Rumor: Pokemon Sun and Moon to Get Nintendo Switch Version

We’ve learned of a hot new rumor for the Nintendo Switch and Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon.

The new rumor comes from Eurogamer, who cites “multiple sources” close to the new versions set to launch for the console sometime next year. The new version of the game is reportedly code-named Pokemon Stars.

The sources also claim the game is being developed by Game Freak, the same team known for the mainline Pokemon games, including Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon.

Eurogamer pointed to the February reveal teaser for both games, noting the brief look at an HD in-game model of the new bird Pokemon Pikipek, which is supposedly only for the Switch edition.

Game Freak has been reportedly working on this Switch version alongside the Nintendo 3DS originals, however development on the Switch version was put on hold a few months ago to finish up the 3DS versions. Now, the team is supposedly continuing working on content that will be exclusive to the Switch version.

It’s worth mentioning the Switch version will reportedly have the same cities, map, routes, and art style – however everything will be rendered with high-resolution assets.

Finally, the report notes the Switch version was originally set for a summer 2017 release but that has since been pushed back into sometime later next year.

When contacted by Eurogamer for a comment, both Nintendo and The Pokemon Company would not respond to the rumor. We’ve also reached out to Nintendo for a comment and will update the article should we get clarification.

  • Luis Diaz

Makes sense, since it’s probably gonna sell the system like hot cakes.

  • Mr0303

Nintendo being a generation behind as usual – this is them getting the remasters/re-releases out of their system.

  • Donwel

Nintendo has been remastering/re-releasing shit for decades man. Look at Mario all stars, Ocarina of Time 3D and Wind Waker, not to mention the virtual console.

  • Didney Worl

So, we have a new Mario, a new Zelda, a new Mario Kart, the possibility of Splatoon as a pack-in title, and a mainline Pokemon game all coming to the Switch within its first year?

Could it be? Am I actually getting hyped for a Nintendo console? I haven’t felt this way since the Wii launched 10 years ago.

  • Mr0303

Fair point. It just seems to be prevalent with the NS. If the rumours are to be believed they’ll have Splatoon, Smash Bros and now even 3DS games.

  • Touma

yea, not getting the 3DS version, gonna wait for Switch’s port

  • totenglocke

Except it makes sense for popular Wii U titles to get “complete” editions with all DLC included on the Switch. The Wii U sold extremely poorly and they need as many great games as possible right off the bat to make sure the Switch sells.

  • Guin

Watch how the new content would be another region.

  • Mr0303

This is no different than the other two companies doing remasters of the top selling games to push sales. Halo, Gears, God of War, Uncharted, The Last of Us and even the Rare collection.

  • 人工頭脳虫螻

You might wanna tone down on the usage of “version”. Three times in a single sentence? Jesus

  • MusouTensei

Ugh, now I kinda want to skip on the 3DS version in case this is true, fucking rumors man.

  • Wonderkarp

I know I have a bit of a chubby over this news.

  • SuuLoliBoob

  • Donwel

I imagine it’s going to be an insurance so the Switch doesn’t get the lengthy software droughts that the Wii U had, so yeah, we’ll probably see quite a bit of it.
Not exactly great for consumers, but it makes it seem as though there’s a steady stream of games coming to the system for the shareholders/execs benefit.

  • Travis Touchdown

By ‘multiple sources’ he means Emily Rogers and Laura Kate Dale.

  • Smug

Unless it gets a good catalog of third-party games that could rival the PSP/DS (which is pretty much an impossibility at this point with how things are now), it wont be worth it.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

” sources also claim the game is being developed by Game Freak”
Confirmed shit though for this situation; wouldn’t be surprising.

“team is supposedly continuing working on content that will be exclusive to the Switch version”
That’s dragon for just a couple of outfits and all the mon.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

    “and now even 3DS games”
    Nintendo wants the PS4 audience.

  • Fear Me I Am Free

I’ve always said that Nintendo needed a Pokemon RPG that had you going to every region on console. Still will never happen, but it would be neat.

