Valkyrie Drive: Bhikkhuni Only Releasing in Japan, Despite Game Director’s Wishes

Valkyrie Drive Bhikkuni 10-02-15-1

It seems like Marvelous’ lesbian-powered action game/series Valkyrie Drive may be too hot for western audiences.

Fans have been anxiously hoping that the series’ PS Vita game, Valkyrie Drive: Bhikkhuni, will get a western release. However, it seems like this isn’t happening, according to series creator and huge boob producer Kenichiro Takaki.

“Currently, localized version will be released is not unfortunately. Only in Japanese version. I want to release…” said Takaki on his Twitter.

It’s unclear what this really means, aside from the game not coming west. You could definitely infer that Takaki simply wishes to release the game worldwide (as he’s previously expressed his wish to wrap the world in happy boobs), but is running into issues getting the localization greenlit.

Marvelous Games, the European publisher for Marvelous Japan, expressed their interest in localizing the game:

“We’d love to too!,” said Marvelous on Twitter when responding to a game pleading for XSEED Games and or Marvelous to localize the game.

It’s also worth mentioning that English trophies for the game were spotted last year.

Would you guys like to see Valkyrie Drive: Bhikkhuni get a worldwide release? Sound off in the comments below!

Seriously? Wasn’t DOA Xtreme 3 enough? Hope we do get more context in the future though. There’s quite a bit of interpretation from the tweet.

  • Patrick Toworfe

Unfortunate. Although a lot of Japanese niche titles don’t get released outside Japan for the most part, overwhelmingly so. Doesn’t help that the content is what it is, as that will make people assume the worst. Given what happened recently with DOAX, there’s no surprise there.

  • inquisitormcsagington

Y’know the phrase “This is why we can’t have nice things”?
Next time you hear a whiny Feminist or SJW use this phrase, follow these simple instructions.

    1-Cease what you are doing
2 Turn to person who uttered these words
    3 Point
4 say “You. You are why we can not have nice things”.

Because they are. I will bet that the entire reason the west won’t see this is because of the danger of “offending” some stupid cunt.

  • TsukuyomiMagi99

fee fi fo fum I smell cunty SJW scum.

    We’ll all go crush Patriarchy

  • NightmareNear

Yeah. Though it was funny when they censored that one episode of Steven Universe for two seconds in Europe. I just tweeted about SJWs, who were Pro-Censorship saying “You’ve got EXACTLY what you asked for. How does it feel when it happens to something you like?”

  • Urobolus

So how many people have you said these cringe-worthy lines to?

As someone who imported this game, can’t say I’m surprised at all. Maybe I’ll just win the Powerball, buy a game publishing house, rename it SJW Games and then publish the shit out of this.

  • Daryl Corey

Honestly that is pretty much the best powerball money plan I have heard.

  • bateruchan

Please do! Please publish all kinds of goodies!

  • tccboss

I was just going to keep the money myself but this is a better plan.

  • Alexis Nascimento-Lajoie

    Today isn’t a good day…

  • Brimfyre

Does the game feature a patriarchy of some kind? Seems like lesbians becoming powerful weapons to take down society, would be something a lot of SJWs would be all about.

  • Guest

SJWs are incapable of seeing anything in a positive light. They would just say objectification this, sexism that, misogyny, the lesbians are only there to suffer under the vicious male gaze of white cis-het males, etc.

  • TsukuyomiMagi99

Yet their idea of a good game is a house cleaning simulator staring a black woman !

  • Kiryu

If that’s not the stereotype of racism then i don’t know what that is.

  • DariusQ

Yup. Nothing but hypocrisy. The only thing SJWs are really interested in is getting their way, no matter how absurd or contradictory it may be.

  • bateruchan

You cannot appeal to them. You cannot make these types of people happy. “Oh, but they lose their clothes” is enough to make these people buttflustered.

Even though ripping clothes is honestly very realistic for how these girls will slide on concrete and such… and yes, I went there. I don’t even care about the ‘realistic’ argument 9 times out of 10, but if that’s the fuel they’re using for their fire, I’ll use it back at them.

I think SJW even complained about Animal Crossing and Isabelle/Shizue being so ‘subservient’. Think about that for a moment: a game where you can freely cross dress when you want, decorate things as you want, with options for cool and cute towns… and they complained! You cannot win and if you think you can you are W R O N G.

Even Stephen Universe fandom goes fucking apeshit over stupid shit in the show that doesn’t do things 100% perfect in their corrupted minds.

  • scemar

Need we remind you how it works with SJW?

This is the most basic of basic facts about SJW: They are not really activists for any cause and have no real logical views, they do not follow a cause and effect goal based mentality.

They are a self serving political group whose only goal is to create problems, present themselves as the solution, and use that as means to get more funding or more authority in the public and private sectors.

  • Para-Medic

In a world where uncensored Monpiece is coming to Steam. (A predominantly western market) I really don’t see the fucking problem anymore.

We can have uncensored loli’s, but not lesbians? I mean… what?

  • http://kancolle.wikia.com/wiki/Tenryuu Tenryuu

I feel like most people will conveniently ignore this because “Steam.”

But yes it sure would be nice if Japan could find their balls again and put money over outrage on their list of “things to care about.”

  • Derp Minos

Steam is immune to SJWs, that’s probably why.

  • scemar

    For now.
We must stay with our eyes open, ready to spot and alarm any possible problem.
They did almost get Hatred out once if it wasn’t for based Gaben getting involved, and that would have opened the door for more games censored out of Steam.

  • Derp Minos

I think with Monster Monpiece coming on Steam uncensored and even an uncensored lesbian lolige we can say Steam is going to be fine.

  • Antoinant

    You poor naive soul
Where is my Vertiminde Steam Review pic when I need it

  • edge

O.o, can I get an explanation?

  • bateruchan

UNCENSORED MONPIECE?! I may have to buy this game a second time!

  • Para-Medic
  • Momiji

Well, they haven’t added adult/hentai games yet. Maybe they’ll create a red light district for that later on, I dunno, but there still is a lot of games that gets edited on Steam. Criminal girls first one coming to mind because their added censorship is… Wait for it… Steam!

  • Para-Medic

I know you were trying to make a joke, but passing readers might take you seriously. (I’ll give you a upvote for effort though lol) Criminal Girls is not on Steam and if it were, I suspect that like Monpiece, it would come uncensored.

There are numerous AO and unrated games on Steam now. (Discouraged Workers is an AO Visual Novel that comes to mind) Even the edited ones you’re talking about can be uncensored with two minutes in google via a patch. IE: Nekopara.

If you’re looking for Eroge in specific though, PC is your only option. In recent years many English publishers have cropped up like JAST USA, and Manga Gamer.

Either way, boundaries are always being pushed on Steam. I mean two years ago, the platform was almost completely devoid of Japanese games, and now it’s booming with all kinds of weeb games. XD I love it.

  • Momiji

Aye, you are absolutely correct. PC/Mobile has a marked monopoly on those things. I remember you stating in a different thread that PEGI ratings and such doesn’t censor games, which is true isolated. However, all the major consoles actually don’t sell AO rated games on them, which is why erotic/hentai games only exists on PC, if I remember correctly.

I personally have not taken much part in that industry, though considering the porn industry is in fact bigger than the movie industry, it wouldn’t be unrealistic to see some rather big dollars being rolled around the theme. With the implementation of VR just around the corner I don’t foresee it to become any smaller as the years pass by either.

    We live in… interesting times.

  • Mr0303

I wonder if this is a financial issue since Marvelous seems more than willing to publish the game. I’m also beginning to think there might be some SJWs at Sony that don’t allow that content to the West and act as gatekeepers.

  • Derek

They just rebuilt their rep with Yakuza 5 getting much higher scores than 4 and Dead Souls did. Even if they didnt you got to realize there are time constraints in Xseed. Lets wait and see, even if I dont plan on buying Bhikkhuni I wstill wish for otbers to be able to play.

  • Mea K

    This puzzles me.

The creator wants a localized release. The people that would be doing the localization say they want to do it. The Senran Kagura series has already been successfully localized despite the wailing cries of an outraged sex-negative media, so Marvelous clearly don’t care what the media has to say or what their reputation is with people that don’t buy their games anyway…

All things considered I don’t think this is another DOAX3. More likely a board of directors somewhere is currently unconvinced the game would sell in the west. That means is we need to start making more noise!

