Niche Gamer Plays – No Man’s Sky

Niche Gamer Plays is an ongoing video preview series where our staff take an in-depth and yet concise look at classic, current, and upcoming games across all current gaming platforms.

This week, we had our own Tyler Valle give a thorough (over a half hour) hands-on video of Hello Games’ newly released sci-fi exploration game, No Man’s Sky.

Due to the current nature of the game, this is the best approach we could find to reviewing it in its current state.

If you have any suggestions for a future Niche Gamer Plays video, please shoot us an email to Niche Gamer Plays @ Niche Gamer (click to open a new message with your preferred email provider), as we’re always looking to cover more gaming content!

The staff at Niche Gamer are crazy passionate about the same games that we cover and play every day. Please feel free to contact us any time!

  • Minuteworld92

Spark the electric jester second demo? Can you do an impressions on that?

  • Tyrannikos

The whole multiplayer debacle is a total shit show.

That being said, I’ve still been interested in this game just to bop around from planet to planet. That’s all I ever wanted it for and it seems to deliver on that just fine.

  • RioSine

“This is a game that might not be for everyone”

…Without Multiplayer, any significant form of terraformation or base building, then that pretty much narrows the margin to people who like running around collecting trash.

Also No binary or trinary system and neutron or positron stars? at the end of the video I just saw only G type yellow dwarfs that didn’t even bothered to alter the trajectory of the ship. that sucks

But at least there are cute randomly generated animals. I mean how could you say No to this face?

  • Dammage

Ah, I see the HR Geiger influences

  • Some furf

All the fun of wandering around ugly, empty worlds, slowly shooting rocks with a laser that overheats constantly even at subzero temperatures. What a piece of shit.

  • Madbrainbox

    What a dickhead!

  • Smug

    No man’s game

  • scemar

  • 2501

Looks like it belongs in SMT/Persona.

  • 2501

So… is this game boring then?

  • Melsatix

    As I said on Techraptor:

For an explorer and space fanatic as I am, this game is just amazing.
Only to jump from planet to planet and find all the different space
ships (I still wish and hope to fly one of the huge carrier and
crusaders one day) makes so much fun and even finding all necessary
resources is so damn easy. Next to this, it is a thrill to learn the
languages of all those alien races (found 3 races so far) so that you
finally understand what they want from you.

    The only thing that
bothered me a bit, were those mathematic riddles… I hate math, but
now, I figured them out more or less. A nice addition combined with
    sweet rewards for cracking them.

For people, who ever dreamed to
fly through space and visit new planets, this is a dream come true. I
know this because it is my dream and I’m so damn happy about it. If only
I could fly one of those big crusaders or carrier ships and store my
smaller ship in it like you can do in Subnautica, my life would be

About the Multiplayer aspect, sure, it is sad, but not a reason why I wouldn’t play this game, after all, I’m not a big fan of multiplayer games. Like I said, this is the Minecraft light game I was hoping to see one day, now all we need is to be able to fly one of those big ships and store your little ship inside of it as like mods for the PC version =)

  • Alex Drake

    Lol mods for this. Hahaha

  • Alex Drake

Needs more than mods to save it

  • Like a serious price drop.

  • giygas

    It really is Spore 2.0!

  • Meroune Lorelei Du Neptune

Stream it next time pls. I like to stream and like only 5 to 10 ppl watch but shit is fun. I promise not to shitpost too much.

  • Meroune Lorelei Du Neptune

    Mara would be proud.

  • Jack

There are more Kanji in the Japanese language than planets in No Man’s Sky

  • AT-LOW

Stop, please, I can’t handle these sweet bantz

  • scemar

how about online multiplayer mod tho

  • scemar

  • alterku

Minecraft without building or terrain alteration and added quickly depleting resources, but in space. I already don’t really want to play minecraft, why would I do it in space with fewer and more annoying options?

  • Random Dude

We just need an achievement for meeting such creatures and we’re set.

  • ProxyDoug

Seems like a game I would have fun with, however, I’m not a fan of the LODs models popping up when you are hovering above the surface. Also I will never understand this color scheme.
My question is, does the animals act in a certain way depending on the parts they have? Not being like this would go against the rules of character design. For instance, having an animal with horns or a sturdy forehead would indicate to the player that he can be aggressive, four legs means he is fast, being big indicates he is resistant and so on and so forth.
It would be a shame to see it just being a downgraded version of the Spore creature creator.

  • Marine
  • Travis Touchdown

  • Derek

No one should play this piece of shit game.

