Fire Emblem Fates Fan Translation Project Has Ceased Development [UPDATE]

fire emblem fates 03-06-16-14

[UPDATE]

The editor of the fan translation has clarified that they have passed along all the work they had completed to another translation group for them to continue.

[ORIGINAL STORY]

Fans that were waiting for Team If’s fan translation of Fire Emblem: Fates to be released are in for some bad news, as the team had recently announced that they will be ceasing all future development on the project.

The reason stated was simply that the team was burnt out and did not care to continue it. Any work that they have completed will be retained by the group.

The project originally started before the game was brought over in the west as a means for fans to play an English version of the game before it’s official release, but still continued after it launched with renewed interest in the project after the poor reception of the Fire Emblem: Fates localization.

The project is now left in the air, with the hope that another individual or group continue the project where the original team left off.

    Nnnnnnnnnnnnnnooooooooooooooooooo

  • Audie Bakerson

    Why aren’t you learning Nipponese?

  • It isn’t so much the localization but the story of Fates itself isn’t even that good. This result honestly doesn’t surprise me that much.

It’s like Ninty was surprised at how well Awakening went for them that they forgot how to make a FE game story worth a damn.

  • 日塔 奈美

As someone who once TL’d for a Scanlation group I can understand the “burned out” excuse, but it seems kinda scummy that they wouldn’t at least hand over what they did TL to a more willing group/individual.

  • chaoguy

In the UK you get something called an injunction. You can’t say X, but you can say you’ve been injunctioned for something.
You also have super-injunctions, where you can’t even acknowledge you’ve been gagged.

I suspect that Nintendo of America has performed a Cease and Desist, and has threatened the translation group with legal action if they acknowledge it.

Here’s where to complain about the “quality” of Fire Emblem:

  • summoner ranger

i have feeling treehouse or Nintendo put a cease and desist order

  • Smug

    NoA meme’d their shit up

  • TsukuyomiMagi99

I don’t what disappoints me more the fact that they quit and didn’t just hand it off to someone else. The fact that this gives Nintendo even more of a reason not to change their ways, or the fact that I’ll never play this game. If Nintendo had given the fans an accurate translation this wouldn’t have been a problem. Oh well…one more game off my list. Fuck you Nintendo.

  • Makoto

At least the opposite approach is still live (content restoration): http://serenesforest.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=60728

It should bring approximatively the same result as patching the Japanese version minus the missing fan translation parts.

  • Doge

    GOOD
    MUCH FUCK THIS GAME
    LIKE WOW

  • Audie Bakerson

I don’t think that kind of thing is possible in the US, at least for private companies regarding non-employees.

  • – ̗̀GFI ̖́- Korra

Wow some real censorship going on here, it’s all thanks to the sjw feminazi illuminati i tell ya!

  • Heavily Augmented

I’d like to say that the team just gave up, but considering Nintendo’s track record with C&D, I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if they had anything to do with the project cancellation.

  • BanBrado

Well i guess i just won’t play this game then.

Though from what i’ve heard i really won’t be missing out anyways.

  • Jonathan Litwinka

They probably got too much attention with the controversy surrounding the game too. They went from a small group doing a fan translation, to front and center in the battle.

  • Touma Kazusa

Better download the patch files just in case it gets taken down

  • Dewey Defeats Truman

I can’t blame them for wanting to drop it or anything but reading that thread, the one making the announcement comes across like an arrogant, overly-confrontational asshole regarding the whole situation.

  • Alexis Nascimento-Lajoie

    What?

  • Heavily Augmented

“Deal with it. We don’t feel the need to justify ourselves. If you want to accuse us for dropping a project that we joined to work on in our own free time, then you should reconsider.”

How much more of an asshole can you sound like?

  • benzene

“You should be thankful we wasted our time and yours for free”

    -Those guys

  • 日塔 奈美

Yep. That’s something I noticed too. Makes it hard to believe they got C&D’d, because if they did, why would you then go on to make yourself look like an ass?

I think the more likely situation is they got lazy, have nothing new to show, and are lashing out now. “Burned out” lol. Scummy way to behave.

  • Figuratively Shaking

It is often given as snarky advice by people desperate to defend people
who are bad at their jobs, but “Learn Japanese if you like playing Japanese games” is ultimately not wrong.

Fan translations have never been reliable. Shit like this is a dime a dozen.

  • Cerzel

“Also, we will be sending our files to someone who wishes to continue the project. You can get it there later.”

  • Heavily Augmented

Ok, I take it back in the fact that the team got a C&D from Nintendo. Seriously, they sound like a bunch of disrespectful asshats on their forum.

  • 日塔 奈美

After reading their forums, the leader of their “group” just comes off like an asshole. Interesting that he’d contradict himself like that though.

    >His first post is all: “We’re keeping our work”
    >After some blowback: “We’re handing it off to mystery group X you can grab it at X time”

Doesn’t even say who/when/where. The way he’s acting, doesn’t sound at all reliable or trustworthy so… ╮(─▽─)╭

  • Cerzel

Yeah, I’ve been waiting all this time for a finished and fixed up patch to play the games, so I guess I won’t be doing that for even longer yet, if at all. No way I’m touching NoA’s shitty rewrite.