  • CrabCombat

As far as I can tell, Marvelous Europe (the publishers who said they want to release the game) just release games translated by XSEED (Marvelous USA) in the PAL regions. If they don’t have anyone to actually translate the game, they can’t do much.

  • DizzyGear

Even If they get their hand on it will prolly be digital only like Senran Kagura SV, Bona Petit, Rune Factory 4 and Lord of Magma.
In the least worst case it will be exclusive to their online store that charges a fortune for shipping.

  • Carl619

Senran Kagura 2 was possible to buy it from Amazon. We’ll have Amazon at least.

  • British_Otaku

Senran Kagura Burst and 2 became cheaply avaliable on Amazon and elsewhere pretty quickly. I’m sure Game even had a special edition for the former.

  • DizzyGear

Thats inside the UK though. Not even the gaming chain over here that also carries imports has copies of SK2.

  • British_Otaku

Keep forgetting that not all in Europe is in the UK. Wouldn’t Amazon.co.uk or GAME’s site still be pretty good though not that I can guess how poor supply is elsewhere.

  • DizzyGear

Amazon UK stopped being intresting for folks outside the UK when they killed off free super saving shipping outside the UK for some reason and i trust GAME about as far as i can throw them.
Than theres also the crappy exchange rate between the Pound and Euro with how weak the Euro is ATM.

  • British_Otaku

If a bit of a wait and a small cost are most of your issues with Amazon, they don’t seem that bad. I’ve been forced to buy from Amazon Germany myself and it is worth it for hard to find goods.

    GAME? No comment.

Exchange rates aren’t our friend indeed.

  • DizzyGear

My issue is that after the exchange rate the shipping costs from Amazon UK are about as or even higher than those of Videogames Plus. And their located in friggin Canada.
Funny enough ive also had packages from VG+ arrive sooner than those from Amazon UK even when they shipped around the same time.

  • landlock

There newest game Nitro Basterz is on Amazon UK as well. So there expanding these things take time.

  • awvnx

I believe Marvelous Europe has translated a game themselves. Can’t remember which though.

  • British_Otaku

I think they might be justified in their worrying about the sales a bit. I haven’t checked anime sales but it didn’t do as well as Shinovi Versus (which also released next to an anime).

We don’t necessarily have the same buying patterns as Japan but the hype is definitely slower.

Hope a bit of noise is enough and I’m glad to see someone else who thinks it is internal directors being cautious about money rather than Marvelous being shy when Estival Versus and other SK games are more lewd in some regards.

  • scemar

    Bullshit.
The localization cost would not outweight the sales cost, so it is profitable and they’ve brought much more niche games.

People need to stop underestimating how much a company fears the bad PR from the SJW journalist cabal and their witch hunt.

  • Mea K

Then explain to me why they just announced a new Senran Kagura localization complete with titillating box art even though when the last one came out the SJW media outlets shat themselves and published a large number of outraged articles (some of which going as far as calling for an outright ban).

I hate the press as much as the next guy, but these do not look like the actions of a company that’s afraid of bad PR from SJW journalists to me.

  • scemar

    Because they’re not a hivemind.
They might take some actions here and there that aren’t all part of the same line of thought what with many different branches or executive teams leading different projects that might start and end at different times, but it’s the trends over time that should tell you where they’re heading or what they’re up to.

For all we know they might carry on with SK but for whatever reason find Valkyrie Drive a different case.

But for games so low on text and properties they fully own there would not be that many costs associated with a localization, there’s no way the cost would outweight potential profits.

  • anon9370

The media isn’t sex negative. It’s het sex negative. So releasing this should be no problem. It’s lesbians, even Kotaku and Polygon can’t complain about it, in theory anyway.

  • Dark_Tzitzimine

I really hope that Marvelous Europe can pull it off and get this game localized

  • DizzyGear

Keep in mind this is the same Marvelous Europe who censored Senran Kagura SV by cutting out the dressing room subtitles for no reason at all since the EU ratings boards never even received a build from them with the subtitles in tact. This was *after* they said the EU version would be identical to the NA version.

I’d take everything they say with a pinch of salt.

  • Dark_Tzitzimine

And yet they did an absolute stellar work on SK2’s locallization and (unlike XSEED) haven’t failed to properly promote EV’s release. So they have more than earned my trust.

  • DizzyGear

Funny since it was the exact opposite for for SV. They announced the EU version very late, it was digital only and to add insult to injury: censored.
Keep in mind this was my first time dealing with Marvelous EU.
Didnt help they could not even be arsed to do a proper retail release of Rune Factory 4 after Xseed went out of their way to reverse engineer it so it could be released in Europe after Neverland went under.

  • CrabCombat

    “Could not even be arsed”

Or, you know, they’re a small company and they didn’t want to risk going out of business from a retail copy not selling well?

Games being digital-only pisses me off too, but if you seriously think there was no retail release because they “couldn’t be arsed” then you’re an idiot.

  • DizzyGear

That same old excuse. Its not my damn problem their a small company. If they cant handle it than let another publisher do the game justice with a retail release.
Besides this was Rune Factory 4 we are talking about and the 3DS’s region lock had yet to be cracked back than. The game would have sold.

  • CrabCombat

I just looked it up, apparently Marvelous Europe didn’t even have anything to do with the European release and XSEED were the ones who published it in Europe.

You’re complaining about the wrong people.

  • DizzyGear

They said they “helped” Xseed with the EU publishing. Whatever that means.

  • Dark_Tzitzimine

“it was the exact opposite for for SV. ”

And again, that is exactly why I have no issues whatsoever with them. Shame you had a bad first experience with them but is frankly absurd to keep holding that as a proof of their supposed incompetence when their more recent projects are the total opposite of that.

  • DizzyGear

You dont make a first impression twice.
Its gonna take more than some webstore exclusive tat to win back my trust.
They also got another strike against them from me when they released Lord of Magma digital only.
Besides we dont know yet if they censored EV like they did with SV.

  • Shay Bryder

What a damn shame, I was ready to dust off the Vita for this :(

  • EdgyDude

So an action game about weponized lesbians with big racks and plenty of jiggle is not coming west. Is anyone actually surprised? the shitstorm the feminazis would raise scares any publisher in Japan.

  • Eleven Fold

Westerns that like Japanese games have to deal with games not coming at all, censorship, and dialogue that have the latest and dankest memes. Thank Madoka the vita is not region locked. Maybe one day I will be able to play these games in their true form.

  • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

    Dreams shot down~. =/

  • Sentsuizan_93

Well, here’s hoping for favorable a change of heart soon at least. Who knows…

  • DizzyGear

You know what would be really instresting? If they’d just create an English patch for the Japanese version.

  • British_Otaku

That would be something, the menus have a lot of English and clear imagery already so it isn’t a SK2 Labyrinth.

Importers among us would be happy but it would be a lot of effort for folks who may just buy a second hand copy along with the patch for free. How would they guarantee a decent pay day for themselves?

You could import a second hand copy to avoid paying local releases in any case bit the language/region lock is normally a reason not to.

  • DizzyGear

It would make an intresting expiriment since the only Japanese game that i can think of that was dual language was Bravely default: for the sequal but that game was on a region locked console so the numbers for this game would be intresting with the Vita being region free.

But prehaps an “international edition” would be an better idea than a patch.

But yeah in any case they would have to make some deals with some online retailers like Play-Asia to promote the game outside Japan.

  • British_Otaku

I guess. Wasn’t Anarchy Reigns/Max Anarchy in Japan dual audio everywhere and super delayed outside Japan? Definitely region free on PS3

I can name a lot of games with multiple languages despite not being released in another region yet. All of them are basically the international version meaning that other regions will get the same game very soon.

I highly doubt that outside of very specific cases when you don’t know how long till the game gets localised that people would buy in notable numbers. Maybe it would only be a few thousand people too.

Anarchy Reigns sold 22K first week on PS3 anyway. Take that as you will.

  • DizzyGear

I only heard Sega was sitting on a localised version and not releasing it for some reason. No idea if the Japanese version had an English option.

