idk if I buy that though. Senran Kagura games have come to the US with minimal backlash. I think the youngest character in that game is 15, but they never mention it in the English versions. Otherwise those games are uncensored and get M ratings. Arcana Heart 3 is another example of having younger girls in compromising positions and that game got a T rating.

I agree and that is a great thing about this site but having people throwing around shade pointlessly isn’t constructive to conversation and ultimately makes the website look bad. Less censorship is great and if they stick with uncensored games they’ll get more sales and a better rep with customers but this still worries me. I really hope this doesn’t lead them to always airing on the side of caution and not getting risky with licensing choices.

I can deal with content being censored that is absolutely necessary in being censored in order for it to not get an AO, but the Nintendo model of censorship though is the biggest problem in the industry right now.

This is really the best option for gamers. Just completely bypass the whole localization part. This gives US gamers the game sooner and it gives us the true version of the game (not butchered in translation, redub, and censorship).

Sony hasn’t allowed any AO games on their platform at all, digital or physical. How is this a solution? The only way this would work is if they port their games to PC for localization and only release there. However, this isn’t viable for a lot of games.

It is easier to end up in AO in the West than the equivalent in Japan. The ratings board here is more sensitive on the sex stuff than in Japan so something that would get a normal release there could hit AO territory here barring it from release on a Sony system here.

Don’t know about Germany, but the in the U.S. you can have games where you can draw and quarter a character and crush his head in a vise and no one raises an eyebrow but we’ve only fairly recently seen games released that has scenes showing naked buttocks or female breasts (Probably with internal censors hemming and hawing if not screaming the whole time).

California has strong gun control, and those shooters were certainly committing two or three felonies even before they opened fire (one for carrying a loaded weapon without a carry permit, one because the senior facility was a gun-free zone). well in normal jurisdictions yes, but the ESRB has no legal standing in the US, but anyway, the question is why are games like cod and stuff are not rated 18+, also the only thing you need to emply is age check, isnt hard to ask for the ID.

Japanese console games don’t have fully nude girls, period. There are no nipples in Japanese developed console games, and western games with nipples are censored.

The Japanese rating system is more strict on both nudity and violence, that’s why nothing developed there is in danger of an AO rating here.

I think to some degree that may be more of what they are concerned with than the complaining it is alot easier to hit AO in the west than in Japan.

Things worse than anything CH has done have been released in the west just fine. Take a look at Saki in Onechanbara. XSeed recently released Onechanbara Z2 Chaos in western markets just fine and there’s a costume of her wearing nothing but a banana and whipped cream to hide her crotch and nipples. She’s 14 years old. That was released on the PS4 in the west this very year with an M rating.

Every game that has been released by NISA, IF and so on that has been censored has been the result of self-censorship, not because of an AO rating they ‘might’ get which wouldn’t happen.

The MPAA and ESRB are entirely different entities that function entirely differently. I’ve seen “This Film Is Not yet Rated”. The way their ratings work is also entirely different. The only way fora ESRB rating to directly affect how a game is sold is the AO-rating, which only TWO GAMES have gotten in the HISTORY of the ESRB system (three if you count GTA:SA before the Cold Coffee patch). Other than that, the rating is a RECOMMENDATION only. Retailers are free to sell GTAV to 6 yearolds. Most simply choose not to.

I’m surprised at all the things that get changed could even remotely get an AO rating. They are stylized art. It’s not realistic graphics.

Yet certain western games featuring nudity or sex or sexual situations seem to skirt by with no objections.

Yet a game with 2D and highly stylized art that some people interpret in broadly dumb way is no good.

An example I can point to was in Agarest 2(?) where there is a mini-game in which you can “massage” members of your party to give them “Ecstacy time”. Normally not a problem, but there is a character called “Fiona (child)”. PEGI told NISA that the implication of giving a known child “ecstacy time” was a bit too on the nose and said it would be fine if they just removed the (child) part of her name. The implication may still be there, but its utter deniability at that point. Their reaction was to remove the character from participating in the mini-game instead.

Hell, in Nep Mk2 theres a rather vivid scene in which one of the baddies speaks at length how much he enjoys licking the navels of young girls (and does so with audio). That pushed the 12 rating of previous titles up to a 16. Not even an 18, let alone needing to be censored to make the cut.

Unless youre moving from an 18 to a “cant be sold in a store” rating then the audience to be reached is no bigger or smaller. Many people just buy online. A lot of fans of nicher titles/devs like this will opt to buy direct given the opportunity — NISA always plowed through their immediate stock with one exception: Mugen Souls. The one major title they came out saying they “had to” censor.

This affects Japan, the US and the EU all in different ways. Just go compare the ratings boards in each region. The US heavily regulates lewd imagery but is fine with violence, Japan is tolerant of lewd but pretty strict on violence and the EU is kinda meh on both fronts to a point (although violence shoots a rating up faster than lewd).

You really just got to take it as it comes. Butchering a game for the potential of new customers is guaranteeing (some) old ones avoid. I know Im not alone when I say I have removed games from my wishlist when they remove content. IFI got an earful when they did it for Monpiece, and they didnt even get a lower rating for doing so.

These sort of tactics will make companies like PlayAsia a lot of money, but the downside is that it will be at the expense of the consumer. SJWs have a direct impact on the industry artificially raising the price of certain games.