  • Shiggy Diggy Doo

    Because I don’t know how
Hell if you can give some pointers that would be baller. My mom actually attempted to teach me Japanese before English but changed her mind when she wanted me to learn something useful first. I figured it’d be nice to continue her work.

  • epy

Disappointing, but this happens a lot in fantranslations. Can only hope someone else continues their work.

  • Jack
  • luggage lad

what a masive ponce. I fully respect someone coming forward and saying “I’m burnt out and don’t wanna work on this anymore” but why the weird passive-aggressive anger?

these obscure nintendo-hacking communities have such weird behavioral issues it seems.

  • DizzyGear

My thought exactly. That luyairis dude sounds like a massive tit and makes me think the project stranded to due drama instead.
Hope he’ll keep his word and let someone else finish the work.

  • Kraken

bummer. was hoping this would turn out. would have been the only way i would have played this game

  • Truck

Damn who’ve knew weebs lack a sense of commitment.

They’re also a bunch of whinny faggots besides being “burned out”.

    Then there's this:

    http://www.reddit.com/r/fireemblem/comments/49czzc/nichegamer_released_their_review_of_this_game/d0qvaj2?context=3

Basically, I believe I am part of the reason these fuckers are stopping, because they're a bunch of sandy vaginas. It's not the first time they've shit on their fans.

  • Jack

Why are fan-translators always such autists

  • Kraken

    moonrunes are hard

  • Immahnoob

No, there was no C&D. This would have happened ages ago since Nintendo knew about them.

  • Fear Me I Am Free

Incredibly disappointing. Weren’t they close to being finished?

  • Immahnoob

Supports are at 10%, the rest of the game is finished. You can still get the patch anyway.

  • Jumanji Joe

I get this feeling that Nintendo lawyers stepped in.

  • Michael Krause

They supposedly got a manga author to do the writing for this game. I haven’t heard of any of his works though, so I can’t compare quality or have any expectations. This really sucks that there’s less of a chance for me to enjoy this game. But I don’t doubt that there’s someone who wants to keep this going.

  • Immahnoob

No idea, but I now see a pattern with editors in localizations/fan translations being complete utter dickheads.

For translators, I have no opinion yet.

  • EinMugenTenshin

    I kinda get it though.

I mean, everyone is saying the localization is horrible, yet everybody is also saying they don’t play that game because of the story and hilarious voice acting. For a fan translation to emphasis on a game where the translation really isn’t that important must be a hit to the motivation health bar.

  • DizzyGear

They cant handle the fame/attention i guess.
Same with that VC3 fan patch. Got allot of attention, took forever and in the end it they tossed out a pretty half assed patch and called it a day.

And yeah i know noone owes these people shit but if they lose intrest in the project, they should just be honest about it and dont act like a massive asshole.
But being an obnoxous primma donna seems to be a common fan translator trait.

  • MLG Barroth

im getting my tinfoil hat. for this.
i have little doubt that ninetdno lawyers setepped in

  • scemar

Well this really sucks for any real fan of the game that was patiently waiting for it to come out.

But no big deal, someone else will probably find a way.
Either a different translation team finishes it or the restoration patch for the english version fixes it.

  • scemar

    Good job.

  • DizzyGear

Wont this leave you with the god awful treehouse translation rewrite?

  • Cerzel

This. It’s a terrible option. Nobody should want to go through the game with their abomination of an English script, even with the cut content restored.

  • Immahnoob

I told myself that too. They’re undeserving of any sympathy.

  • Level99Studios

Actually the restoration patch is the one thats being continued and the english patch for IF is actually going to continue to be made by another group as the admin of Team IF stated in the thread.

  • Revlofantasy

Wow, they really sound like assholes.

  • Linkmstr

*sigh* We’ve had our own reasons of stopping. This was way before the whole debate with the localization even happened and it’s defnitely wasn’t partly because of you, at all.

To be very honest, we didn’t do much over the past few months. After we finished translating the third path, things got a lot slower and many of us started getting busy with real life. It just wasn’t in our interest to continue much at that point. We were already thinking about stopping.

Then, when the game came out in the US, the whole debate with localization vs. fan-translation was getting very out of hand, so that also contributed to us stopping. People arguing and complaining about the localization and putting the fan-translation on a pedestal. Okay, so the localization has errors and problems, and what? We have a lot more grammar errors and typos than the localization, not even half of the support conversations translated, plenty of bugs, and many other miscellaneous stuff untranslated.

We didn’t want all this drama to happen at all. We just wanted to create a patch for those that imported the game and have it be playable to them if they can’t read what the menus and items say. Everything else, like the story and stuff, was just extra and something we wanted to do for fun.