Than again i had never heard of Anarchy Reigns right until it was released.

What other Japanese games have full blown English language options that have yet to be released outside Japan?

  • British_Otaku

The Legend of the Dark Witch 2 – It has English and Chinese along with Japanese. English is rough though.

Gyakuten Saiyan 1 – 3 on DS: They are pre-final translations but optional regardless.

Ace Attorney Trilogy on 3DS: The same as above but Japanese was actually an option for the localisation as well.

Pokemon X/Y: Simultaneous release in all regions, so it has options.

Resident Evil Revelations: Even the Japanese demo has multi-5 support.

Yeah, I know a lot of 3DS examples since that is what I play. A trend that I see is that games which have multiple languages despite not leaving Japan (yet) are simply making one version of the game which has a different set language in other regions. Rather than cutting things out, it also means that the localisation must be an early or cancelled plan.

Same probably goes for this. English Trophies probably mean that unlike that Takaki vocaloid thing that they want it to leave Japan.

  • DizzyGear

While intresting its kinda useless on a region locked console.
I would not look too much into the Trophy’s. Yoru no nai Kuni on Vita had the throphy’s in Engrish even before they announced it as Nights of Azure but whats the point of translating them in Engrish with the wrong name in advance.
I doubt the English and Japanese versions are even gonna share the trophy set since the Japanese set has the PS4/PS3/Vita labels and the west will only get the PS4 version because lol Tecmo Koei.

  • British_Otaku

Not if you are someone with a Japanese 3DS looking for games with furigana to help you learn Japanese: http://www.gaijingamers.com/showthread.php?t=5299

It obviously isn’t as useful as it would be if the system was region free but yeah.

Trophies have also accidently hinted to Vita versions for games which weren’t going to be made too. That was a rare spasm of enthusiasm from me, but I still think that writing all of the trophies in English or getting English names for merchandise is a strong implication of the goal of localisation or planning it.

  • DizzyGear

I personally prefer grabbing some raws of Shounen manga like One Piece or something off Nyaa that have official translations for comparing. lol

  • British_Otaku

Why not both? I’m doing them all. Interviews, manga, novels, games etc. I even buy all of them because I’m crazy.

  • におに

That’s fine. Don’t release it in the west. Release it in South East Asia with an English language option. This should be how all of these Japanese games operate from now on, to subvert Western content ratings and outrage culture.

    Translation, not localization.

  • Fear Me I Am Free

Yeah, then we can buy it from Play-Asia.

  • DizzyGear

Rather not. its a pain in the ass with DLC and patches.
For example the Asian version of Moero Chronicles completely missed out on a patch the Japanese version had.

  • におに

I’m unfamiliar with this, but this seems like more a problem that they just need to support it better then. I stand by it conceptually.

  • awvnx

The Asian version of Moero didn’t need to be patched since it already included the latest Japanese patch. That’s why you have the feature to reset levels which was only added later. This is common for localizations, because you get the game like a year later and it’s already patched.

Anyway, DLC is definitely region locked but patches are not. You can import a Japanese physical game on a NA Vita and still get the latest patch automatically, but DLC is a huge hassle which involves switching accounts. That’s never going to change since it’s Sony making that decision.

  • DizzyGear

I thought he Japanese version also received a feature later on that lets you see if there are panty gathering nodes on the map.

  • awvnx

    I haven’t heard about that.

  • BaronKrause

Well, once all the games I care about are Asian releases, having to switch becomes a non issue as ill have no reason to go back to my US memory card 😛

  • bateruchan

Is there a way to find out EASILY about East Asian (English) games? Like when they come on the market? This would make things very easy for me… I don’t mind importing, but I don’t know Japanese and that would take 5 years… 5 years of not helping sales, not buying the games…

And that’s a minimum of 5 years if I go hard.

  • British_Otaku

I spotted a good list on a forum for DS and 3DS games (it mentions others too) though it is only a starting point: http://www.gaijingamers.com/showthread.php?t=5299

I might start a list myself for all kinds of games since information seems to be pretty hard to come by.

  • Bon Babab

Purely translated stuff is bottom of the barrel fansub stuff.

  • におに

I don’t care about what people call that “flavor” bullshit. I just want to know what’s being said.

  • Bon Babab

Leaving in Japanese jokes, honorifics and what have you is highly unprofessional and is pure non-sensical to leave in.

  • British_Otaku

It really depends. I’ve watched English dubs for anime that recognised how they can enhance the performance or jokes in places. With text, you have a lot more freedom to maintain those types of things and even provide translation notes (not so much for a game but still possible).

  • Fear Me I Am Free

This has to be due to SJW interference. If it wasn’t a game with sexual themes, then I could see maybe just wanting to keep it exclusive, but the timing and content are too much of coincidence.

  • British_Otaku

Don’t think so. Are they looming perhaps some even pleased that this won’t be coming potentially? Maybe.

This is still Marvelous who have bought over SK Burst, SV, 2, Bon Appetit and EV worldwide. They also had a part I assume in approving Seven Seas and FUNimation to bring over the manga and anime respectively.

They wouldn’t be spooked by that sort of influence.

  • Carl619

In Spain I read some people that this was an awful game just for tits. I’m sure that they’ll be happy to hear that Valkyrie won’t come.

  • British_Otaku

Well with billions of people on the planet, I can’t say I didn’t expect a few people in Spain on the Internet to say that.

  • Carl619

As I am from Spain,I know them better XD. But at least they are more worried about more mainstream games than this one. They usually leave these niche games with maybe a comment about Japan and that they are perverts.

  • British_Otaku

As a Brit, we’ll be sure to send some of us over the holidays so those prudes get to see some shameless people.

Anyway, if it isn’t a lot of press pushing against it or legal restrictions, it isn’t really worth thinking about. At most share your opinion.

  • ivanchu77

I´m from Spain, and i definetly want this game to be localized, i know several more people here in spanish forums that think like that….(meristation for example)

  • Carl619

  • Fear Me I Am Free

    Things can change.

  • Grey

I’d probably never buy it or play it even if it were offered to me freely, but I also think it should get a release for those who would. As there are probably many who would, either for the happy boobs or even just because they think the game looks fun, it’s not a lack of demand keeping it from a western release.

Congratulations to the gaming media for having made the western market appear so hostile to sexuality, sensuality, cheeky naughtiness, and fun in general that Asian developers are now not merely allowing their works to be censored, but flat out choose not to release them to our market at all.

  • DizzyGear

I guess this will also mean we’ll never get that Kenka Bancho like game their working on.

  • British_Otaku

Not sure about that. Both are Vita games but Uppers has a different market which may end up being less niche. We also don’t know how their marketing is planned to go.

If they have an anime which FUNimation simulcast/dubbed, that would be a great headstart even better than having multiple manga around.

  • boag

“Were not taking your games away you cis scum misoginerds!”

  • Michael Richardson

Alright, people, repost this on other websites. Talk about it on social media. Email marvelous games and express your interest. Create petitions. Etc. We might get this if we show there’s interest in the West for this game.

  • British_Otaku

Yep. I won’t forgive anyone here if they don’t at least try firing up a Marvelous Europe or Xseed account to talk about this there once in a while.

    I’m guilty myself…

  • DizzyGear

I heard if you can summon Tom if you say wyrdwad 3 times in a row.

  • awvnx

Either XSEED is busy with translating other games like Cold Steel II (and possibly other Kiseki entries), or XSEED wants to shed its fanservice game image aside from future Senran Kagura entries which they’re obligated to finish. Or a combination of the two. Personally I don’t mind sacrificing a fanservice game for Zero/Ao no Kiseki, but that still seems like a poor business decision.

  • Para-Medic

Yeah I’m not inclined to believe this. I wouldn’t take their “no comment” as a nod to future business decisions.

They just got done releasing TiTS SC and Sen No Kiseki. They’ve got 3 PC ports lined up for early 2016. Estival Versus in March, and Nitro+ blasters at the end of Jan… This year JUST started… If I had to take a guess, I’d say it’s more likely that they are negotiating licensing rights for more games atm.

You know I’m probably missing some titles… Have a hard time keeping up with all the new releases between PC and my handhelds (3DS and Vita.)

