All this being said, I hope that Compile Heart/Idea Factory make it accessible for Western fans by releasing an Asian version with competent English subs, like they did for Moe Chronicle or like KT is doing for DOAX3. There’s definitely no way a game like Moe Chronicle would’ve made it to western store shelves without being censored, and quite heavily I’d imagine; and I have no qualms about importing a game with English subs already in it when I know the game is uncensored.

This is perhaps the most bitter sweet sentiment I’ve heard on the issue. I am not surprised since I knew this was setting a very dangerous precedence. We need to now more than ever make it clear to developers that their money lies in not giving a fuck about these toxic parasites.

Hatred is a special case. It’s a game where the whole point is you going around brutally murdering innocents. It is graphic and extremely violent. ManHunt 2 was also originally flagged with an AO rating until they toned it down a bit. It’s not unheard of for an extremely graphically violent game to get an AO rating, it’s just very rare.

If the fear is that the games will receive an AO rating from the ESRB or that they will be lambasted on social media by certain ‘camps’ of individuals, then I would pose the following question: who among us believes for one second that folks from that ‘camp’ would be inclined to purchase their games in the first place? As regards the Neptunia games, I haven’t had the privilege to play any of the titles in this apparently popular RPG series, but as a heavy RPG enthusiast, I am always saddened when my genre of choice is pinched in any way. While I applaud the decision not to give in to Western censorship standards (which seem more inspired and enforced by the ‘camp’ I alluded to earlier than by any actual on-the-books regs), I have to wonder if perhaps a more honest method of striving against such standards would be to localize the games in their original format, instead of punishing loyal fans by withholding titles from them.

Controversy has only ever been a positive thing as far as sales go. GTA, Doom, Mortal Kombat, Hatred, all these games got the wide spread attention they did because of how controversial they were. Hatred in particular, that game would have been absolutely nothing if it wasn’t edgelord extreme.

You might think “well that’s violence, not sex appeal”. Okay, Dragon’s Crown got the notoriety it did because of outrage. It’s pretty much DoA’s entire marketing strategy (and why I think KT’s “reasoning” for not localizing DoAX3 is also a complete lie).

So yeah, I don’t buy it for a second. Don’t want to censor, then don’t censor. Let the outrage work to your advantage. A company that wants to make money isn’t going to say “No, we don’t want money because some people will be upset, which will only cause them to give the game attention, which will make the game more visible, which means more people will hear about and thus generating more potential customers that otherwise might not have been reached”.

This is really the best option for gamers. Just completely bypass the whole localization part. This gives US gamers the game sooner and it gives us the true version of the game (not butchered in translation, redub, and censorship).

However with games like DOAX3 is even suspected on not getting localized because of possible cultural backlash, the gaming press was quick to try to play damage control saying otherwise.

Normally, I don’t post comments on these sites (and just talk them over with my friends) but this one… This one de-lurks me.

On one hand, I actually understand this stance. There are certain things that definitely won’t be accepted in the West (lolis are a huge example) but I have a couple of problems with this article.

01) The article title feels a bit more hyperbolic than it really needs to be, especially with that quote regarding Compile Hearts which basically inferred they’ve been on that stance anyway. If it’s something they’ve been doing anyway… why put it like that and make fans believe that they’re going to stop localizing it, or other games? Not to mention, if you read the full interview, they don’t go any deeper than that and it seems that they’re proud of the Nep games and will probably keep working on it.

02) Even if they are afraid of certain games not making it in the West market… there’s Steam. Slowly but surely (with these political puritan punks trying to fight all these useless ass battles), AO games are becoming the norm and especially with the Internet being prevalent. It’s easier than ever to buy these AO games on Steam and play them (like that yuri visual novel series that just got put on recently) so… *shrug* It’s a losing battle if they were true.

TLDR: Was the hyperbolic article really necessary? And even if they stopped localizing games for GameStop, there’s fucking Steam so it’s kind of a useless stance anyway.

1) All they’re saying is that they rather not release games that would require to be censored by big ratings boards like PEGI or the ESRB. Alot of people have been vocal to IFI about unnecessary censorship, and they’re taking it to heart

2) The fanservice games that compile heart put out usually also involve lolis. Say what you want about ESRB/PEGI rating guidelines, but I do believe that games like moe chronicle and moe crystal would be rated AO unedited. IFI’s unwillingness to localize these games might also be convincing Compile Heart Asia to do their own releases with English text

When they refuse to release a fanservice game that has nothing but big-breasted adult women, then I would raise the warning flags. Until then, being extremely cautious about lolicon content is very warranted

3) It sounds like they actually want to fight the status-quo, like what Xseed is doing. If they want to become more vocal, then more power to them. As long as it doesn’t appear that they’re rolling over and kneeling, I can’t help but support them

That’s something that seems to already be happening in the Compile Heart line of games. At least for Moe Chronicles. Much more ideal than a censored western release, but still not really ideal.

Hopefully this will get Japanese devs to find more alternatives to get their games into the west instead of using localization companies to fuck up their work.

Still, Steam is becoming a profitable after thought for these companies. It may be an alternative but as long as $$$ keeps coming, we’ll probably start getting Western games exclusively for Steam.

