Niche Spotlight – Breakneck Mecha Action in Break Arts II

Indie Japanese developer Mercurystudio is working on a new, brilliant-looking mecha-action game dubbed simply Break Arts II.

While the original game was a free-to-play mobile release (which had an English release via Playism), its sequel is set for a PC release (via Steam), some time next summer or fall.

Players will be able to customize their machine and play against others around the world. The focus, much like its predecessor, is to customize your robot, race, and battle each other en route to the finish line.

The developer made the decision to develop the game on PC as well to further push its visuals and performance.

Each mech that you pilot and customize will have a physical weight difference, which directly affects the maneuverability of the machine. You’ll also be able to turn around while racing and battling, so you can attack your foes in both directions.

Here’s a trailer from the original game, so you can get an idea of what to expect from its sequel:

For now, you can follow the game’s progress over on its official development blog. You can also grab the original game for free here on iOS and here on Android (it has microtransactions).

    Sounds cool.

  • Heresy Hammer

    Looks rad as fuck.

  • oshigoroshi

yeah, 60fps on pc is gonna be GLORIOUS!

  • OSad

Cool idea, too bad it has to be a racing game. I’d be more interested in an actual Armored Core-esque game on PC.

Customization could be really cool depending on how close to APB it gets though.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

It was weird having it happen one time outside of Transformers but this is just outright bizarre.

Rad, I’m glad they’re developing it for a decent platform this time

  • catazxy

Can’t wait for the next armored core

  • Vernify

Was honestly expecting this to possibly play like Z.O.E or AC, but more mecha games are good regardless. This does look pretty sick though, so I’m going to keep an eye out for it and probably give it a buy once it’s out.

I love robutts so I’ll keep my eye on this

You’re welcome. Just remember, you’ll be playing a game funded by mobile.

  • TheBlackRabbit

this looks great. i want it.

  • Godmars

Not if they’re not really mech games. Games where “mech” has no real value or weight, rather, it’s just a generic skin.

The idea IS a racing game. So aren’t you essentially saying cool idea, except for the idea? Also APB as in APB reloaded? What does that have to do with anything?

Unfortunately mech games aren’t all too popular these days, especially on PC. There’s some Early Access stuff that could go either way at some point, but isn’t too promising yet.

Except Project Nimbus. That looks pretty decent and I think it’ll get finished, but it doesn’t have the customization AC fans want. Have you seen Brigador? Top down, but very cool. Plenty of customization and definitely has the mech feel.

I’m always up for some mech action but the racing aspect puts me off

I meant to say that the idea is cool, but I don’t necessarily appreciate it because I think racing with giant robots instead of cars is a little silly. If you look at the trailer and think about it, it doesn’t look like anything besides Mario Kart trying to tap into a mecha audience.

I don’t know why I spouted APB in retrospect, because there’s just no way a game like this would come close to what APB Reloaded did in terms of customization, but I guess that’s what I was expecting, which isn’t the case.

It’s a real shame that there’s not a proper mecha action game like Armored Core in the works. I still think that if you made one that’s a quarter of what Armored Core is, but has an actual story besides “You’re a freelancer! Do work for corporations!”, with characters and a more personal plot, you could make a lot of money off of that.

Hell, you can draw a few parallels from Ace Combat, since it’s also mission-based and you’re essentially just piloting a fighter instead of being on a mecha. Ace Combat 5 and Ace Combat Zero are probably two of the best Ace Combats there are, but they don’t necessarily do anything wildly different from the rest of the series, but the story, setting and characters are really well done, they help bring the universe to life, and you don’t even get to see the faces of any of the characters for the most part. A little bit goes a long way if it’s well done.

I think Mecha racing could be done well, but you really have to nail the physics and movement. The first Break Arts game definitely didn’t. It looks floaty. Hopefully they do better with this sequel, but I still don’t see it being perfect.