  • DizzyGear

They better be working on Tokyo Xanadu as well.

  • Dom Fass

Translate it via Asian like DOA XBVB3 and I will import it. Even if it’s stuck in jp I’ll probably import it anyway and stumble across the game one way or another

I REALLY want this. Please come over. Don’t want to have to import :<

  • British_Otaku

Apparently this is one of the worse Marvelous lewd games on Vita or 3DS, thanks to Meteorise being inexperienced methinks: youtube.com/watch?v=FxKdTF14GDU

Regardless, I’d hate for an audience to not have the chance to play a localised game they might like. Here is hoping that some sort of localisation happens, I’m expecting both Europe and America to get digital treatment.

Valkyria Drive had a big multimedia push from the start but it doesn’t seem as good.

  • DizzyGear

Something look really off with the combat animations. Its like they lack the impression of power behind them.

  • British_Otaku

Meteorise seem to be reusing the engine and some animations from SK (jarring and lazy in some cases) but don’t seem to have the chops that Tamsoft have.

The former doesn’t have much action experience (they also dis Bon Appetit) and Tamsoft well…

They took cheap pervy action games to become pretty competent even if you won’t mistake them for PlatinumGames. Tamsoft are flawed.

T_T I always knew Oneechanbara had potential! Thank you for showing me this!

  • British_Otaku

No problem. I wanted to try the series since the Wii since it could use some great action games and I can see that even if it wasn’t amazing then, it might be now.

Tamsoft really need encouragement to push their niche of lewd technical action games. I don’t want to see the next SK or Onechanbara slack.

  • Siveon

I have no idea what that guy is saying. That accent is so thick I could spread it on some dude’s bread.

  • Carl619

I saw a part of this video and was saying that it has empty scenarios and the enemies aren’t aggresive except the bosses that are a little more.

Is there a japanese review that can give us more information about the game?

  • British_Otaku

You could always ask him more questions, I went back and forth with him myself and watched his first hour playthrough too.

What info are you looking for?

  • Carl619

A part from the video I am looking for more point of view of the same game and because I understand better if it is written.

In the video I saw that he lost in a duel but in others ones he easily won, I think that I didn’t understand what he was saying because that specific duel seemed different. And how many different enemies we have in the game.

  • British_Otaku

It would help if you gave me a time specifically to check out but briefing things from memory.

The girl who has a bow has an super easy time against bosses since they are mostly short range. Platforming and camera management aren’t well handled even by SK standards.

The harder boss encounters near the end of the game demand use of advanced mechanics but end up feeling more annoying since so little of the game encourages it and you don’t get a chance to build up the drive gauge in those fights. So basically you have next to no energy and it is a massive difficulty spike from prior fights being mundane.

    I think that covers things.

  • Carl619

Ok, thanks. I was talking about the fight around minute 10.

  • British_Otaku

I assume Mana/bow girl doesn’t play a part in most of the fights since her bow made things easy.

Unlike other bosses, the final three missions don’t have a level before where you can build up energy to power up or do special moves. They actually hurt and have quick movement/range too.

These are fights where the boss can pull out their final drive with 75% HP and one shot you (he inferred that). It demands skills that the game didn’t encourage you to develop and ends up being best played if dodge to raise your gauge and use that to win. They also don’t flinch or take knock back from your attacks.

That should be it. One bit I didn’t understand so I’ll ask.

  • British_Otaku

He loves it when people guess where his accent is from SK feel free to ask between asking for clarification on anything.

If not, I could translate I guess. I’ve watched him for years.

  • Siveon

Feel free to do so. At least for the first 30 seconds or so.

  • British_Otaku

Just the beginning? If you don’t mind an answer two days late… This is about 1 minute and 40 seconds.

    “Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.

I am Briareos Kerensky and welcome to the review of Valkyrie Drive Bhikkhuni. Valkyrie Drive is a Multi-Platform (he means Multi-Media!) effort by Kenichiro Takaki, the same guy that brought us Senran Kagura.

There is Mermaid, an anime series, Siren, a mobile game, and Bhikkhuni, this Vita game.

The development has shifted from Tamsoft to Meteorise, the same studio behind Dekamori Senran Kagura or Senran Kagura Bon Appetit in the west. The version I’m reviewing here is 1.01. I’m stating this because upon release Valkyria Drive featured a lot of bugs and balancing problems with its 1.7GB patch 1.01 brought a completely revised menu interface, new splash screens with voice-overs, rebalanced difficulty modes, new requirements to unlock survival battles and challenges, corrected graphical bugs and revamped the combat interface that now shows health on locked on enemies (much like Devil May Cry 3, 4 and DmC), button hints and made some standard attacks and all drives look flashier. The list is quite long and there is the chance that future updates will bring even more changes though I strongly doubt they will change how the game is played.”

Don’t know if that helps much but stopping at 30 seconds didn’t seem like it would say much. Try to watch the rest if you have the time anyway.

  • awvnx

To the contrary, I think the character models and are more detailed than SK

  • British_Otaku

I don’t pay much attention to the Vita games to judge but SK2 still seems to top the production values (cutscenes, scrolls, enemy designs) even it it was misjudged in many ways.

I come to SK for mechanics and would like to see more platforming and exploration like VD but VD doesn’t seem to have ironed them out (perhaps another patch will solve things).

  • Dark_Tzitzimine

I have the game and I can say that is false. Bhikkhuni is a fantastic action gane on its own right and way more deep than any SK game to date.

  • British_Otaku

I’d like to see discussion or a video proving that then, not demanding anything now but SK2 is pretty fast: youtube.com/watch?v=CmJZNG2he-Q

It also has a lot of enemy types to reward and encourage learning or using items to upgrade yourself.

  • Dark_Tzitzimine

That review you linked isnt a particularly good one. It doesnt talk AT ALL about the Phantom Drive mechanic, and that is the core of its gameplay. The reviewer also fails to mention the launcher attacks or the multiple ways to use the phantom drive to deal with enemies.
This is real odd because the game spends the first ten missions with tutorials about its mechanics. The guy also got wrong the way secret missions and collectibles work, failed to mention that the game has two endings or the fact support characters influence your character’s stats

  • British_Otaku

Detail Phantom Drive if you don’t mind (might have seen it in his one hour playthrough but don’t remember). I don’t doubt that he may not have masters something he reviewed, he didn’t master Senran Kagura 2 but shared relevant and accurate concerns.

If you have insight which reflects that this game is better than we think, it wouldn’t hurt to know. I don’t think him not mentioning two endings or support characters buffing stats means much though.

Multiple endings are cool, but you could infer what support characters do without him saying it or showing a single drive.

  • Dark_Tzitzimine

The phantom drive is somewhat of a mix between SK’s chain kunai and the aerial rave. You use it to move fast between enemies and in airborne enemies enables different attacks that are timing sensitive. The idea is to launch enemies and the pummeling them by mixing your inputs between, weak attack, launcher, drive and strong attack.
With proper timing you can move flawlessly between enemies, otherwise you will drop your combo and lose the flow of the battle.
The phantom drive also enables you to retaliate if you’re knocked down and to evade attacks normally unavoidable.
The evade is crucial against bosses and mobs since not only builts your meter, it also lets you positionate to use the phantom drive.

Characters also have well defined weight, range and techs. Just to name one example, Ranka is somewhat slow but she has multihit attacks and she can charge most of her attacks to deal more damage.

The support character perks rely on both their drive level and affection with you character. Some of them offer well balanced stats increases while others lean toward one stat in particular. the maid triplies your attack but reduce your defense to 0 for example

  • British_Otaku

Hmm, enemies (mobs and bosses short of the last three encounters) still seem to be mostly dull fodder and the combat potential doesn’t seem high even in comparison to Senran Kagura games. I can’t disagree that it is a more accurate way to play the game, but if a game doesn’t provide encounters which encourage use of those mechanics, it is ultimately kind of hollow.

Phantom Drive seems interesting, but not “that” interesting. Anyway, it is nice to see better gameplay and a good low dash from the ground.

Compare your second video to what would happen during a Orochi boss fight in Senran Kagura 2. That boss doesn’t work with armour but has movement which is more dynamic (he can actually REACH YOU at head height!) and rewards you for bouncing of him or kunai chasing him.