Plus, “whinny faggots”? I really don’t want to hear that from you when you keep whining and being freaking entitled that you should have gotten the game the way it should have been. I’m surprised you even linked that Reddit post. Because you had a lot more sand in your worn out vagina about the localization. https://www.reddit.com/r/fireemblem/comments/49czzc/nichegamer_released_their_review_of_this_game/d0qvaj2?context=3#d0qsj76

Either way, what’s done is done.

  • ThatOneGuy

Holy shit that reddit chain is disgusting

  • Smug

    No they arent
It’s actually more the way textbooks and most sources are trying to teach you (especially the kanji part as if the authors really hated your guts) that is fucked and hard

  • Richard Miller

    What a pity.

  • Immahnoob

“*sigh* We’ve had our own reasons of stopping. This was way before the whole debate with the localization even happened and it’s defnitely wasn’t because of you, at all.”

Oh well, I did say “I think I’m part of the reason”. That’s somewhat good then.

“To be very honest, we didn’t do much over the past few months. After we finished translating the third path, things got a lot slower and many of us started getting busy with real life. It just wasn’t in our interest to continue much at that point. We were already thinking about stopping.”

it could have just been better to tell people about it and not the way you guys did it.

Like “We’ll not give you guys what we finished.” is not the best way to do it.

“Then, when the game came out in the US, the whole debate with localization vs. fan-translation was getting very out of hand, so that also contributed to us stopping. People arguing and complaining about the localization and putting the fan-translation on a pedestal.”

OK, now I’m starting to see issues. I have no other way to define this besides “stupid”.

So what if we’ve put it on a pedestal? The fan translation in most cases was more accurate than the localization, I preferred it over the shitty localization.

So did everyone else that looked over your patch and wanted to get away from dank memes.

“Okay, so the localization has errors and problems, and what?”

    …?

Dude, I think I gave you an entire album with the changes in the localization. it’s not a few “errors and problems”, almost everything is shit in it.

“We have a lot more grammar errors and typos than the localization,”

You’re not professionals, you said you’ll fix it, I see no problem.

THEY ARE PROFESSIONALS, THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY EXCUSE. THEY ARE BEING PAID. THEY ARE GIVING US SHIT.

How many times do I have to tell you THIS before you can get it in your head?

“not even half of the support conversations translated, plenty of bugs, and many other miscellaneous stuff untranslated.”

And you said you’ll finish them. AGAIN, we were waiting patiently. So what’s the problem?

“We didn’t want all this drama to happen at all. We just wanted to create a patch for those that imported the game and have it be playable to them if they can’t read what the menus and items say.”

Dude, you guys had nothing to do with the drama. You self-inserted yourselves into this for no reason. What pressure did you guys get?

None at all, since you weren’t part of the discussions. No, let’s take this another way…

Everyone that put you into this discussion did not need you to be in it anyway, you could not only ignore it, but could also just avoid it and commit to the work you claimed you would do.

“Everything else, like the story and stuff, was just extra and something we wanted to do for fun.”

No one said they’re not fine with you stopping the project.

Why you did it though, and the way you reacted is another story. I think I was pretty clear in that same thread.

    “Plus, “whinny faggots”?”

You and Shadow at least. Although the admin of your team also has a stick up his ass. Maybe not only one, I have to ask…

The reason I didn’t talk to you like this on Serenes Forest or the subreddit is because I like to fit the rules… Don’t worry, here it’s fair play.

“I really don’t want to hear that from you when you keep whining and being freaking entitled that you should have gotten the game the way it should have been.”

As I said, this argument is shit because we’re not “entitled”, you can’t be entitled when you are a customer. You’re paying money for a product, if the product is faulty, you have every right to complain.

“I’m surprised you even linked that Reddit post. Because you had a lot more sand in your worn out vagina while about the localization. https://www.reddit.com/r/firee…”

I have nothing to hide after all. :^)

“Either way, what’s done is done.”

Indeed, hopefully your team leader keeps his word and gives the project to someone that is responsible.

  • Cerzel

So why not just say this shit instead of the totally standoffish announcement and posts that have been made in the forums?

  • DizzyGear

You somehow miss the whole #torrentialdownpour campaign?
Hes hardly the only one that think the official localisation is a massive piece of shit that has allot more wrong with it than “just a few errors”.

  • Linkmstr

That’s just how luyairis is. Don’t take it too offensive. Some of us can be assholes and some of us aren’t.

  • That’s really a shame…at least the restoration patch still in the work…
i’m way more fond of literal translation in general, than a Full Bad rewrite than NoA propose, i can forgive typos in fan translation but NOT in Official translation, Why? it’s their job they are getting paid for it,

Maybe the Fan translation should open a Paypal for Donation or something like that. but well it’s too late for that.

  • Cerzel

If you understand that that’s how he is then you should really understand why people aren’t taking the news well.

  • buddyluv324

Way to pull that dick move calling consumers entitled because a product people paid for turned out faulty. After reading the article and looking over the reddit posts, as someone who’s coming into this from a 3rd person perspective it sounds like you guys just simply didnt have the competence to pull off the project. If you guys aren’t able to handle the valid issues thats being discussed about the game that you have to dick ride Nintendo to defend them ( which itself is suspicious), then I think fan translation….or anything related to gaming isnt your field. Dont take the door, go out the window.