User Reviews are hitting the low 30’s. A special place normally reserved for Neptunia games from feminazi reviewers

  • 2501

Turns out the PC port is garbage… like “Arkham Knight” garbage.

  • Melsatix

    Not sure what you mean?

  • Raziel Barkrai

Kaneko is in his office going, “Shit! Someone’s trying to steal my thunder!”

  • Melsatix

Why are you making a comment about a game that you don’t like in the first place? That makes no sense at all.

  • CoarseHock

The odds of mod support being added is slim to none, especially with how botched the PC release has been.

  • Melsatix

I doubt that. The game may run horribly now, but this can change and to say that mod support is slim… there is always a way as long as people like to modify games and PC games are the most easiers thing to modify.

But right know, it is true, that Hello Games need to fix the game and hopefully, this port will run as good (if not better) than the PS4 version, which is not perfect, but playable.

  • Alex Drake

Your blind baseless faith is endearing

  • Melsatix

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.

  • olorwoeld

Can I ask you again why you are writing reviews on games that you have not played? Also, what benefits do you think that you or anyone else gets out of reviews of games that you have not played? Do you struggle to write reviews of games that you have not played, or do the words roll off your fingers? You’ve named four, but what are the other reviews you have made of games that you have not played?

    I’m genuinely curious.

  • Smug

He’s a legit nintendo autist known from imageboards, with his own little safe space, so I dont think you will have a proper answer out of him

  • olorwoeld

You see, here’s the thing. My line of questioning originates from a post he wrote on a Nintendo cultist site. In that post he was criticizing positive user reviews for No man’s Sky on Metacritic. In a response to someone else, completely lacking irony, he inadvertently confessed to writing reviews on Metacritic for games that he has never played: Overwatch, Undertale, Uncharted 4 and No Man’s Sky.

I considered this absolutely amazing, both in terms of the lack of self awareness and its pathetic hilarity. I asked him the above questions, but he has never got around to answering them. I was banned from the site that he originally posted the comment on because honesty and logic are big no nos, so I’m following him around a bit until he answers what I think are perfectly reasonable questions. I know he won’t answer, trust me a lot of us know about Travis. I think we have more experience of Travis than you lot do. You should look up his work on a site called Playeressence, I think it might put whatever he has done on this site to shame, but judging by your response, it seems that his reputation precedes him.

  • Smug

Cody doesnt really reply to comments once he found himself surrounded into a corner.

For Video Game (((Facts))) regulars who claim they rustle people’s jimmies, they sure ban, block and flee away back to their bubble once they met a single resistance.

  • Alistair

That so not like you ‘No one should played this piece of shit game”

You do have issues with these echhi games that you brought up “from femminazi”

No man sky is indeed piece of crap, the issue is what sean said they be mutiplayer. Turns out he Lied.

So you get a 1 upvote from me.

  • Alistair

The PC Version is brtoken that not what hello games wanted.

This whole mess could be avoided if sean keep his big gob shut.

The ironic thing is this farce dragging sony down with them.

  • Alistair

On a different note how many patches for No man’s shite to be fixed for it to make the game full and not half baked.

  • Derek

I only have an issue with localization priorities, not the gameplay itself.

  • Madbrainbox

I’ll try this again in an year when it will have a little more meat on it’s bones.Until then I’ll probably try again one of the X games and maybe this time I will be able to get a giant ship.

  • Rogar the Greater

So people should only say something if they like it? That’s not how discourse works.

  • Derek

And censor truthbombs. I mentioned how anal Japanese copyright is that it hurts the fans and unsurprisingly that comment was placed under moderation aka censorship.

  • Madbrainbox

Having a giant Universe to explore with a tiny inventory is just dumb.
“Hey you are free to go wherever you want.Except you’re not allowed to fucking touch anything!”

  • Melsatix

His comment is pointless, because he hates this type game in the first place. Only a troll would make a comment like this.

  • Smug

“If he doesnt pander to my opinion, he must be a troll!!!!”

    Nichegamer isnt a safe space

  • Melsatix

A comment and a question are two different things.

  • olorwoeld

That’s usually how things work with people. Either way, I just want to know the mentality of people who write detailed reviews of something that they have no experience of.

  • Rogar the Greater

    Awwwww, he bitched out.

  • Captain Vidya

When the first trailer came out, it looked interesting. I was hoping to travel the stars with some friends and explore or whatever. But then it turned out to be a single-player only game with the goal of “just explore this procedurely generated planet with no real endgame” and I just lost interest. I’m fine with endgame-less sandbox games if I can play with some friends, but if I can only do that by myself, I’d rather play something else.

I can see why some people might like it, I guess, but this game isn’t for me.
