Online Sandbox Survival Game Rust Adds Female Character Models

Facepunch Studios recently put out an update for their online sandbox survival game, Rust, which adds female character models.

A bit of exposition is needed here for people who haven’t played or been following the game: since its December 2013 Early Access release (Editor’s Note: The game is still in Early Access), Rust has only allowed you to play as a male avatar, however your race, physique, even genitalia size is completely randomized.

Now, you’ll be assigned a gender that is decided by your SteamID – this means you’ll randomly be assigned a gender as well, which is also tied to your SteamID. Rust developers Gary Newman and Taylor Reynolds posted the news over on the Rust Devblog:

We understand this is a sore subject for a lot of people. We understand that you may now be a gender that you don’t identify with in real-life. We understand this causes you distress and makes you not want to play the game anymore. Technically nothing has changed, since half the population was already living with those feelings. The only difference is that whether you feel like this is now decided by your SteamID instead of your real life gender.

Further revisions of the player model were teased. “This is really just the first pass of an ongoing rework of the player model,” said the developers. “I’ll continue to add variations over the comings weeks which means you’re probably not stuck with your new face forever.”

There’s a myriad of other changes, upgrades, and fixes now in the game as well – like ceiling lights, medical items, improvements to grenades, and more.

You can find Rust here on Steam for PC, Mac, and Linux.