  • Firion Hope

I don’t want to get in to it too much but it is LITERALLY the worst modern day console translation I have seen aside from SAO. Yes awakening was bad, and the previous FEs weren’t as faithful as they should have been, but its worse. There are literally hundreds of examples of completely unnecessary changes on top of several really bad ones and censorship.

Yes the fanslation is imperfect but not only is it done for free but it has the ability to improve infinitely, we’re stuck with with whatever ninty crapped out literally forever. I mean instead it should tell you something that even something full of typos is still preferred to what we were given, and not that they’re all just “entitled”. And considering how rare translations are of confirmed games and all that I’ve said of course it would be held up. Either way the drama would’ve happened regardless because people are becoming more aware of TL quality, pretty silly reason to stop.

  • Shiggy Diggy Doo

    Much appreciated

  • DizzyGear

    Did someone just say entitled?

  • Narmy

Anyone who really cares about Japanese games should just bite the bullet and learn Japanese instead of relying on fan translations anyway.

Very few Japanese only games get fan translations, especially nowadays as game software gets more complicated, and even fewer get retranslations when the official localization is totally fucked up.

  • Firion Hope

Seriously such an overused word. I actually always liked the food comparison. If someone burns your steak you paid for you don’t act happy to get it at all, you ask for another one or get your money back

  • Linkmstr

Again, we’ve had several reasons as to why we stopped. And we were already talking about stopping before the US version came out. One of the main reason is that we just lost motivation after translating the third path, Revelation/Invisible Kingdom. The whole drama just pushed it even further to making us stop. We are very aware of how disappointed some people are for us stopping.

Anyway, some other group may come out and continue where we stopped. There aren’t any guarantees or promises, but you guys may be lucky.

  • Firion Hope

fair enough, was just addressing that part of it

  • Holy crap. After seeing one of the translators comment down here, the team comes off as a bunch of egotistical douche-nozzles.

“Deal with it. We don’t feel the need to justify ourselves.”

They’re starting to sound like that guy overprotective asshat that used to work on the Sonic 2 HD Remake.

  • DizzyGear

Funny enough youtuber Louis Le Vau did a vid on it yesterday on how that word became so commonplace as an easy way to defend shitty practices in gaming. Shame its a bit rambly though.

  • H. Guderian

Pass off the work you did to someone else. We’re supposed to be a damn community translating things because the powers that be are against us. Now because you can’t finish the translation entirely with only your own group you’re gonna actively spike the efforts to get a fan translation done in a timely manner. This smells more of cowardice.

  • Firion Hope

Theres one to apply what exists of the fan translation to the US edition in dev. (and actually theres one already out in the wild but lacks amie) so at least the majority won’t be treehouse text. After that and amie gets released I’m just going to play the other two paths. Been waiting patiently for months for the last support patch only to have this happen so I just want to finish the game.

  • Thanatos2k

So theres a patch for a partly patched version? I’ll just wait a little longer until this sorts itself out.
Thankfully ive only played up to the choice where you take a side and still have a few other games in my backlog queue.

  • DizzyGear

    Sounds like you have fans.

Hey appreciate you commenting here to try to clear some of the air here to those who might appreciate it.

I do have one question for you (assuming you are capable of answering): Why did you decide to keep some of the finished translations amongst the group and not dump whatever you had finish?

I believe that’s where a lot animosity is coming from and a clarification could help to alleviate some of it.

  • Immahnoob

    I fully agree with this.

He and his team worked on the patch for a year or two, said that only one route was needed to be done (they only released one route), said they only had one route left to finish.

    >MIA for 4 whole months with no updates or any news with the logbook they had. Came back, and said we’re gonna drop this.

    >People ask for the unfinished patch dump so another team can work on it. They said nope fuck you.

    >People egg them on twitter even for a while
    >Says “fine” and will look for another team to translate instead of dumping the files
    >1-2 years later…
    >Nothing

Look I don’t really disagree that they aren’t obligated from continuing the patch and the whatnot, fine with that. But at the very least, please at least tell your fans who have been following your fantranslation patch a reason why you decide not to dump the files. Why not just dump the files anonymously if your afraid of admitting to C&D, or even just passing it to another team instead of saying “NOPE fuck you.”

Either way this was a huge fuckstorm, I don’t even wanna see the reddit thread if it even exists.

  • junebug

I’m honestly surprised that what seem like such difficult, thick people even managed to come together and make any progress on a fan translation in the first place.

Oh well. Game sucks regardless of translation quality.

  • Firion Hope

    Indeed

  • Eugenio Gil de la Madrid

I respect you and your teams opinion and specially the hardwork done. But the truth is that the Treehouse localization is utter trash and it’s not entitlement to want a good product or the original product that was promised.

You guys where doing a great job and it pains me that actual competence isn’t rewarded as it should. Treehouse’s incopetence is something that affects and damages the industry. If anything competent people should be rewarded, while Treehouse should be burned for their incompetence.