  • Dark_Tzitzimine

The difference here is that in the second video the player is not only exploting the boss’ AI to lock it in place but is also going explicitely after the achievement for destroying every core within the boss.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guMe7gL6DhU

Also the enemies used on those videos (and in the review you linked previously) are from the first levels where enemies are used mainly to familiarize the player with the game mechanics. In that sense they’re no different to the fooder on the Versus’ games.

  • British_Otaku

You shouldn’t be able to lock the AI for a massive boss into place at all, especially on the 1.01 ver patch. That’s my thoughts, it makes for a boring video if I mainly see characters having to dodge one type of attack (which anyone could outrun) – the character does it for style and especially if I know how little damage most enemies seem to do.

I don’t actually play or particularly like what I see of the SV/EV games (mechanics, characters, enemy variety) doesn’t mean much, I’m mostly drawing comparisons with the 3DS.

Perhaps a good video to show me would be the final boss encounters. Spoilers be damned because people get hyped over seeing Dante dominate Vergil or a room of enemies who actually want you dead, nothing less. I’m not surprised that the videos I’ve seen so far have mostly been from the early stages, there isn’t a point in spoiling the whole range if the difficulty or enemy encounters don’t add to the video. He was inferring that enemies don’t put up a fight for the most part and that’s the same thing you did with your chosen videos.

On that note, the video you just shared showed that the boss did very little damage when it hit and never showed it using a long range attack (though it does skip much of the fight). Orochi is the best boss in SK2 by a mile, but even others have projectile weapons or can dominate the space. When I use Mana if I play this game, I could see shooting from across the stage (ala most DMC2 encounters) being viable.

I’m not saying this game is bad, you’ve convinced me that this game has more potential than I first concluded, but it still doesn’t even start to make much use of that potential. Senran Kagura 2 has the problem of lacking the polish and stages to make full use of the potential it has, but is further along than this.

Oh and the achievement makes that battle tedious, not difficult or interesting. I hope other achievements benefit the experience. I personally don’t like trophies in general, so don’t bother looking that up. If they had an unlock for doing that task, it would be better but not by much if the game gives you high grades without doing much.

  • Dark_Tzitzimine

Players exploiting the AI is nothing new and even that requires a considerable amount of skill to adequately pull off (the timing to do most of the stuff on the video is pretty strict) There aren’t a lot of videos about the game in YT but these ones should give you a better idea

This video is from the same guy who made the Rinka exhibition and should be proof enough of every character being distinct.

  • MGNoxa

I really want this to release in Europe! Fans will be angry at censorship but if this is a case of them not being able to release it because it’s too graphic then tone it down, I don’t care. If it’s the only way to release it by adding smoke or something then do it.

  • British_Otaku

It isn’t really more extreme than anything in any of the Senran Kagura series though. It makes no sense to tolerate cuts about content which they have released multiple times this generation.

  • MGNoxa

I’m just saying if this is an age rating issue. If they are worried about M or 18 I don’t want them to censor but if this is a “We don’t want to censor the game but it won’t classify uncensored.” then I’m fine with them doing something to it to get it released.

  • British_Otaku

Fair enough, at this point it seems too soon for them to be contacting rating systems and the content seems in line or behind SK games which have been rated T (basically 12+), 16+ and M consistently.

Oneechanbara Z2 was rated 16 in Europe too.

My answer would be to keep the game in Japan till they can get it on Steam anyway. I don’t want to support a cut game and don’t feel the market benefits from cut versions roaming around.

  • MGNoxa

I’ll take a cut game if that’s the only way. Senran Kagura is a 16 and it’s almost unchanged, problem is Valkyrie Drive is lesbians and well you know how people over react to lesbian/gay stuff. Game is probably comparable to SK but if you throw in lesbians might raise it to an AO in America.

  • British_Otaku

Senran Kagura is unchanged unless you know something I don’t. >_> I don’t consider ages being hidden to be notable.

There are hints to potential lesbian relationships in probably every Senran Kagura even without counting Yagyu and Hibari. The actual lewd factor seems behind some of the recent SK games too.

Any examples of AO games rated that for having lesbian characters? None of the Marvelous games are H games so they should all be far away from that category.

  • DizzyGear

There was this shitstorm in a teacup about Cartoon Network cutting 3 seconds of footage out of a cartoon with 2 dancing woman what *could* be interpreted as lesbian romance.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/KotakuInAction/comments/3zriye/drama_polygon_tweet_complaining_about_cartoon/

  • British_Otaku

That is a TV airing on Cartoon Network. They cut tons of things here if you ever feel like checking out what we got instead of Adventure Time. A decent show but not one I’ll watch cut.

Video games seem to get away with nunchuks in the UK, buy TMNT and Bruce Lee didn’t for a long time.

Compare the same mediums to each other.

  • DizzyGear

It just popped in my mind since it was something recent…
How about this than. While not rated AO the LoveLive! mobile game had the dialogue scrubbed of lesbian themes.
They did patch it back in though.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cDKnKjAmwo

  • British_Otaku

Oh that is a game and I remember the video. And I don’t want to be the guy to say “Lol mobile games aren’t real games”.

Hmm, I guess this counts. On the condition that it was probably a (cowardly) publisher who wanted to reach an audience without drama, much like how seeing Zangief slam people with split legs into the ground is fine but not R. Mika.

Fortunately games targeted at adults avoid this… Usually.

  • MGNoxa

I’m just thinking how graphic the lesbian stuff gets. Remember Mass Effect? The first one was rated a 12 but then people complained about the lesbian scene and it got shot up to a 15 or 18.

Also there’s some lines of dialogue in SK in the EU that haven’t been given subtitles because what the character says would make it unable to be classified. I’m ok with that censorship because I would be furious if it was a few little lines of dialogue causing the game not to release.

Basically, if a game is censored because of “offensive portrayals” of something then that’s bad, if it’s censored to make it a lower age rating then it’s bad and if it’s censored due to cultural differences then that’s bad. The only time I’m accepting of censorship is if something is in the game that is stopping it from being released, like those lines of dialogue in Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus.

  • DizzyGear

like those lines of dialogue in Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus.

Except that was never the case. Someone emailed the USK and they claimed they never received a build with dressing room subtitles in tact.
In other words Marvelous EU lied and self censored.

  • MGNoxa

Really? I can remember reading somewhere that they removed the lines because the game couldn’t be classified with those lines in the game.

  • British_Otaku

Are you sure that wasn’t the male homosexual content instead? Or leering camera angles? Or that a rating system being out of whack means much?

Ace Attorney 5 was rated M.

I heard about SV but some comments below implied that it was incompetence rather than a deliberate cut. Again, all of the other SK content was spared.

I’ll have to dig to know whether it was really necessary to avoid making it since I haven’t actually heard of PEGI refusing games. Ever.

  • MGNoxa

Usually when a game gets censored in Europe it’s Germany’s fault…

  • British_Otaku

… You probably aren’t wrong though I’ve never ran any statistics. Germany is a minefield but publishers can still make uncensored versions for the rest of Europe.

In practice, it is reusing assets from the NA or JP release in many cases but keeping the languages.

  • MGNoxa

I think Marvelous Games just brings over the NA version of the games, based on their twitter it looks like Marvelous Games might be considering localising Valkyrie Drive themselves but it’s too early to talk about. I hope this is the case for us fans over here but I would love to know what’s stopping this game.

  • British_Otaku

I get that impression too, they did release copies in other parts of Europe but I never got the impression that they did unique subtitles or Multi 5.

A good sign that they don’t have the resources to attempt it and/or have doubts that they would earn that much more sales.

It is a 100% sign that the games are fine to be released in Europe in general. The UK is fine but Sweden is strange. I actually did some reading into why DOA:D had trouble and it never had a official push against it. Police said it was fine, but stores were perhaps responding to a manga translator with concerning images of manga getting in their news.

I don’t remember whether Sweden got SK or any recent DOA games.

  • MGNoxa

I think DOA:D had a lot of trouble in Australia, I think was given a PG but removed for the same reason it had trouble in Sweden.

  • Derp Minos

The funny part is it was proven a few years ago that the images the translator had were legal in Sweden.

