Egglia: Legend of the Red Hat is Highly Reminiscent of the Mana Series

Since their founding in 2013, Japanese developer Brownies has finally announced their debut game: a collaborative title named Egglia: Legend of the Red Cap, which they’re making with DMM’s Powerchord Studio.

The smartphone RPG will be led by founder and former 1-Up (formerly known as Brownie Brown) president Shinichi Kameoka, as well as his co-founder Kouji Tsuda (another 1-Up alumnus).

During their time at Brownie Brown, both men worked on various games within the Seiken Densetsu series, as well as Mother 3, and Fantasy Life. Their new game, Egglia, is quite reminiscent of the Mana series:

The game world centers around a mechanic in which entire worlds are sealed within eggs, which you can unlock and place onto the world map, a la Legend of Mana.

As you unlock and place eggs on the world map, you’ll get more areas to explore:

These new areas will have play fields that you can explore freely. The fields are broken up into hexagons, with movement limited to what numbers you get via a dice roll. There’s a variety of actions you can make, including combat, gathering items, and even cutting down trees.

As you obtain various items from the field, you can use them to build homes, as well as furniture in the “My Town” component. As you develop up your town, more people will immigrate and live there, and some will even open up shops.

You’ll also be able to unlock various quests, experience points, and even money – when certain pre-requisites are met in your town.

You’ll encounter battles upon running into monsters on adjacent hexagon spaces. Battles involve dice rolls as well.

The mobile RPG involves the unfortunate Chabo (above left), a boy with broken horns that fell through the sky. Originating from the savage Red Cap tribe, he lost his memories after his fall. Robin (above right) is an elf girl seeking the revival of Egglia, as well as figuring out why Chabo fell.

Egglia: Legend of the Red Hat is currently in development for both iOS and Android devices.
