

Do you have a single fact to back that up?

  • machariel00

    Aye, I do:

Xbox One has been selling well recently. Overall it hasn’t sold as much as PS4 but yes, I would say it Xbone is relevant. It just has a really poor exclusive lineup, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing for consumers.

  • Fenrir007

Why even bother releasing on the dead Vita, especially now that it has been piracy-enabled? I really don’t understand.
