Eastward, a Gorgeous, Pixelated Shanghainese Game Inspired by Anime

Pixpil Games, a small indie studio based in Shanghai, is currently working on an action-adventure game by the name of Eastward.

What makes the game noteworthy, as if the accompanying images and video haven’t clued you in yet, is the amazing depth of the title’s pixel art.

Gameplay-wise, Eastward will be an action-based adventure game similar in style to the early Legend of Zelda games, only occurring within a post-apocalyptic/sci-fi setting.

Eastward’s world is dying from environmental hazards inflicted upon it through war, and with human society failing as the population dwindles, you set out into the world to seek aid.

Travelling through the post-apocalyptic landscape with you is your daughter, making the plot seem very “Last of Us“, something the developer jokingly admits on their IndieDB page.

Though it’s extremely early in its development, the striking pixel art visuals of Eastward have earned it a fair bit of attention. You can follow the game on its Steam page, or through Pixpil’s Twitter.