It’s good to see a publisher that doesn’t want to censor the games
they bring to foreign markets. I mean, that’s the whole point of games
that come outside of your country – they contain different values and
ideas that can clash with your own beliefs, but can also bring you new
light that you never would have considered before. To censor it is to
defeat the entire purpose of bringing it to other countries.

However,
it also pains me to see that Idea Factory is letting the people who
want censorship win. The fact that we aren’t getting the game at all is a
form of censorship in itself. What IF needs to do, and what all other
Japanese devs who find themselves at odds with the political watchdogs
in other countries need to do, is just not care. Release it anyways. Any
amount of backlash and criticism can only bring more attention to the
integrity of the original artist in not compromising for other markets.
To me, that integrity is incredibly more respectable than any amount of
“Cultural Sensibilty” ever could.

And it may seem
daunting and not worth all the trouble it brings, but once all the waves
of harking subside (Which they usually do after a few days when the
social nitpickers get a new target to harass), what we’ll be left with
is a good game released untainted for the dedicated fans who have no
other way of playing it. And once the first few publishers pioneer into
pure release territory, other publishers will feel comfortable in doing
so too. For all the publishers who want someone to follow in releasing
uncensored games, do it yourself. Be the change you want to see, and
inspire other publishers to not be afraid. After all, sticks and stones

That’s something that seems to already be happening in the Compile Heart line of games. At least for Moe Chronicles. Much more ideal than a censored western release, but still not really ideal.

The Moe Chronicles series has so far been translated to English in the Asia versions. The 1st one sometime last year and the Sequel will also be getting that treatment. As stated, it’s far from ideal, but for now it works as the environment here changes.

1) All they’re saying is that they rather not release games that would require to be censored by big ratings boards like PEGI or the ESRB. Alot of people have been vocal to IFI about unnecessary censorship, and they’re taking it to heart

2) The fanservice games that compile heart put out usually also involve lolis. Say what you want about ESRB/PEGI rating guidelines, but I do believe that games like moe chronicle and moe crystal would be rated AO unedited. IFI’s unwillingness to localize these games might also be convincing Compile Heart Asia to do their own releases with English text

When they refuse to release a fanservice game that has nothing but big-breasted adult women, then I would raise the warning flags. Until then, being extremely cautious about lolicon content is very warranted

3) It sounds like they actually want to fight the status-quo, like what Xseed is doing. If they want to become more vocal, then more power to them. As long as it doesn’t appear that they’re rolling over and kneeling, I can’t help but support them

Speaking as a Let’s Player, I cover certain games that need more spotlight than others. Now I can attest to this because I do Visual Novels on my channel sometimes and while are most risque than others, I’m in support of this. I mean, really…we’ve lost many good titles because we’ve just allowed these SJW idiots dictate what’s good for us. I’ve said time and again, “don’t like it, don’t watch it.” We have the ESRB for that reason. To me what I do on my channel is more about gamer awareness and less about the numbers game. Since Steam is an always available port for PC games, it’s mainly my go-to spot for playing games I wouldn’t have access to. As fans, we support companies that support us and even now with social media outlets we use, it’s even more to support them now more than ever.

You know, I’d be happy with their decision if they just include english menu options and subs like DOAX. If they do that, then I can still import and play them on my PS4.

I’d rather them have the game translated and sell it through places like Play-Asia. That would be a good solution.

Maybe it’s just me getting older along with the responsibilities that go along with it, but I find it really hard to give two shits what happens to fake characters that neither look nor act like actual human beings.

It does have fan service, sure, but more than that, they are meant to be light hearted romps that pay homage to past franchises and the gaming industry.

You also dont know shit about companies like IFI. IFI among with, Xseed, Atlus, and NISA to name a few are localizing game publishers that banks off niche titles. That’s what make them relevant and stand out from the saturation thats in gaming today. And yes they sometimes even localize games that are even just as or more risque that DOAX3 which they do have to be regulated by the ESRB when localizing these titles.

I loved the Agarest War series. I found the generation crossing rpg to be fun as hell, the romance options entertaining, and yes, I liked the fanservice as well. I wasn’t surprised that content had been stripped form the game, but when I found out just how much I was quite pissed.

I’m saddened by Compile Heart’s position, but I’m actually more angry at localizers who choose to make drastic changes, exploit the language barrier they exist to cross to not inform the original devs what they doing, then claim they were given carte blanche to do so when called out for it.
Quite frankly, it’s insulting to have some guy editing things out games because he’s worried some people would object. I’m an adult, I can make decisions for myself on what I consume, and I WON’T be made to feel ashamed for what I like.

TBH, I’m largely disappointed by western games. It feels like western studios are trying to reach the lowest common denominator with everything they produce, which leaves a certain blandness in most titles. Conversely, Eastern devs are quite happy to cater to niche markets, doing their utmost to bring something to a smaller group of consumers who will happily buy the things they like.

I’m not a marketing guy, I don’t know if that would or even could work in the west, but I hold out hope that more games will simply be translated into other languages and sold online. My preference for unadulterated content is such that I would even pay for the markup caused by import taxes on hard copies, if I couldn’t just DL the game.

Seeing as how they have found success on Steam and how censorship isn’t really that much of a problem there if Monster Monpiece is anything to go by, I’m thinking it’ll be fine. I’m all for uncensored PC ports going forward, if that’s what will ultimately come out of this decision.