The Moe Chronicles series has so far been translated to English in the Asia versions. The 1st one sometime last year and the Sequel will also be getting that treatment. As stated, it’s far from ideal, but for now it works as the environment here changes.

Sony hasn’t allowed any AO games on their platform at all, digital or physical. How is this a solution? The only way this would work is if they port their games to PC for localization and only release there. However, this isn’t viable for a lot of games.

Until the West stops being dicks about their ratings and people stop complaining about the stuff in video games, we are going to continue seeing developers from Japan and other countries stop localizing games. Speaking as a Let’s Player, I cover certain games that need more spotlight than others. Now I can attest to this because I do Visual Novels on my channel sometimes and while are most risque than others, I’m in support of this. I mean, really…we’ve lost many good titles because we’ve just allowed these SJW idiots dictate what’s good for us. I’ve said time and again, “don’t like it, don’t watch it.” We have the ESRB for that reason. To me what I do on my channel is more about gamer awareness and less about the numbers game. Since Steam is an always available port for PC games, it’s mainly my go-to spot for playing games I wouldn’t have access to. As fans, we support companies that support us and even now with social media outlets we use, it’s even more to support them now more than ever.

You know, I’d be happy with their decision if they just include english menu options and subs like DOAX. If they do that, then I can still import and play them on my PS4.

I loved the Agarest War series. I found the generation crossing rpg to be fun as hell, the romance options entertaining, and yes, I liked the fanservice as well. I wasn’t surprised that content had been stripped form the game, but when I found out just how much I was quite pissed.

I’m saddened by Compile Heart’s position, but I’m actually more angry at localizers who choose to make drastic changes, exploit the language barrier they exist to cross to not inform the original devs what they doing, then claim they were given carte blanche to do so when called out for it.
Quite frankly, it’s insulting to have some guy editing things out games because he’s worried some people would object. I’m an adult, I can make decisions for myself on what I consume, and I WON’T be made to feel ashamed for what I like.

TBH, I’m largely disappointed by western games. It feels like western studios are trying to reach the lowest common denominator with everything they produce, which leaves a certain blandness in most titles. Conversely, Eastern devs are quite happy to cater to niche markets, doing their utmost to bring something to a smaller group of consumers who will happily buy the things they like.

I’m not a marketing guy, I don’t know if that would or even could work in the west, but I hold out hope that more games will simply be translated into other languages and sold online. My preference for unadulterated content is such that I would even pay for the markup caused by import taxes on hard copies, if I couldn’t just DL the game.

TBH, if the game is japanese, I think that us in the west should respect that their views on this kind of thing are different to over here. Quite honestly, developers shouldn’t be expected to sensor this kind of thing just because the views on sensorship are different, and really I completely agree with the company’s decision because it is important to retain integrity and respect the original artist’s vision.

So you have absolutely no insight into the matter. The law WAS changed in 2010 (well, it was voted through in 2010, it may actually have been changed in 2011, I’m too lazy to check). I guess 5 years constitutes “a long long time” in youir world. It was the very reason why Simon Lundström was prosecuted for possession of child pornography in the first place. The law was interpreted by the Swedish supreme court in away that very narrowly limits what can be judged to be child pornography when it comes to animated depictions.

So it’s not censorship if businesses do it themselves? The problem with a ratings board is hat rather than a parent or guardian evaluating games on a case-by-case basis (i.e. a parent doing their damn job) it allows people to lump games which contain very little to be objectionable with games that contain a whole lot to object to. Because ratings boards do not have a transparent process, the application of their rules is wildly inconsistent and politically motivated.

If you don’t think there is be a problem, I would advise you to watch “This Film is not Yet Rated” which details corruption within the MPAA’s rating board. The same problems that occur in the the film industry currently exist within the gaming industry.

I’m surprised at all the things that get changed could even remotely get an AO rating. They are stylized art. It’s not realistic graphics.

Yet certain western games featuring nudity or sex or sexual situations seem to skirt by with no objections.

The MPAA and ESRB are entirely different entities that function entirely differently. I’ve seen “This Film Is Not yet Rated”. The way their ratings work is also entirely different. The only way fora ESRB rating to directly affect how a game is sold is the AO-rating, which only TWO GAMES have gotten in the HISTORY of the ESRB system (three if you count GTA:SA before the Cold Coffee patch). Other than that, the rating is a RECOMMENDATION only. Retailers are free to sell GTAV to 6 yearolds. Most simply choose not to.

No, it’s not censorship if the content creator makes a CREATIVE OR BUSINESS DECISION to do something. The definition of censorship is that something has been SUPPRESSED. Suppression is always involuntary.

If the warning has the effect of making it not pay to release the game, then it’s censorship. A business decision isn’t really voluntary if the conditions that require it are deliberately created by bullies.

You’re generally correct but there’s exceptions too. Hakuoki for example had the protagonist rewritten by the localizer to be more empowering and whatnot, according to himself in an interview. He disliked how she was ditzy and spoke of sex in passive ways so he changed her a ton.

It matters little, because it is simply unreasonable to assume that no such example exist. Until recently it was pretty common practice to have marriage starting from 14 years old (for girls). And there was no limit to age difference. Humanity have lived like this for a LONG time. It is a lot more reasonable to assume that some of those marriages with adult had positive results, than to assume that ALL of them were negative.