  • British_Otaku

That’s the sad part. Since media is still scared of approaching that subject material including in Sweden despite it being stated to be legal.

  • DizzyGear

Germany’s USK is only strict when it comes to violence and anything World War 2.

  • MGNoxa

How lenient is USK on sexual content in games? I know they are quite strict on violence and nazi stuff is illegal in Germany so it’s no wonder that they’re strict on WW2 stuff.

  • bateruchan

I have friends in Germany and many of them have noted that Germany is not too friendly with LGBT at all… sexual content is not seen in a very good light there in general, but LGBT is worse. I know from a bit of research that, for example, in Germany, they still use the archaic “Real-Life Experiment” as a gateway to getting hormones if you are trans… and even then you can still be denied because you didn’t “try hard enough”. The LGB part is still looked down on and my bisexual friend gets shit about 10-15% of the time he’s in public with his boyfriend, unlike the USA, where that is ~<1% of the time.

So yes, Germany is very prudish from what I hear. I have no idea why. They may have had a female chancellor, but as far as LGBT and sexuality goes there, it seems like it's nearly as backwards as 1980s USA.

  • MGNoxa

    Ouch… Sorry about your friend.

If the SK games sell well then Germany could probably be a big hurdle for Valkyrie Drive.

  • Derek

They dont want the bashing from reviews. They want the same equality reviewers give in Japan vs the ideological bashing reviewers lace in their scathing review. A lot of Japanese games from IF lost points vrcause the reviewer disliked non gameplay mechanics

Censorship is least of the problems. Its the reviewers refusing to put aside their ideals for the review in an faux attempt at intellectual enlightenment

  • MGNoxa

The game has such a niche audience that reviews don’t matter unless it was going to get 9s and 10s. Just don’t send out review copies, advertise the game and I’m sure there’s many YouTubers out there that would do one or two videos on it.

  • Derek

But does it need 3s and 4s just because the reviewer hated certain non gameplay details?

  • MGNoxa

Not at all but how many sites will buy the game just to give it a negative score? This isn’t a big franchise so it’s not like buying Dead or Alive so they can complain about the female characters and give it a low score.

I think a lot of devs/pubs are scared of reviews when they shouldn’t be. Some games need the good reviews but others don’t because their audience will buy them no matter the score.

  • Derek

Professional reviews which consist of the loudest voices a dev will hear first. I am sure you will be happy if you are a writer and someone reviews your book and directly calls you a sexist pig

  • MGNoxa

I know Shuhei Yoshida is concerned with western reviews being harsher on Japanese games for certain content but I don’t understand why this would be something that would put off publishers from releasing a very small game with a really small audience.

Yeah the negative reviews mean the sales won’t be massive but there’s a good chance positive reviews won’t change a thing because the game only appeals to a small audience.

It’s annoying that right now certain games are being reviewed unfairly but at the same time the negative reviews aren’t going to affect the sales of some of them.

  • Derek

It is a mindset that is developed over the last five years. As localizatiin of staple games dwindled from big publishers who made the decision to go mobile. CH and NISA were the only ones still localizing games for us and they struck a nerve with the big journalist devs who didnt like what they saw. Japanese devs saw this as a growing hostility from the press and was working behind language and cultural barriers so didnt know what was going on.

So we see STTP trying to salvage Japan’s reputation. It has worked so far since the usual naysayers shut their mouths about their usual complaints. Last I have seen Y5 got way better ratings.

A similar example is jpop and AKB48. People working for the press uses AKB48 as an outstanding example of what is wrong with the Japanese music biz.

  • MGNoxa

No idea what STTP is, I just googled STTP Japan… I got Hentai.

  • Derek

Sony Third Party Production. Mind the typo

  • MGNoxa

Your typo made me google hentai… Anyway, what as STPP done to salvage Japans reputation? It’s awesome that Y5 had better reviews but what did STPP actually do?

  • Derek

Help bring games over that would fix Japan’s reputation in gaming by improving the quality of the Third Party Library. Remember as much as Niche loves the Vita, the library isnt healthy in the eyes of executives. This was a big problem during the jrpg droughts during 2011-2014

  • Antoinant

“I don’t care if they censor it as long as I get the game in english”
Faggots like you are one of the reasons why vidya is going to the ground

  • MGNoxa

Dude don’t overreact. I just simply said that if this is an age rating thing then I would gladly have them censor it if it means it will release.

Choice A – I get no game because I won’t let them censor it which means the game will never be released because it will be unclassified or AO.

Choice B – I let them know that if this is the only way to get the game then I’m happy if they have to put a bit of smoke or mist in places.

I don’t want the game to be censored if it doesn’t have to be censored. I probably hate censorship way more than you, I’m not buying Street Fighter V because of what they’ve done to that game, so I suggest you calm down before you make yourself look like a fool.

  • Antoinant

Choice A – Learn moonrunes and import the game. Also make everything better (more deals, game library expanded) as a consumer.
    Problem solved.

  • MGNoxa

That doesn’t solve the problem of the game not being localised.

  • Antoinant

    Except it does.
You’re just trying however to make apology for shitty practises in localizations.

  • MGNoxa

How so? If the game can’t be released because localisation won’t censor the game then how does that help anyone? I’m not saying they should censor the game I’m just saying if this is an age rating thing then I’m ok with it being censored. For all we know it’s one little scene that could be causing it and a little bit well placed smoke makes it an 18 rated game. Problem solved.

If this isn’t age rating they shouldn’t censor it.

No longer needing to rely on localisations still doesn’t solve this problem.

  • bateruchan

That is a 5+ year process to learn that. By then, who knows where the industry will be? By then, the SJW watchdog shit might even be gone and all that effort would be mostly worthless.

It doesn’t solve the here-and-now even if you want to learn it, anyway. I hate this suggestion, because it implies a language can be learnt in a year or less, or something. That is just not true.

  • Antoinant

    “5+ years process”
I managed to learn most of the language in 6 months (I left out the extra-modest and humble expressions yet and I still need to practise loan words in katakana because I’m not a native english speaker). Pretty sure you can do this in one year if you’re actually as serious.
“By then, the SJW watchdog shit might be gone”
You’re going for a wild ride if you believe social justice is going away anytime soon, thanks to the rampant feminism and political-correctness degrading western societies.

  • Joey

This guy overreacts a lot. It’s best to ignore him.

  • Antoinant

    “overreacts a lot”
Funny thing is to hear that from people who literally advocate for censorship or justify whatever practise a localization team does the moment a game will be released in english

  • MusouTensei

No, I’m not going to give Money to the Publisher if they censor it, and I don’t think it would be needed to be censored for the EU market anyway, worse case would be 18+ Rating (possibly 16+ in my Country since Senran Kagura 2 is 12+ here) and a ban in sweden, but who cares about sweden?

  • MGNoxa

I agree if the game is an 18 don’t censor it.

  • https://twitter.com/solidsalamander SolidSalamander

This is sad to hear, but

    Calling it again.
It’s the dark ages of videogames, either games get censored, not made, or not brought over.

Getting mixed signals here. A broken English tweet that could mean almost anything, while Marvelous themselves are tweeting multiple times that they are willing to release it.

I think it’s too early to jump the gun here and assume anything is set in stone.

  • DizzyGear

Marvelous EU is a completely seperate entity from Marvelous Japan.

  • Ultim8_Alchemist

To answer the your question, yes I would like to get a worldwide release with our own LE/CE items like what Marvelous Europe have been doing. Failing this, an Asian release with English subtitles will be just as good.
Takaki, if you are reading this, PLEASE don’t forsake your western audience. I know it is just speculation at this stage, but I don’t buy the business decision argument, especially as Marvelous EU are willing to bring it over, and they know their market better than anyone else…

  • http://thewiredfishnetwork.com/ Steven T.

Hmm, I don’t know. His tweet sounds pretty broken. He probably meant to say “Unfortunately we only have it out in Japan. I would like to release it though,” probably hinting that they (probably XSEED) are pretty busy at the moment. I remember this being the same situation when Senran Kagura hadn’t made its debut yet. Enough fan demand arose over time, and eventually we got SK Burst.

But say they are gauging interest yet fearing they need to censor the game. Now assuming the worst, this could be the perfect chance to try one of a few things out.