  • totenglocke

I guess you haven’t seen the 3DS catalog. There’s every reason to expect every company who develops for the 3DS to develop for Switch.

  • totenglocke

It’ll be an MMO with monthly fees. Honestly, I’m surprised Nintendo hasn’t done it yet since they’d make a fuck fortune off of it.

  • totenglocke

Well it’s not like you can’t just buy the 3DS version in a few months if it doesn’t come out on Switch.

  • totenglocke

For games like Smash Bros, it’ll be cheaper to buy the “definitive” version on Switch than buying all of the DLC on Wii U / 3DS, plus you’ll get better graphics.

  • totenglocke

Except the majority of those games were pretty blurry in their original version and it benefitted people to buy the remastered version, especially people who never played them before. If you don’t want to replay it or pay for enhanced graphics, then don’t buy it. It’s silly to bitch about more options and the potential for even more people to experience the great game.

  • Mr0303

Who’s bitching? I’m just pointing out that Nintendo is picking up the remastered games trend like Sony and MS have done this generation.

  • totenglocke

My bad, most people who talk about lots of remastered games are whining about their existence.

  • Smug

I do own a (jap) n3DS as a fact, and I still found its game catalog to be pretty weak compared to the previous gen of handhelds.

  • Smug

    >defending remasters
They look worse than their original versions most of the time, and are often bloated with an extra pack of GBs because devs cant into lossless compression anymore

Also people bitch about remasters when it’s pretty much like half of the titles on the PS4

  • Gin Tosh

    >there’s every reason

er…install base? That’s a pretty huge reason to develop or not develop for a console.

If anything what you just said means they will continue to focus on the 3ds which has had huge sales, rather than a console nobody knows how it’s going to do.

  • Zombie_Barioth

I think the main problem is that the games don’t lend themselves to that style of game.

I’m sure most fans remember how unbalanced G/S/C were with just two regions, all regions definitely wouldn’t work, especially as they create more.

There’s also the huge maintenance effort and cost that could go towards regular installments instead.

Most spin-offs are kinda niche as well, most Pokemon fans only buy the main RPG series, so they may not touch an MMO either. Especially if a $15/m fee is involved, that’s almost half of a 3DS game.

  • benzene

Looks like the Pikipek model that showed up in the first few trailers.

  • Dewey Defeats Truman

I don’t generally trust leaks or rumors but I’d be more surprised if there wasn’t a version of Sun/Moon on the Switch considering it’s whole gimmick is closing the gap between handheld and home consoles.

  • Travis Touchdown

    Name one good PSP game.

  • Smug

Outrun 2006, Gachitora!, Ridge Racers 2, Taiko no Tatsujin, Ace Combat Join Assault, Gitaroo Man Lives, Boku no Natsuyasumi, Corpse Party Repeated Fear, Dead Head Fred, IQ Mania, Dungeon Travelers 2, pretty much all Falcom titles (Gurumin, Eiyuu Densetsu, Ys, Natsuya), Fate/Extra, Ryu ga Gotoku Kurohyou, Growlanser, Kenka Bacho, Metal Slug Anthology, Sangokushi, etc.

Your parents didnt love you enough to offer you a PSP
Or get yourself a fucking job instead of leeching on them

  • Michael Richardson

    Corpse Party.

  • Michael Richardson

Does an upgraded Mario Kart 8 port really count as a new Mario Kart?

Also, don’t forget the rumor of a SSB port with all the DLC.

But yes, if these rumors are true, the Switch is going to have one hell of a launch year.

Knowing Nintendo, though, they’ll find a way to screw something up.

Prove me wrong, Nintendo. Please. I want you to succeed.

  • MusouTensei

Sure but normally I buy PKMN games day 1 or at least close to release.

  • Snorlaxation

I’d love to visit more than one region. The only issue is how to keep the player from becoming so overleveled, or, simply allowing them to become over leveled, and altering the gyms and trainers in different areas depending on your roster of pokemon.

  • Snorlaxation

    Pokemon: (Smells armpits) Superstar version.