  • Immahnoob

Similar people tend to converge towards the same groups, don’t they? :^)

  • Chocolate ISISCream

Okay… whatever, man. As long as the content restoration is still happening. I really don’t have a problem with them dropping that translation, and I’d also see why it’d cease, seeing as how there’s already one that’s readily available.

  • Immahnoob

    http://archive.is/QLszX

    And they answered.

  • Guin

The hate is warranted for a few specific groups because they think pissing off their followers is so epic kewl.

  • Guin

They’re bronies. That’s proof enough for their questionable work ethic and attitudes.

  • Pepper

No sympathy points. Honestly, their egos are terrible. They should stop acting like they care for the FE fanbase when they turn around and insult people who wanted it. They literally did the thing they claimed they wanted to avoid in the past: Divide the fanbase even more.

  • Guin

They think the entire non Japanese speaking world owes them favors and it gets worse the deeper they involve themselves in the project. I also conjecture that a lot of them are closet normies just by how much they love to blog about having “lives.”

Yeah, like we give a shit that you went to a bar and had a taste of normie life that you hardly ever get. You’re just as much of a loser as the rest of us.

  • Immahnoob

I acted condescending towards their team when they did the same. I acted respectful so I don’t break the rules or piss them off before that.

  • TsukuyomiMagi99

So will this project continue or not? Seems like a new group is taking over.

  • junebug

True, but to actually be able to work together is- wait, no, I’m suddenly remembering all the patting-each-other-on-the-back these types tend to engage in.

  • Pepper

I know. I can see some of the responses you had were questions and not insults. But I’m talking about the excuse given that you and a few others is enough for them to pretty much say fuck this and fuck you to everyone else. Like, how do they expect to be the bigger man in this situation if they are admitting that its only a few people pissing them off? -_-

  • tBanzai

Project’s continuing with a different team if anyone’s interested in helping:

  • Wulfen73

So you are upset that people are upset with people who not only got peoples hopes up only to cut them out from under them. But did so in an extremely rude and condescending way and refuse to allow others to build off the work they did.

Thus all their donated time amounts to nothing, they didn’t give the community anything but empty promises… and the fact that this has upset people is wrong somehow. Maybe I’m just getting old but when someone makes a promise where I’m from they keep it, and if for some reason they can’t they make sure to arrange for someone else to finish off following through.

I’m not sure how the fact that they were donating their time has anything to do with anything.

You blab on about entitlement like people demanded these people make the patch, not that they took it on of their own accord and made promises they have decided not to follow through on. It isn’t entitlement to hold people to their word.

  • Guin

He has done Bloody Monday and Area no Kishi. Both very entertaining manga imo.

But really, just because he works with manga doesn’t imply that the overall writing will become lower than say if they brought Dostoevsky back from the dead.

  • Guin

Japanese pen pal master race reporting in. I also have native Japanese friends who help me out.

  • Gigaknight

I must echo the other responses.

I also agree with DizzyGear–I’m currently using Anki for kanji and radicals (in an attempt to make learning kanji easier). It does feel very much like a brute force attempt, and it’s moving fairly slowly.

Your input (with regard to a more effective way to learn) would be much appreciated.

  • Richard Miller

    Bronies are lazy?

  • Immahnoob

    Yeah, they’ll continue most likely.

  • Guin

They’re too busy talking about their favorite ponies it precedes everything important in their lives so yes, they are.

  • Pepper

Hopefully people without a huge stick up their ass decides to continue it.

  • dsadsada

To be fair, they’ve been planning on quitting for a while now and it seems like even Immahnoob acknowledges that so they’re not necessarily quitting just because there are people, however many or few, that pissed them off.

However that doesn’t excuse acting like being asked questions that they don’t have an answer to (when will it be done) is entitlement.

  • Jumanji Joe

Implying they weren’t blogging about their progress. If any of us can go find out about it you better believe corporate lawyers can.

  • grgspunk

I don’t know what the hell is going on in your group, but it’s pretty clear to me that there’s something affecting your ability to work on the title that you’re not telling anyone.

You lost the drive to work on the translation because people are holding your translation to a pedestal? Umm… What the fuck?

Your efforts to translate the title got more recognition and respect than what most fan translators would ever dream of getting. I’ve seen multiple instances where fan translators have ended up quitting due to a lack of motivation because they never got enough respect and recognition, not the other goddamned way around.

Okay, so you’re not sure what is the deal with Treehouse’s localization. So what? If I was the one working on the patch people began to grow confident that I can create something even better than what was officially put out, then I’d be using that as motivation to put out the best damned translation I can get.

Okay, you were never fully committed to the patch at first. So why did you even bother in the first place? Even if it were the case, if there was anything to actually motivate you to actually commit yourselves, it should’ve been the respect you got from fans: The very fucking respect that you’re blaiming fans for making you quit.

Most fan translators never even receive half the praise or appreciation for their work as you did. Most fan translators would’ve been greatful if they received even a fraction of fan respect as you did.