    1) Release two versions of the game: a tamer M rated version, and the uncut AO version.
    2) Go all uncut and let the game get an AO rating and stick with it.
    3) Probably wait for a PC release and release it Uncut either on their own storefront or Steam (Hatred set something of a precedent for officially rated AO games on Steam, even if it is on the violence spectrum of content).

I mainly bring up the AO rating thing due to the ESRB’s track record as of late (I have a feeling “certain” kinds of people are running it now). This would be the perfect opportunity for gaming public to really lobby Sony to allow AO rated games. Keep in mind that Sony had begun letting CERO Z games (their equivalent to our AO rating) get released on their platforms in Japan some years ago. Even though Yoshida (I think it was him) said that thing about Dragon’s Crown’s negative reception (from one publication mind you), I think we can convince him to open the gates.

I’ll go ahead and shill my own article again on AO rated games and how this could work.

  • chaoguy

Contact them. Seriously, Japan is more open to critisism than we realize. Tell them what’s going on, and ask for (at least) Asia-English or english menus/subs options.

  • EroBotan

i did so in their twitter, hope they change their mind https://twitter.com/kenichiro_taka/status/686451439472791552

  • scemar

    This is some smart stuff.
It’s some next gen tactics we gotta adopt if we want to keep our games.

  • TsukuyomiMagi99

This is ingenious. If we did this we wouldn’t ever have to worry about the Social Justice Wankers ever again. And it’ll get our message o7t loud and clear.

  • Zanard Bell

I want to release, too, but apparently this series is not coming to the west.

  • Fenrir7

Good thing I imported this. But I’d still like to see it localized so I can understand the story.

  • Kiryu

    Same here.

  • Joel Leonheart

Hnmm…Well damn I hope they come around & release it here if possible (-_-)

  • deadeye

I see we’re already playing the “let’s throw baseless accusations at SJWs” game.

Isn’t it based on an anime? Could there be licensing issues? Plenty of games don’t get localized for different reasons. SJWs are not at the top of the list.

  • Neojames82

We would like to think that is the reason…but with the present climate; DOAX3 not coming out here and IF saying they won’t release games here anymore, it is kinda easy to jump to this conclusion.

  • deadeye

IF didn’t say that, they just said they’re not gonna release games if they have to censor them.

It’s still jumping to conclusions. Isn’t the game based on an anime? Couldn’t licensing issues be a problem? Or do I have that backwards, and the anime is based on the game?

  • BattlerArisato

As far as I know, the anime is based on the game, the anime is just a way to promote it, but I could be wrong.

  • Carl619

You are right, there is a anime, a mobile game and this game, it is a franchise that launched these three in the same year. They have different plots and maybe in a dlc the anime girls come to the game.

The franchise is property of marvelous, I don’t think there is a problem with it, and the author said that they wanted to launch it to Western.

  • Derek

Most of IF games have enough fanservice to raise concern.

  • bateruchan

I really hope that IF’s words mean that they want to step back and take translation very seriously without being hampered down by petty localisation things.

    I REALLY do.
I love Idea Factory games, and maybe that’s because I’m a weeaboo… I mean I’m playing Omega Quintet right now between typing this, but they seem like a pretty comfy company.

And after people blew their lid over Monster Monpiece… I kind of think IF’s problem isn’t so much with SJW shit (I never see it on their Facebook at least… keep in mind SJW aren’t gamers so they literally only ever normally see AAA titles), I think their problem is more with their niche fanbase who will bitch them out over minor mistakes. It must be VERY tiring to IFI to deal with that onslaught of shit… they bring us niche games we would never see otherwise, then get shit on when they feel they need to censor loli and other types of questionable content.

It is a damned if you do censor (fans) and damned if you don’t (SJW/ratings board) situation that must make them feel like they’re between a rock and a brick wall at times. I was honestly really upset over their announcement, but I hope it means a positive change (less localisation, more translation) rather than a necessarily negative one.

  • Derek

The reviewers have a part to play in this, they bear so much abuse from reviewers who would dock points for things they don’t want to see that they just gave in. Forget rating boards, just putting up with reviewers who think your game is unplayable because of certain types of characters is as bad as it gets. Remember, Jim Cuckling gave SK2 a 3/10

  • bateruchan

I think that reviewers matter less than your own fanbase trying to destroy you for making a mistake or censoring things due to having a better knowledge of the ratings board than to think lewd lolis will pass with an M.

At least, that’s how I feel. I don’t know about others. Maybe you’re right, but to me, I’d care less about Jimmy-boy and more about my own forums blow up from previous buyers bitching and whining about things.

  • Derek

The problem is Execs in Japan only gauge the opinion of professional reviews and hard numbers. And by Professional reviews I don’t mean some no name site that don’t have official ad revenue or a press pass who praises your game. I mean sites like Famitsu, IGN and Gamespot. They haven’t been giving IF the kind of reviews they want to see. Just a bunch of nasty comments about them while providing fluffy coverage of activists in the gaming media. I apologize but Niche has not gotten the notice of the niche devs yet to have private interviews that doesn’t require them to speak through PR Filtered Microphones.

  • Vampok

    Agreed, we really don’t know anything yet, and there’s a bunch of other plausible reasons;
There could be voice actors or music licensing problems (assuming the anime and game share some of them)
The tweet itself is vague and in broken English, and he could just mean that he wants to release it in the West but right now it’s just Japan.
IRC Marvelous said they want to move away from just doing fanservice games, and other companies may not want to bother with a niche, ecchi, Vita exclusive.
    Etc…

  • Derek

Multimedia series actually. The social game Siren is coming out soon. But if we are talking about Bhikkhuni it is only 2/5 on the yuri scale vs 4/5 for Mermaid. I could count the fanservice scenes on three fingers with most of the yuri in the transformation and fluff scenes that doesnt effect the game itself and the intro.

  • bateruchan

I agree and we should wait for their official word on why. Simple as that. I know SJW is an easy scapegoat but come on, don’t be dumb.

  • Valwin Mediaz

    you always ere defending SJW

  • British_Otaku

It is a game license first. Senran Kagura had a manga come out before the original 3DS game in 2011. Gaist Crusher had an anime which aired weeks before the game release. Still a game license belonging to Capcom with next to no strings.

Licensing issues are likely to be minimal especially since there are many recurring voice actors and less characters.

I’ll agree that “SJWs” shouldn’t be on the top of the list, but your first suggestion is probably off the mark as well.

  • Eldhin Hellknight

    Damn, i want that game

  • Nin

Truly, this is a loss for LGBT representation in gaming.

Oh wait, silly me, it’s Japanese. Good thing such misogyny can’t disgrace these shores with its presense then :^)

  • ReaperX30

I hope it get localized but at worst they could do an Asian version with english text and menus so we can import it from Play-Asia. Better yet they could do a deal with Play-Asia for some bonuses or something.

  • Master Bating

Maybe it just didnt sell well enough to warrant an overseas release?

I dont get the reaction people are having, this happened well before SWJs were poisoning the well that is our society, Senran Kagura is just as risque as this game, Im sure bad press isnt what they’re afraid of.

  • British_Otaku

Yeah. There aren’t any leads to infer that Marvelous are shying away from this type of game, the European LEs are extravagant as ever as well as physical editions everywhere.

Not sure if sales in Japan have a connection to the west though, I don’t have numbers on hand but I’m 100% sure that we buy more SK games than Japan even if we obviously have a much bigger install base and audience.

Selling badly in Japan shouldn’t really be a reason to avoid reaching out unless your company is closing down or the west has been shunning your games enough that you expect a loss.

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

We really need to band together on this one, and not let them have their way. Operation Rainfall worked in the past so if done correctly we can have Valkyrie Drive too.

  • grgspunk

If this is true, and I really hope it isn’t, there’s only one solution:

Drive the SJWs out, be it through legitimate means OR OTHERWISE.

  • DEADBEEF

Of course I’d like to see it get a worldwide release! What kind of a silly question is that?

  • tccboss

If we demand it enough could we get this game?

  • British_Otaku

If they are on the fence, it would help if they had a bunch of voices but we’ll see.

