For those showing concerns over the launch roster for Pokken Tournament, it seems like Nintendo and developer Bandai Namco aren’t looking to expand it anytime soon.

In a report from Serebii, Nintendo and Bandai Namco have stated they currently have no plans to add characters or stages to the game, post launch via downloadable content.

“It has also been stated that there are currently no plans to release additional Pokémon or stages through downloadable content,” the statement reads.

The entire launch roster for the game includes:

  • Blaziken
  • Braixen
  • Chandelure
  • Charizard
  • Gardevoir
  • Garchomp
  • Gengar
  • Lucario
  • Machamp
  • Mewtwo
  • Pikachu
  • Pikachu Libre
  • Sceptile
  • Shadow Mewtwo
  • Suicune
  • Weavile

Pokkén Tournament is launching worldwide for Wii U on March 18th.

Wait what? Isn’t this defeating the point of the game and franchise?

  • Tako Luka

    wut

    pokemanz is dlc reincarnated

  • Heavily Augmented

Considering how criticized the game was in Japan, I’m going to take the wild guess the game’s not very good.

  • Immahnoob

I mean, the rooster is shit. You guys need more pokemon.

  • TheMaverickGamer

With the giant pool of Pokémon to choose from, you would figure that the roster would be much larger. I’m cool with Garchomp, but none of my other favorites (Blastoise, Feraligatr, the Eevee-lutions, among others) made it in. I have it pre-ordered, but I might take my chances and see if it gets any cheaper post-launch.

  • deadeye

I wouldn’t say it’s shit, really. But more pokemon would be welcome.

  • Chocolate ISISCream

How do you not have Ditto in this as a cliche mimic character!?

  • Mr0303

Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan should’ve been in the game. I suppose Bandai is working with limited resources.

  • sanic

No plans to buy this due to tiny amount of characters, although it looked interesting.

  • Pico

Why would you release DLC pokemon, when you can release a better version with more pokemon in Pokken 2 exclusive to NX

  • Pyroco

    You forgot about Dark Mewtwo.

  • Uncle Ocelot

    >Only 15 fighters
    >Including 2 Pikachus

    What a shame.

  • scemar

My guess is the bad reception of the game so far hasn’t convinced them to start DLC plans yet.
If things turn for the better once it’s out in the west they might start to plan some DLC, but at this point with the NX right around the corner they might just do a remake like smash and do the DLC for it.

Or realistically, they could do both.

  • Softclocks

    game will be shit

  • 2501

How is this a headliner at EVO?

  • Hey guys – I forgot to add Shadow Mewtwo into the roster – there’s 16 characters at launch.

  • Pooh Hardy

IKR like no fighting game should have that little in a universe with tons of characters

  • Pooh Hardy

they’re working on a lot of things

plus this doesn’t deconfirm update release characters

  • Immahnoob

    True.

  • Richard Miller

    This will bomb.

  • Galbador

Actually, 15 to 20 fighters are more than enough for me. More and it would remind me to a bad Mugen game, where you have more than 100+ charas and only 8 rounds while you fight in random way again 8 characters. As far as I know, SF2 had only 8 fighters and it was great. But this is only my opinion. I will keep an eye on this game and maaaybe buy it. Not a big fan of Beat ’em Ups anymore since such games went so damn fast with combos and whatsoever that I couldn’t hold up.

Meh… Skullgirls still has only like 10 characters, and it is still the most beloved fighting game right now. Size isn’t everything in a fighting game, and MK Armageddon showcased it perfectly. The quality of the characters is what counts.

  • Although I get what you mean, that’s Skullgirls and this is Pokemon.

Pokemon is a franchise which has several key characteristics, one of the main ones being that there are many, many different Pokemon and players are encouraged to pick and choose their favourites to use. This is why games which feature Pokemon (such as Pokemon Conquest) tend to have many characters.

That being said, I think there are bigger problems with this than a middling character roster.

  • An Tran

No plans huh? With that small of a roster in this day and age and no plans to add more, I’ll be waiting for a price drop of at least 50%.

  • An Tran

    You’re comparing a $15 game to a $60 game though.

  • Tomata O’Hare

A price drop on Nintendo games? You gonna be waiting a good long while then.

  • sanic

    Skullgirls is a shit though.

  • Dakt

Kind of glad they’re going the tight balanced roster route with this instead of the Smash Bros route

  • Spermtwo

It takes a while to actually master any said character. So while your favorite may have been nixed for furry fan favs like Lucario and Gardevoir, rest assured that if you want to ever beat anyone you’ll have plenty of time between launch and when they do decide to start bleeding your wallet for DLC.