  • True Goddess Reincarnation

    No Miku? The fuck

  • Digimon World: Redigitize

  • Zombie_Barioth

Yep, that’s the biggest issue, aside from making both worth exploring and all of course.

Two regions could work, they just can’t be afraid of having level 70+ Pokemon in the later half of the 2nd region.

  • I don’t place faith in rumours myself but didn’t Emily get something big right recently?

It doesn’t mean that she is destined for accuracy but is at least better than Michael Pachter.

  • If they fix the battle mode, switch up the item system and maybe add Mission Mode. It’ll be good enough.

I didn’t pick up Mario Kart 8 and think most people will return if Mario Kart Switch is confirmed to have a better lifespan and new cups.

If Smash Bros unconditionally has all of the DLC from the Wii U and/or 3DS versions (I want the Smash Run mode on console). I’ll be very pleased.

I wonder if they can meet the hype on all of this though especially the region free thing since every portable from the DSi to the New 3DS XL has been region locked.

  • What exactly are you looking for on the Japanese 3DS? I’ve had one for 5 years almost and wouldn’t mind dropping recommendations.

Whenever I’m bitter about disappointing 3DS games, I tend to return to my DS backlog but I imagine I’ll do the same even if the Switch delivers (without backwards compatibility but yeah).

  • Travis Touchdown

  • Michael Richardson

If they fix battle mode, remove coin items, and add new tracks in addition to the DLC stuff, I’ll definitely repurchase it. I’d love to see Nintendo fix the stupid mistakes that are dragging that gloriously fun racer down.

And yeah, if Smash 4 on Switch is a thing, they should combine the stages in the handheld and console versions and ditch the board game thing for Smash Run.

According to Emily Rogers, the console is region free. I really, really, really hope she’s right about that.

  • Pillbugable

To be fair, a lot of games make higher-quality models to start with and then reduce the polygon count until it’s good for the system to run well, so they might not even have “HD Assets”.

  • Travis Touchdown

That’s exactly what they do in Pokemon. Games like Battle Revolution for the Wii were still using a ton of character models from the Stadium days.

This is actually the main reason I don’t believe this rumor.

  • Travis Touchdown

    “Upgraded Mario Kart 8 port!”

    Why are people this retarded?

You can clearly see it’s a completely different game.

  • Travis Touchdown

    I said good games.

  • Smug

He listed them, you just have shit taste

  • Michael Richardson

No, you can’t. It looks like an upgraded version of MK8.

Nintendo isn’t going to launch the Switch with MK9. It’s going to port to Switch all of the successful Wii U games that couldn’t be ported to 3DS to pad out the launch year library. It’s actually a really smart move.

  • Travis Touchdown

    Yes they are.

You can tell it’s a new game due to new mechanics present in the trailer. The fact that it uses assets and tracks in MK8 is irrelevant.

  • Michael Richardson

Care to enlighten the class about these “mechanics?”

  • Didney Worl
  • Uncle Slick

I can’t wait for the Switch.

  • Bashtarle

If true this might actually be my first Pokemon Game.

  • Out of all those you listed, only Mario is likely to be a new game. All the others will be ports. If you’re excited, great, but I don’t understand why.

  • All I saw was that you can bank an item and there is a new character. Whoopity-doo…

  • Yet another port coming to Switch that Nintendo fans are falling all over themselves for. Why? Why are Nintendo fans so happy to give money to Nintendo for the same games over and over again? At least it’s a “console” Pokemon game, I guess.

  • I don’t believe that the Switch will be as successful as the 3DS. It’s not nearly as portable, and portable gaming is still slowly edging toward iOS/mobile.

I think the Switch will do better than the Wii U, but not as well as 3DS. I may be wrong.

  • Props for OutRun!

  • Just wait. You’ll feel better about it knowing you made an informed decision.

  • Michael Richardson

Right. Nothing to suggest that this is a new game. Just a refined port with additional content.

  • Verus

it’s amusing how wrong you were.
