Persona 5’s English Script is 50% Bigger than Persona 4 Golden

Persona 5 looks like it is going to be much bigger than previous games in the series.

According to DualshockersPersona 5‘s script contains 50% more dialogue than Persona 4 Golden, Persona 4‘s Vita port. Golden also added content on top of the original Persona 4 on PS2, which means that Persona 5 will be the biggest title in the series by a pretty significant margin.

In case you missed it, you can check out the most recent P5 character trailer here, which focuses on Futaba.

Persona 5 releases for both PS3 and PS4 on April 4, 2017.

    thisi s the delay ?

  • Michael

It’s for all the added memes during localization.

  • Michael Richardson

Persona 4 Golden took me 70 or so hours to beat on the first playthrough. I guess I can clear out my gaming schedule for a few months after April.

  • Fear Me I Am Free

How is it in terms of size to the Japanese Persona 5? I mean I get words need to be added for translations to make sense sometimes, but they better not be localizing with memes and shit. This takes place in Japan and if I remember correctly, 3 & 4’s Japanese items weren’t Americanized.

  • Bitterbear

Needs to fit all those memes and that absurd obsession lolcalizers have with the Happy Days sitcom (that would also explain why there’s always characters with a New Joysey accent).

JP version : Ryuji: This… is my Persona

Yep you can be scaredl, hope they fix it, in the right way.

( First playtrought took me 90 + hours progressing normally, definetly longer than any Persona game i have played )

  • Minuteworld92

if atlus fucks up this script, I’m boycotting them.

  • Smug

despite above picture shows they cant even get a simple sentence right and need to make it ‘wacky’

  • Ubrokemygrill?

I should bite the bullet and import. This is retarded. It will be an excuse to improve my Japanese.

  • NeoTruth

Shtty translation has contaminated Persona 5 to? Good thing im taking Japanese classes, Im not going to buy the english version.

  • Himegami Aisa

Their track record isn’t exactly great, shall we say.

  • They can’t have it be serious as casuals hate that. They need to add more cringe worthy memes.

  • Syndromic

I hope the localisation doesn’t fill the script with memes. On second thought, I guess I was too late having a little bit of hope.

  • Snorlaxation

with the reviews now in for FFXV, and plenty of P5 available for those who want to know about it, I wonder which game was more fulfilling for people.

  • OSad

    >This is… my Persona…

    Why was that so hard?

  • AnarKreig

Congratulations, you ruined my day, by proxy because I wasn’t aware of these translation issues.

The game went from a must-buy to trash.
I don’t know whether to thank you or tell you to go fuck yourself.

  • UnpluggedBeta

Holy shit hahahaha why do people buy localized japanese games?

  • tccboss

They better change this shit come April.

  • Ckarasu

I mean, you can just play with JP voices and not really care.

  • Ckarasu

Why be scared? Worst comes to worst, I can just play with JP VA and ignore the localization issues. Not that this line is a huge deal. It’s dumb, yeah, but ignorable. The general meaning is still there, after all.

  • Smug

    >defending a poor translation job over a simple sentence that can be easily done without a huge level of jap knowledge
    are you legit retarded

  • Smug

    >set up jap voices
    >english subs still dont follow what the voices are saying
    gj dummy

  • Ckarasu

Did I defend the localization? Did I once call it good? No, I said you can ignore it(which implies that it’s at least “not good”). Gonna have to try harder, sir. It’s still generally accurate, but that’s not necessarily “good”.

  • Ckarasu

So? If you import, you have the same issue(No translated dialogue to follow along with). It’s really irrelevant to import when the game has the original audio. Keep trying, bucko.

  • Smug

    >changing the tone of the sentence is “accurate”
    yup definitively brain retarded

  • Smug

I can personally read japanese text, but that shouldnt excuse the poor job of translation.

  • Ckarasu

As can I, generally speaking. Kanji is a bit tougher for me, but I can follow along. Still won’t stop me from getting the NA version, and turning on the JP VA if the localization is really bad. I suffered through Enchanted Arms, and I mean suffered, up until like 25% of the way through before switching langauges. I have a high tolerance for bad.