Yet you use that recognition and praise not as a motivator, but rather as an excuse to blame your fans for making you quit what you yourself started?

Wow, you’re a fucking piece of shit if I ever saw one.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

Not surprising seeing how this thing from my understanding was started on Reddit or Neogaf.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

“I really don’t want to hear that from you when you keep whining and
being freaking entitled that you should have gotten the game the way it
    should have been.”

I miss when “entitled” wasn’t ran into the ground by candyassed idiots.

  • DDD-kun

“Lol, please this isn’t as fucking bad the visual novel fantranslation community. By the gods are they fucking horrendous”

SPOILERS: All around the world, the same song. This is no different. Legit and literal, no different from the rancor once upon a time around Mirror Moon, no different around Sekai Project, no different than the numerous digs of the GG sub group, or Anbu, or Commie. Everywhere you go, it’s going to be the same ordeals.

At this rate I’m royally indifferent because and only because I’ve seen this happen so very many times before. The thing all of you should be looking out for right now, right this very minute, is if the next participants for this particular fanpatch are even going to follow through, or if they’re going to dangle a proverbial carrot over everyone’s head.

  • BurgerUnit

I have to give you props though, for trying to engage in a rational conversation with a bunch of fanatic apologists in their nest. You probably expected the conversation to go as well as it did and did it anyway. So… thanks for that.

  • Matthew Hage

If it’s “entitled” to want some semblance of quality control, then by gosh golly, call me entitled.

This is Patrick Klepek-levels of ignorance right here.

  • TheCynicalReaper

Well that sucks and the new info our fair fellow commenters here are posting does shine light on more reasons why, BUT they did ultimately accomplish most of their goal, with the main story of all three routes translated and much of the Supports translated (especially the sibling ones).
Good enough for me, though I wish it could continue.

  • TheCynicalReaper

First, regardless of what we think of each other, I appreciate your comment here very much!

    Now:
“Okay, so the localization has errors and problems, and what?”
Perhaps since most of you on the fan translation team are college students or college freshmen you don’t realize the cancer of Cultural Marxism and/or can’t spot how OVERTLY propagandist the “feminist overtones” are in a project that does not remotely desire them.

    Secondly,
“We have a lot more grammar errors and typos than the localization, not even half of the support conversations translated, plenty of bugs, and many other miscellaneous stuff untranslated.”
AND YET YOU DID NOT INSERT DATED POP REFERENCES OR IDEOLOGICAL FILTH AND DIDN’T CUT CONTENT WHOLESALE!
How do you not get this? THIS is why the fan translation, as incomplete with the Supports it may be, is vastly superior: because it was done by people who GAVE A DAMN and didn’t want to propagandize or ruin a game they appreciated.

  • TheCynicalReaper

    To close:
“…Being freaking entitled that you should have gotten the game the way it should have been.”
You mean the Treehouse rape of the source material? I hope you don’t mean that, because it is purely logical that, yes, when we pay for a product we want that product not some Marxist Bazinga!! trash (with CUT CONTENT).

I am paying money for a “thing”. I am thus entitled to “thing”.
If “thing” is not really “thing” but instead “ThAngZ” then I have been ripped-off.

“I’m surprised you even linked that Reddit post.
Because you had a lot more sand in your worn out vagina about the localization.”
The localization is TRASH and EVERYONE knows it.

Actually, about that. We’ve decided to hand over the stuff over to another group for them to continue on. That’s all I can say from here.

  • Smug

Kanjidamage does make the 漢字 a lot more easier to learn as it focuses on radicals. Basically if you learn 言(*う – to say)you should able to see the same stroke used in 読(*む – to read) or 語 (language) which are less or more related to the thema of language, or being able to read compound words by yourself as you expand your kanji knowledge. Reminder that some combination of strokes or characters wont make much sense (like 談 for ‘to consult’ which use the radical 炎 for flame/fire), or are just downright comical (like 痴漢 which literally mean a chinese molester for a ‘train pervert’), but it will a lot more easier to remember once you see the patterns and not just as complete new words with random use of strokes.

Learning kanji with brute force (like most sources are trying to teach you) is like teaching a young kid complete words without teaching him/her the alphabet letters first.

  • Smug

What I said above to Dizzygear for the kanji part, though I would also add the Genki books (if you can, get the second print edition), Tae kim and imabi(dot)net, and ‘Japanese the Manga Way’ by Lammers (Stone Bridge Press edition) as sources for basic vocabulary and especially the japanese grammar.

Those were my main sources so far.

What I said above to DizzyGear (as well to Fenrir below) about it.

People prefer the fan translation because we don’t like the way that characters were rewritten or how serious lines of dialogue were replaced with memes, lame humour, or sometimes even nothing at all.

I have played many mangled translations which failed due to a lack of talent, but Nintendo’s official translation seems to fail on purpose – which is immeasurably worse.

This is the worst and most lazy localisation that I have seen in a very long time.

  • deadeye

Honestly, I blame Awakening for this mentality. It brought in a lot of new people and set the bar incredibly low. It attracted the kind of people that will play a game solely because it has cute anime girls in it and don’t care about anything else.

