Niche Gamer Plays: Pillars of Eternity – Monk Creation Tutorial

The first character creation guide I did for Pillars of Eternity was done with the knowledge of 60 hours worth of gameplay. The second one came after twice that and another full trip through the game. With a deeper understanding of what works, as well as what the expansion pack changes, I was able to create a viable end-game monk.

Why the monk? Partly due to the monk being such an odd character, and partly because of the negative opinion people have of the class in the game’s forums. Surprisingly, the monk isn’t as bad as folks say, and it may even be one of the best classes in the game. At least in terms of survival, anyway.

Though this guide was made when my monk was level 9, I have since taken her through the rest of the game and most of the expansion pack. She is a terrifying combatant that should, if you follow this path, become your best damage dealer.

NICE! Thanks man! I could use this!

  • Heavily Augmented

Really nice guide. I certainly wouldn’t mind to see more of these.

So what’s a good entry CRPG? I’ve been thinking of Wasteland 2, Pillars, or Divine Divinity

  • alterku

You want Divinity Original Sin. Nothing comes close in terms of choice, gameplay, and mechanics.

    *cough*Baldur’s Gate 2*cough*

    Neverwinter Nights 2.

BG has a shit combat system

The first time I played, I made a monk. Because I love monks/unarmed characters. It felt underwhelming, not awkward, especially with what I felt was “high risk, low reward” wounds system.

I love the Druid, just morphing and tearing shit up, or slinging spells from afar. I also love the Cipher. Which can get OP. My favourite would have to be a blunderbuss wielding Cipher.

I’ll probably try a Monk again, and put more in speed/dex. I didn’t know that Two Weapon Style increases attack speed for fists.