  • landlock

Chances are the game is rubbish anyway if Xseed aren’t interested. It doesn’t look very good.

  • Siveon

The staff does seem to have a preference for localizing games they have an interest for. See: Trails, EDF, and Brandish localization blogs.

  • landlock

True but then again they have a long standing deal with Falcom and recently they must have made a deal with D3 Publisher since they did both EDF and Onechanbara.

  • Siveon

Eh, that could be a result of the aforementioned interest. Or it’s a corporate move – can’t tell ya which.

  • British_Otaku

I’ve gotten used to publishers picking to localise games based on a potential pay day with popular stuff and in some cases, because their hand was forced by an agreement.

One example of a hand being forced by a corporate deal to localise something is NISA and Hit Maker’s Last Rebellion. Read the interview here: http://www.siliconera.com/2010/06/29/nis-americas-president-on-anime-crossovers-sakura-wars-and-ps3-development/

This is the relevant bit: “Since we got the license for Blade Dancer* we started a relationship with Hit Maker. They told us they are going to make much better titles than Blade Dancer. We funded development of those titles and that’s why we released their titles.

Once we got Last Rebellion we realized it was not the kind of title we should release in the United States because of its quality. I feel really sorry for our customers because we released that title. That’s why I told Nao (PR Manager) we have to release the announcement for Last Rebellion, but never push that title. We cannot say it’s a really great title. We felt really sorry, but we had no choice to release that.”

Very few games must be left alone in Japan or whereever for being bad, especially in a world where Aksys decided to localise Langrisser Re:Incarnation Tensei (godawful) in the same year that Fire Emblem if (fantastic!) and Project X Zone 2 (well at least it is probably better than PxZ1) are localised.

That NISA president stated “From now on, even though we fund a title, we will not release it if the quality is not good enough.”, but I can say without even looking that they probably release other bad or terrible games.

Time and Eternity was one of their games, they probably thought we could be distracted by the pretty graphics. Bleach Soul Ignition probably wasn’t bad, but they did it because they saw good money if they had a series of successful anime games in the future. It was also another case of them partnering with Sony of Japan who owned the Bleach anime license for use in PlayStation games but never thought it was worth the money to localise them.

  • http://www.gamerslive.fr/ Akuma

Quite the surprise, the game isn’t really hot. They’re only kissing on Last Drive, otherwise it’s completely similar to Senran Kagura series: ripped clothes, ending nude with rays of light, … On the other end, well… After 10 (out of 16) chapters, i have mixed feelings: the game is not bad, but only 7 playaable characters, boring story with tons of boring texts… But the gameplay is more elaborate, saving it from failure, imo.

  • E M P

That’s surprising to hear considering how….. in your face the ecchi of it’s counterpart anime was.

Also when you say it’s similar to Senran Kagura does that mean Senran Kagura is of the same quality? I was going to get into the series when it comes out on PC because I’ve always heard people praising it but all of a sudden I’m seeing a ton of “meh” responses.

  • http://www.gamerslive.fr/ Akuma

Well, i’m not a puritan. Of course the girls end in underwear or naked, but nothing to scare me. Senran Kagura series, especially the two Versus on Vita and PS4 are in my opinion, better. Why? Better characters, better story, better comedy and ecchi parts overall. Valkyrie Drive on the other hand, has better graphics (very slightly better), better maps and new interesting gameplay features. (even though mashing square is enough all the time) To me, VD is like Senran Kagura 2 on 3DS: improved fameplay but the rest is poor. VD story is sloooooow. I’m at chapter 11/16, seems it’ll finally become serious… The characters, even though likeable, aren’t really original. Thos in the anime were better imo. So overall, i enjoy the game but i’m slightly disappointed. (Note that i’m also a bit disappointed by Estival Versus, it lacked a bit of contents, and the DLC were just okay (why not adding Kagura and Naruku story from SK2 too?))

  • gamebabble

I think we’re all overreacting here. This sounds less like SJWs preventing this and more “There are no plans CURRENTLY”. Notice how he uses the word “Currently”? And considering Marvelous Europe is down with it, as is XSEED? I think a US release is plausible. Wait until AFTER Estival Versus actually comes out here. THEN ask.

  • PenguinPlayer

Why offer an official english translated version of the trophies then?

Maybe it’s for an asian release, but Takaki specifically says there’s only going to be a japanese version. I feel like there’s something fishy going on here.

  • Voiced

“We’d love to too!,” said Marvelous on Twitter when responding to a game pleading for XSEED Games and or Marvelous to localize the game.”

Shouldn’t it be gamer? Just a minor typo.

  • Azai Cross

I simply don’t know why the West likes shooters. Honestly, games like this one is much better.

  • smoke100lbs

i really love this site because it covers games that i actually want to play unlike most mainstream gaming journalism but god some of the commenters here are just disgusting.

this has nothing to do with “SJW” or feminism, it has to do with the fact that it’s INSANELY expensive to localize a game for western markets, especially a hyper-niche game like VD:B for a platform that’s completely fucking dead to us like the vita.

anyone with even a piss stain worth of critical thinking skills can see that and no JP company is bowing to pressure for censorship from the West in 2016 -the decisions are made by these companies themselves in an attempt to actually sell games. see the only recent case of “true” censorship (as in straight removed from the game) i can remember in Monster Monpiece, which was a removal of just the most intense loli cards.

so get over it and stop blaming people with no control over anything when shit happens. you prepubescent twerps just make the rest of us normal adult gamers (and yes some of us are even female omg wow!) look like a bunch of goddamn sweaty mouth-breathers and i’m really so sick of it…

  • Derek

Fuck you sjw cucks. Inb4 sjw dusguised as a “normal person”.

Not getting the game is censorship. And that includes being forced to import

  • British_Otaku

Incompetence in marketing and recognising an audience.

I’d switch that with “censorship”. Europe waiting over a decade for Chrono Trigger is that. Perhaps if we can seal some confirmation that pressure from other parties is stopping them from localising something, we can call it that.

Marvelous have too much guts to be scared off with another lewd Vita game.

  • British_Otaku

I agree that it is highly unlikely to be “SJW influence” or whatever and even that it is likely an internal sales concern.

I don’t think no Japanese companies are bowing down to pressure for censorship though, we’ve seen cases of localisation teams making the decision to adjust content frequently to widen the audience even from Nintendo published alone in the last year.

Companies not just 8-4 have had the initiative and been approved to make adjustments thinking that it improves the reception of titles. There are even localisation team folks who attempt to take praise from cutting content or disguise it.

Some people here are jumping the gun, but you may as well address their points rather than making a broad claim like this.

  • Thanatos2k

The anime is shit, is the game any better?

  • British_Otaku

Not finished the anime, but it appears to be one of the weaker Marvelous lewd portable games of late according to this review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxKdTF14GDU

You might like it if you played the SK series, but I personally like SK Burst and 2 the most (some people Burst over 2), while some people like SV/EV (some people SV over EV). Weigh it out from this video.

  • leingod

Answering the question in the article: Yes, I’d totally get this if it was localized.

  • Alex Romero

“but nobody is trying to taek ur games away, guys!”

  • Ben (Broken)

I wouldn’t call gay/lesbian relationships risque anymore but alas, it seems as if the SOC JUS censorship rally cry has went so far to bite EVERYONE in the ass, even the minorities that SOC JUS “claims” to protect/represent. Can’t wait until we go back to a more “open minded” framework again when it comes to localization, importing, and ratings. Then again, it could just be a matter of the people involved thinking “this kind of game” simply wouldn’t sell over here. Anybody know more about the genre? Rpg,beat em up,fighter,or visual novel??

  • British_Otaku

I honestly can’t say I remember a time when video games had a collectively easy time getting localised back in the “open minded” days. We’ve had cuts forever as much as it pains me.

Genre? A beat em up with long visual novel like dialogue segments (two endings too). The fifth/sixth Bakunyu Hyper Battle game produced by Kenichiro Takaki and Marvelous, but the first to be outside of the Senran Kagura series and to be developed by Meteorise (who previously did a spinoff): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dy9OEwWcpaM

  • Mir Teiwaz

I doubt I’d play it, but I have nothing against it coming over the big pond either.

  • anon9370

This game belongs on Steam. It would probably make a good return.