Most places I go to, 90% of discussion about this game is just waifus. Fire Emblem is dead. Whereas before Awakening there was discussion about all the characters, discussion about the story, the gameplay, now it’s all just fan fiction tier “which waifu would you fug”. Because that’s the only thing to care about now.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. I wish Fire Emblem had just died than Awakening swoop in and “saved” it. Even leaving aside the awful translations, everything I’ve heard about the stories is nothing great. And then you have Revelations which is basically the “good end” locked behind $20 DLC. That is worse than EA. Nintendo is fucking WORSE than EA.

  • Feniks

    Nintendo fans will buy anything.

  • Immahnoob

“It attracted the kind of people that will play a game solely because it has cute anime girls in it and don’t care about anything else.”

If you’d be right, we wouldn’t have such a circlejerk in that subreddit. That’s because they would try to protect the original characters.

  • Immahnoob

No problem, it’s not the first time I interacted with the circlejerk that is /r/FireEmblem anyway.

My first time was on the matter of “censorship” as a whole.

These people can’t keep up in any argument.

  • deadeye

Yeah, but a lot of the discussion I’ve seen, they don’t care about the personality at all or will straight up make up their own. They only care about looks.

The waifu obsession with this game happened with the very first trailer, before anything was known. There was fanart of characters that appeared for just a few frames in some trailers.

  • Feniks

If you pay for something you’re ENTITLED to get a good product. Otherwise demand money back.

  • CC

    “Put on a pedestal.”

No. Fuck that. No one worth listening to is asking for perfection. People can bicker all they want about individual words, but the majority of fans who loathe Treehouse’s translation just want the actual game in full, not the 4Kids shit version. You could ALMOST just use GOOGLE TRANSLATE and I think more fans would be happier with that than Treehouse. My *DAD* would. He was pretty pissed off that they removed so much and fucked up so badly, and he wanted to just use a basic translator, but that’s barely possible since it would require so much work. Which was why I, AND OTHERS, were so damned appreciative of the effort you were putting in. That doesn’t make us entitled you little snot. Nor did it mean we were suddenly idolizing you. We were just fucking appreciative because we’re not as much assholes as you.

Lose your attitude. ‘Weh weh being at the center of drama is exhausting and we don’t want the attention just because we didn’t drag our asses all over the carpet of this production!’ /s Wow how horrible for you.

Sayonara and good luck in the future on whatever you do, but if you seriously think this isn’t going to piss people off, you’re even more deluded than Treehouse’s ass kissers.

  • CC

Jeez how entitled do you have to be to not appreciate E.T. despite its flaws and errors? Aren’t you a Speilberg fan? DO YOU WANT THE INDUSTRY TO COLLAPSE? Gamers are such pieces of shit.

  • harlanwade

Geez, what a huge steamy mess this situations is. I’m reading through the forum topic posted a coulple of times in the comments here and let me tell you, what a terrible first impression I’m getting (as someone not very familiar with these fan translation communities). Let me just say one of the team members (who I think was the team lead? not sure), is an asshole. And not for his “non-sugarcoated” language; his answers suck, period, regardless of how he phrases them. Don’t expect people to accept “We don’t care” as a valid response to anything. That should be obvious, but I guess he thinks he can treat people however badly he feels like?

I’m reading a response by a sensible poster right now in regards to them keeping all their progress to themselves and they say “I personally find that to be downright obnoxious, but ultimately it’s your decision what you do with your progress.” It’s true that it’s their decision. It’s just a shame that it is their decision. It’s a shame that it’s up to these guys. It’s a shame that the people who eagerly wanted a quality english translation of something they loved had no one else to turn to; that they had to rely on these clearly incompetent egomaniacs, who would rather spend time complaining about people’s reasonable requests for information than actually give the barest amount required to assuage those requests.

Now the comments I’m reading currently come from March 22nd, and I believe some new information has come out. Still, I wanted to give my impression as an outsider looking into these fan translation communities. I’m not impressed in the least.

  • BurgerUnit

Yeah I haven’t played any since Radiant Dawn (mostly because I didn’t have a 3ds when awakening hit) but I’m not a big fan of the direction it went either.

I’m not above fanservice and pandering and all that jazz (I’m a Neptunia fan ffs 🤐), but I prefer to keep it separate from games that have compelling stories and characters and where I find myself actually getting invested in.

That said, since it’s the direction they’re going, they might as well go full bore with it. Which is why I really question why they took out the face touching thing among other things. Now you have this product that is half-assed in all regards.

And yeah, that DLC is pure bs but it’s pretty much guaranteed profit as people will lap it up.

  • Black_Bob

Good god this thread and other threads…

Ok, I’m thankful that the translation project has been given to another team. Hopefully we get the same semblance of quality that the previous team gave. If the previous team is too busy to finish it, fair enough.

In other news, I learned another new word that gets thrown around a lot for the wrong reasons. Here’s my list:

Entitled – To give (a person or thing) a title, right, or claim to something; furnish with grounds for laying claim.

