But NoA’s localization teams whole goal is just sterilize everything so it has no personality and everything is what they deem to be “family friendly”. Even though this does not appeal to fucking anyone. By “cleansing” the game, they are pushing away the people that are actually interested, and the people they are trying to reach probably don’t even know the game exists.

Like, they obviously are horrible when it comes to censorship, but then you have a lot of incredibly pointless changes to dialogue and characters so that everything is “neat” and “clean” and “simple”. Their translations are just awful, everyone talks almost exactly the same aside from one or two quirky characters that have a really forced and stereotypical accent.

I really don’t get NoA at all. Then we have people celebrating this removal and others. Alright, now I’m definitely never spending my money on a Nintendo product anymore.

First you have to buy the actual hardware to play stuff on, two pieces of them if you even want to play all their games.

Then there’s mandatory accessories like chargers and normal controllers you have to buy seperately before normal use of the device you bought.

Then you need to wait ages before games get released in the West, nevermind Europe which can get them up to years later.

Last but not least you need to buy overpriced and insanely difficult to find below-McDonalds quality toys to access all the content the game ships with.

And in the case of this particular game, you need to purchase three seperate products/campaigns to get the “full” vanilla experience as well, before DLC map packs and such enter the picture.

Then, after all of that, we still don’t get a remotely complete product because those latte liberals at Nintendo’s Treehouse and 8-4 think all their potential paying customers are small children and thusly shouldn’t be allowed access to this content.

Remember when localization meant taking something that is unfamiliar to someone and presenting it in a way that helps the person understand this new and strange thing, but still stay true to the source material so as to celebrate cultural differences as opposed of trying to hide them and make them “fit” better?

Now localization is taking an axe to something and saying “look, is good now, we made better”.

Localization should be like a guide bringing you into an unfamiliar thing and showing you everything in it’s full glory. Not try to hide everything or mask it because they think people might think it’s weird. It meant staying true to the source material. It meant framing things in different ways to help people understand something they are unfamiliar with. A good localization can actually be informative and tell you something about this other culture. Maybe some people will think it’s weird. Maybe some won’t like it. That’s fine, not everyone like everything.

It’s really just a shame too because Nintendo’s developers are actually pretty damn good, but then we have NoA acting as gatekeepers that try their hardest to butcher everything and just bleach the games until they have no personality left. Seriously, look at the scripts in recent NoA translations. Everyone talks exactly the same. Narration is always exactly the same.

I think the issue is repeating the propaganda line of equating copyright infringement with theft, the issue is far more nuanced than that and piracy is really the unavoidable symptom of completely broken legislation.

Some very quick history:

Copyright was conceived by Mary I of England (a.k.a. Bloody Mary) as an unlimited monopoly granted to the London printers’ guild in order to prevent non-Catholics and political dissenters from printing, so it was essentially a tool for censorship. I just want to say if you don’t want your games being censored in the future, you can not buy these games. Buying them doesn’t send them a message, it doesn’t matter how hard you complain to them because they don’t care once they’ve got the money. To send a real message do not buy the game, do not buy any game that has been censored, it doesn’t matter if the censored content makes up less than 1% of the game, do not buy it.

Every time you buy a censored game you’re telling them it’s ok and giving those that want games censored more power. Don’t buy them. It’s hard and you’ll miss out on your favourite games but in the long run, you’ll end up getting the games you want, uncensored.

I never wanted it in the first place, but such blatant censorship is inexcusable. Let the consumer decide if something is for them or not.

Girls Mode 3 and the European “version”‘s demo (presumably the full game as well). Girls Mode 3 is actually really fun and kawaii and I’m glad I imported it instead of waiting for a western version.

Someone playing the demo asked if something was done to those characters, because their outfits don’t match their skin color (matching skin tone is actually a very important part of real world fashion) and I confirmed it. Haven’t heard of anyone playing the “full” european version, but I assume “Arabella”‘s brother was also blackfaced, meaning the main cast is now 3/12ths black (despite the cast already being 1/10th black).

Even so, they’re under direct orders from Namco, the game’s publisher. The only thing Nintendo has done here is grant a license to Monolithsoft to use Fire Emblem and Xenoblade characters (And yeah, Monolithsoft still needs permission for Xenoblade characters, even if they did make them). I don’t think there’s anything to fear in this regard.

From my experience when NOA butcher. er localize, games, that’s the version that’s published in Europe as well, with NOE acting purely as publisher and distributor, with no re-editing.
Interesting side note, XBC, the last story and disaster day of crisis, were effectively untempered with when NOE localized those games themselves, and NOA didn’t even want to know, and only after operation rainfall did they published one of those games, where the last story was published by Xseeds, and disaster was never brought stateside.
That’s why I have no more faith in NOA, but believe that it’s a shame that NOE are no longer in the localization game, considering there not run by prudish psychopaths.