  • Ckarasu

Tone is rather subjective in nature, and thus can be changed without changing the meaning of the sentence depending on the original text. In this case, yes it is GENERALLY accurate. There was no particular meaning other than the literal “this is my persona” to what he said. Nothing to really lose by changing the tone(as minor as the shift in tone is). Does it sound bad? Sure, and I never said it didn’t sound bad. You did try to say that I did, by saying I defended it. But you have trouble dealing with moderate opinions, so I don’t blame you too much. Sorry, champ. You gotta try harder.

One day, you will earn the username “Smug”. Until then, it is merely you pretending…

  • Himegami Aisa

Okay, well, the VA isn’t going to help when most the text is unvoiced. If anything it’s just going to annoy you when the totally epic lines don’t match up to the Nip voices.

  • Ckarasu

Doesn’t bug me too much. As bad as Atlus can be at times, it never gets Enchanted Arms levels. Or even Chaos Wars. Those were the ones that broke me. I’m generally a gameplay > story guy, and the dialogue that Atlus produces is rarely so bad, or so inaccurate, that it gets to me anyways. I could even tolerate Nozomi in SMT4A and her “homeslice”, as ridiculous as that was(it helped that she stopped talking a lot at some point).

  • Himegami Aisa

Ah yes, you’re of the battered wife school of shitty localisation apologists. I don’t care how much worse it could be or how much you can overlook, if it’s shit, it’s shit and should be condemned by anyone who doesn’t want to read a tryhard script from some shit-eating editor who thinks he’s l10n’s answer to rifftrax.

  • Ckarasu

“Apologists” is the wrong word, bucko. I don’t tell anyone to forgive the localization errors or bad dialogue. Did I tell YOU to forgive it? I just thought that, with the original VA right there, it would be easy to ignore. But if it’s not easy for you, then you do you. You should stop assuming what I mean when I clearly did not say anything close to what you are implying. Tolerate, for example, refers to withstanding rather than not acknowledging. I can see “bad”, but if it’s not that bad, then I can just move on. Perhaps you should contemplate this before typing a whole bunch of nothing next time.

I don’t see the big deal, but that does not mean others cannot. I just don’t see the benefit for importing, especially if you do not know the language(like most people in the USA).

And what constitutes “shit” is dependent on the person. I’m sure someone out there thought Enchanted Arms’ dialogue was well performed. I would question them on this, but I would not call them wrong. If you would, then fine. You’d be wrong to impose your standards on them, just as I would be wrong to tell you to like something you do not, but that would be your choice.

  • Himegami Aisa

Half your comment is you demonstrating that you don’t know what the word apologist means. Amazing.

  • Ckarasu

Seems that you do not. I did not defend anything, really. Amazing. Do you like being wrong?

  • Ckarasu

Just gonna preempt any counterarguments you might want to make: Not once did I call the localization good. THAT is defending it. I pointed out
that there is another option in the western release, and that if you
don’t think that’s enough then do whatever. An apologist’s literal
definition is defending something(in this case, the localization). I did
    nothing of the sort.

  • Smug

    >changing the tone of sentences (and thus the character’s personality) is ” generally accurate”
    >”tone is subjective”
    >it’s okay to wholly change how characters act

  • Ckarasu

That’s not a counterargument, slugger. Gonna need to dig deeper. Somewhere in there, there’s a brain. Use it.

Generally accurate works because it doesn’t need to be totally accurate. In this case, the meaning is generally the same. The tone is slightly different, but there’s no “act” taking place. He’s just slightly more pumped in one, given that the other quote is just a generic comment. It sounds bad, as I’ve said(and you ignored because you would have to admit you are talking out of your butt), but it still works. Unless you can objectively prove otherwise. Kinda hard, since anything you’d say would easily be shot down with “I don’t agree”, so hey, give it a shot.

You’ll get it one day, Tiger.