Creepy – Having or causing a creeping sensation of the skin, as from horror or fear.

Literally – Adverb of “Literal” – in accordance with, involving, or being the primary or strict meaning of the word or words; not figurative or metaphorical.

Irony – The use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning.

Triggered – An verb of “Trigger” – 3. to initiate or precipitate (a chain of events, scientific reaction, psychological process, etc.)

The context in which these words are used doesn’t seem to warrant their proper use. In other words – people keep using them incorrectly.

  • Thanatos2k

I’m not upset. I laugh at the whining.

I laugh at the fact that you think they PROMISED anything.

Saying “all their donated time amounts to nothing” is a lie as it is, because they did release most of what they’d finished.

  • Thanatos2k

There was nothing in my comment that was wrong. The comments below prove that.

  • harlanwade

“We ended this project without considering its popularity. We ended it
because, to put it simply, we’re done. We won’t be working on it
    anymore. ”
-“We ended this project because we ended it.”
Thanks, Captain Obvious. Try giving an actual explanation next time.

  • Wulfen73

You aren’t laughing, you are attempting to conduct a defense, do you think I can’t see your other posts?

Saying you will do something, promising something, same thing, it is your word. Breaking it is still breaking it.

It isn’t a lie, they weren’t going to release it, they said they would once the backlash got hard enough. Also very honest interpretation there, I couldn’t be wrong, couldn’t be mistaken it had to be a lie.

  • harlanwade

It’s simple: don’t give people expectations that you won’t be able to meet. When you do fail to meet them, people will be upset at your incompetence. That’s how the world works. Call it entitlement all you want. Entitlement is not a dirty word.

  • Pepper

Because don’t insult fanfiction writers. Fire Emblem was high on the fanfiction before Awakening (you can look at the page and its one of the highest written fandoms on the website). Shipping has always been a huge thing. Awakening is only now bringing it to the surface with actual shipping in the actual game.

And the reason I take offense to this is how fan art is the same thing as fanfiction but only fanfiction gets shit on because people stereotype it as badly written insert mary sues which was already around during FE7. Any game with a tactician gets that but it has gotten harder to do that in Fates when Corrin has an actual character (and isn’t that good of a tactician in comparison to Robin who lacked a lot of character due to not being the main character).

  • chaoguy

While that does not seem to be the case anymore, what is a canary warrant?

  • Thanatos2k

Except the expectations for fan translations of anything are always “It’d be nice if they finish anything and release it for free.” (Secondary expectation: “It’d be nice if it didn’t suck”)

If those aren’t your expectations, some personal introspection may be required. If you paid for something, you have a right to be angry about incompetence. If they had crowdfunded the translation project, taken money so they could devote their time for it and flaked out, I’d be right behind you railing against them. But if someone is doing something purely for free, and not even specifically for you, you really shouldn’t be expecting anything…..

  • Thanatos2k

From my interpretation of the forum posts, they had already released parts of the translation they had already finished, but hadn’t gotten to the support conversations.

  • Fenrir007

I changed the word order – its warrant canary. Its basically a way of displaying to the public that “shit just got real” in case you receive a government order to do something but preventing you from telling people you are doing so. You can check up on it here in more detail:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrant_canary

  • Fenrir007

How far along are you? Can you play a VN already?

  • harlanwade

I might agree with you if this situation was a simple as you described it. However, the feelings of anger are focused on the attitudes of the people involved, not the cancellation of the project. These guys had fans who were enthusiastic about the work that they were doing for free; I’ve only seen nothing but appreciation for their work. But not only did they fail to meet their expectations, they also stubbornly refused to be transparent about what was going on. When asked for clarification, this asshole responded with snarky ass remarks and condescension, saying “we don’t care” and “deal with it”. Then they were stingy about sharing their unfinished work so that it could be completed by others, and the only reason given was because we don’t want to. Yeah, people aren’t obligated to accept such a ridiculous answer.
Fans who are passionate about your project don’t deserve to be talked down to like that.
The team members’ inflated egos is what caused this drama. If this project was cancelled with a simple “Sorry guys, but we are no longer motivated to continue,” and they were willing to give their fans proper answers to their concerns and share their unfinished work, then this situation would not have blown up the way it did.
Yes, they are free to do as they wish with their own project. That doesn’t make them free from criticism.

  • Thanatos2k

His responses were responding to passive aggressive comments by resident asshole “If they didn’t have rules I’d act like a piece of shit all the time” Immahnoob though. I didn’t see many unreasonable things in the postings.

I mean, everything he said was absolutely correct. You can take exception to their attitude, but it was only in response to the entitlement. I’ve seen countless fansubbers over the years tell commenters to take a walk after demanding “progress updates” it’s not abnormal in the slightest. I mean, look below. One of their people came and calmly explained their progress and people are still whining and calling them faggots. I’d tell such people to shut the fuck up too.

  • Doge

I still love they admit that they did it to spite people who were using it to expose the Treehouse. A case of people who shit on those who were patiently waiting in favor of getting back at one person.
