[UPDATE] Report: R. Mika is Now Censored in Street Fighter V

[UPDATE]

We’ve been alerted to a possible second character being slightly censored, this time in the form of Cammy:

The left is her original animation, while the right is the same animation from the latest beta for the game. You can find the source video for the second image here:

We’re still awaiting a comment from Capcom, and will update the story should we receive an update.

[ORIGINAL STORY]

We’ve learned of a disappointing new development regarding Capcom and Sony Computer Entertainment’s upcoming fighter, Street Fighter V.

The bombastic and quite-exposed fighter, Rainbow Mika, has been spotted in some new gameplay with what appears to be her animations somewhat censored.

You can view her new pre-super move taunt below, via IGN:

In her earlier build, the camera would aggressively zoom in on her butt as she happily slapped it – prior to finishing her opponent off with a joint-butt sandwich aerial piledriver of sorts. It’s also worth mentioning the camera angle is changed in the scene, as well as the overall style of the scene.

We’ve reached out to Capcom for a comment – and we’ll update the story if we receive an update.

Street Fighter V is launching on February 16th on both PC and PlayStation 4.

This isn’t standing up to censorship though. There are multiple people in these comments saying “Fuck this game! Preorder cancelled!” over a butt slap. A butt slap that may only be missing in one video due to a glitch. There’s a line between being strictly principled and schizophrenic paranoia about a developer’s ability/desire to make changes in a beta.

And I think that’s something people here need to remember: this is a beta and not a finished product. Were this game on shelves and the change confirmed then there would at least be an argument in principle here but it’s not and there isn’t.

We don’t know the reason behind the change. Could be that they just prefer this. I’m fine with developers changing things. It’s their game, they can do what they want. Maybe they think it was just too much.

It’s because a company that censors still gets money so essentially they lose nothing from censoring. What’s censored isn’t the problem. I mean you already have a PC so you can look up all the fapfodder you could ever ask for. The problem is the fact that anything was censored at all. As far as the company cares, purchasing the product means you’re okay with it. That’s the logic anyway. We’ll still have to wait and see what’s up with this particular case.

In all situations like this where it seems like something small you have to keep in mind that for a lot of people it’s not about what was changed itself. It’s the fact that it was changed/censored at all. People don’t like moral authoritarians and don’t want to support studios that censor themselves to pander to them. I doubt this is censorship. Looks more like streamlining the move as the butt slapping is still in it just not the main focus. QA probably thought the camera angle change was too jarring in the original or something.

I actually don’t know if I’d count this as censorship. I’m not denying that it COULD be censorship, and if I find out that Capcom changed it because of external pressure then I’ll get my trusty torch and pitchfork out with the rest of you. If they were going to censor R. Mika, though, I think the focus would have been on the costume: THAT’S what the PC Brigade was throwing their daily bitchfest about, from what I saw. Removing only the ass slap, when the ending pose shows the full ass in proud display (the ass actually seems to have more screentime in the new animation), would be a very odd way to try to appease people who don’t like sexuality. That’s why I’m not convinced this is censorship and not just a poorly-executed camera change for some other unknown reason.

That being said, the old animation was way better and I hope they change it back.

Yes, this isn’t censorship. This is more like a writing revision between editions of a book. Her ass and ass slap are still prominently displayed in both scenes. It’s not remotely close to something like removing jiggling physics or a more covered-up leotard.

At worst, the emphasis of the scene is changed (i.e. what camera angles are for), but nothing is removed (censorship).

The uncensored one shows her slapping her ass in full view. The censored one has the camera zoomed in to only show her upper body when she does the taunt. The other one is a finishing move where their opponent is doing the splits while being K.O.ed. The censored one has his legs together. You’re comparing the KO freeze to the actual end of the animation. Pause that second video at the exact moment they hit the ground, which is when the KO freeze would come in, and you’ll see identical posture.

The “new” animation looks jacked up in general. Mika’s side and shoulder are clipping through Nash, and it doesn’t look like Nadeshiko is holding onto any part of him. It looks more like it’s not syncing up properly. I’d say that’s a glitch until it gets confirmed, because that looks like garbage.

While I wouldn’t normally boycott a game for a minuscule change in the game animation, I wasn’t planning on buying SFV anyways. The discussion about censorship is more important to me.

And this, even if it was done intentionally, is quite harmless at best. We might have a bit of evidence if the changes were done to cover up Mika’s naughty bits, but it is a single animation, and who knows if it was due to the physics of the game itself.

I just don’t see the issue here.

Not purchasing the game, post censorship, if proven true, is a valid response. Mika’s ass slap being censored isn’t relevant; they could’ve put more clothes on Necalli or tuned down the boob physics and the underlying issue would still be, if this was done at the behest of the publisher/developer in response to fear or simply wanting to take the easy way, should people complain about a little T&A, that’s a problem. When you tell potential buyers, “this is part of the product” and then change anything in a way that simply removes from the overall experience, be it some animation changes, a graphical downgrade or what-have-you, you are presenting an altered product and consumers can choose whether or not they want this altered product.

I used to work for a marketing firm that taught us a good way to get someone interested in a product that we were selling in person was to let them hold the item, if even for a few seconds when showing them what it does, then taking away from them to continue your demonstration. It’s like saying, “Hey, you can have this, but under MY direction.” Once someone knows what they can have, it pisses them off to have it taken away.

If it were up to me, games would come with the option to show off 18+ content like how Brutal Legends lets you choose the language/gore content at the beginning or other titles let you choose whether or not you see nudity. I’d rather have a choice, is all.

How can they censor something that isn’t officially released? It would be one thing, if this game was out and then a patch changed it or if the NA version was covering up things the Japanese version showed… But until the game is “gold” nothing is being censored. The game is still being developed and nothing is final yet. Beta does not equal final.

Now granted, the changes most likely came from corporate pressure…. and I can see that as a censorship, but if the creator decides to change something by their own free will; well how is that censorship? We don’t know the truth at the moment, so we can’t call this censorship. All we can say is the game has been changed, which as a non finished game, has every right to do so. Calling this censorship is a way to make people click and read an article and is a little misleading, until the facts are out.

They’re still terribly depicted female characters, and the removal of the more gratuitous shots could be construed as “slightly toning it down” as they aren’t actually taking any steps to improve the depiction of these characters. It’s a step towards making the characters seem like less of a male-gaze laughing stock, but they’re still overall hyper-sexualized and crude. The removal of an ass-slap animation and a camera angle change shouldn’t really kill anybody’s hype for playing an upcoming release, and definitely isn’t censorship.

I’m not celebrating anything, I just find it a bit funny that there are so many people who like to cry out censorship whenever anything minor about the depiction of a character is changed. This is similar to the Skullgirls update that had less than 20 frames of animation changed, but still had various male gamers screaming that it was censored.