It’s more complicated than you make it sound. For starters, new buyers are more likely to return as their “interest” is of a greater intensity. People who buy used are usually impulse buyers who saw it in a store, curious people who grabbed something they don’t know they’ll like because it’s cheap, or people who did it for a reason and will continue doing it

Plus there are all the emails people keep claiming to send (though I can’t confirm any of them are actually doing it), the fact that neither interest nor used sales can actually fund the sequel even if they’re foolish enough to believe the number of players translates to number of new sales next time, etc

No buying used isn’t going to show interest or make the problem worse and anyone who wants to should. Importing is a complete pain in the ass and costs more, and running CFW pretty much guarantees you can’t play anything online unless you own two separate 3DSs, which is expensive

Nintendo is completely inept at gathering this kind of data. Did you know that Nintendo is still incapable of banning you from using roms online? A full generation later and they still cant identify who bought what, and who is using what online. A game catridge on my hands, after being passed to you, is still the exact same blip in Nintendo’s radar as it was before.

DLC…? Not everyone buys that. Someone buying used games may very well be a shopper that is not keen on spending too much money on a single game, and may very well skip on DLC altogether. I also highly doubt Nintendo even checks for that, given their incompetence that I previously stated.

In the loophole people are trying to find about lending a game, somebody paid for it and while they lend it, they can’t use it, thus no value is lost. Facts are facts: you are sold something. You’re right though in that we should have remained skeptical first, and that’s before the reply from NoA’s Richard Woolslayer (what must one do to earn such a silly family name) was made. For one, I can’t find the quote from Nintendo anywhere except in the kotaku article and other sites that cite it.

So its one of two things: Either its NoA that’s lying or Kotaku has falsify their sources on the topic. This wouldnt turn out to well for either of them once we know the actual outcome.

One one hand, this is NoA’s usual M.O., given their actions as of late. On the other hand it could be Kotaku being thirsty for clicks after being blacklisted by Bethesda recently along with a number of other shady practices having been called out on.

Weather this mess falls upon either NoA or Kotaku, it’ll be difficult for them to bounce out of this one.

I’ll be fair to say that I am not a huge fan of the stories in FE mainly because they are kinda generic. Thank god the gameplay more than makes up for the story because the gameplay is hugely why I play FE in the first place (well that and Tharja, love me some Tharja). But for some reason, this tiny mechanic that has no bearing on the plot or even the gameplay whatsoever and FE fans lose their shit. Meanwhile, I made a response to you but its still pending after two days but it included this part: “In the 2.5 version of Kingdom Hearts , BBS had its entire Multiplayer scrapped out and nobody gave a flying fuck.” But, oh no, NOA and NOE remove something that has nothing to do with the gameplay at all and its ruined. I am not gonna attack you. However I want to see our position. The fact of the matter is that censorship can easily be eradicated if we worked together and not support censored products. But I’ve come to the sad realization that this will never happen because most people just don’t care and then rationalize it away. It’s attitudes like that that allows companies to keep doing what they are doing. As much as we speak up the silent majority has shown that they don’t care and that’s truly disheartening. That’s why I think you’re getting the blowback your getting. They see you as supporting censorship and undermining the anti censorship people’s efforts.

But yes, I agree with you. I’d say Reaction videos are the absolute scum of YouTube, the bottom lung in the ladder, but Let’s Play’s are the next step up.

I like AVGN style reviews. If you watch his behind the scenes videos, you can tell he puts a lot of effort into it. Obviously, they aren’t for everyone, but I like them for what they are.

Well, when I criticize specific kinds of YouTube videos, I do so because the format itself is fundamentally flawed.

If you have actual talent, like the AVGN, it doesn’t seem right to put that kind of video in with things like React, which requires no talent at all.

But yes, gaming media is corrupt, we know this. Seeing people act like removing a minigame is grounds for piracy is disgusting.

Nothing to do with ratings, the people at Treehouse are just the kind of folk who would look at something like this and think ‘this is creepy/offensive so we’re taking it out’. Nothing about the mini game would warrant a rating change. Same thing with the boob slider in xenoblade x and the lingerie outfits in fatal frame, or the native american costume in bravely default, etc. The trend in censorship that’s been happening is because companies are either afraid to offend someone in the media, or that same type of hyper-offended person is calling the shots with the localization. Welcome to the new age of offense culture, enjoy your stay until it inevitably rebounds. Just hope it doesn’t take too many years.

I got tired of relying in these lame localizations so I just learned Japanese and now only import games. Japanese is easy to learn (particularly for Portuguese/Spanish speakers). It took 1 years for basic reading and before that you just have to keep familiarize with the language.
