KT and Nintendo seem to be the only ones bowing down so far. Nintendo has censored their games (and 3rd party releases) of games since the SNES.

This is a bigger problem than most of us think. If publishers won’t buy you the rights to publish your game in the west because of girls in swimsuits, you may stop putting girls in swimsuits in your games altogether, so this doesn’t become an issue, and you don’t lose a part of your market. Unless a huge amount of people change their habits and start importing in the light of these events (quite unlikely due to the language barrier), even Japanese developers, that so far have been unaffected (at least directly) by all this bullshit, may start autocensoring their games, leaving the few of us that really consider importing with no options left. Hopefully, they will be too worried about alienating their core audience (the Japanese themselves) to do that long enough for the storm to pass.

It’s fun watching my favorite industry kill itself with the downward spiral of…

– Non-customer gets upset at content of a game
– Company makes changes to please the angry non-customer
– Changes cause customers to not buy game
– Game doesn’t sell well and publisher starts overing less, making less money to produce more games
– Game company begins to shrink as revenue/margins decrease
– Game company releases new game

-Repeat until industry is dead

This won’t stop until game companies sack up and just produce what they want how they want and how the customer paying the bills want.

As long as there’s that “Asian” english-language version, we’re fine, though. “Worrysome” is not a strong enough word to describe this state of affairs. A company is outright saying they won’t translate something because they are worried of the backlash. Would a movie company do the same thing? Or a record label? Produce a work and then refuse to release it to other markets not because they lack the resources, but because of possible backlash?

I think not. They have money in their minds, and the more markets the more possible cash. Which is what Koei should have in their minds too: Not the backlash from people that won’t buy it, but the niche cash they can get from this and from milking DLC from losers that like swimsuits.

The asian English version of Meoro Chronicles had fantastic english subs, only a few minor hickups, the SAO infamous release if probably the out liner and I wouldn’t expect anything of the sort for DoAX3

Xseed and Marvelous have the guts, not so much other members of the Japanese gaming industry. Many of the others are willing and welcoming to localisations which cut out elements which may draw drama (even if it happens to be in games which had none or western games).

I’m on your side but we always outnumbered those trying to fuck over game releases unless it is a super duper niche H game, but never really had the outreach of opponents.

At this point any “massive backlash” the media has given games with “risque” content such as this one has just bolstered sales. This incident is special because the company has publicly admitted to giving up in response the turbulent waters in the western market and I won’t vote for it with my money because its sets a precedent for others.

For whatever reason, no one acknowledges mature content in other media being far beyond it and more in reach of minors but groups are keen to jump on a game almost arbitrarily.

You could at least buy the games which are fine you know? The Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 1 + 2 are good. The staples of Nintendo (Mario, Zelda etc) tend to be localised well when memes aren’t jammed in as well.

It’s far from an ideal solution and it doesn’t help the issue at the core but if this is going to be an even bigger trend in the future I hope Japan or Asia realizes that there IS a market for these games and the west and more and more games that wo7uld be “Problematic” have English subs planned for their release.

Asian English editions while getting more and more frequent and getting better translations are still relatively few compared to what is released so while this doesn’t help the situation in NA it would make it so at least the games are import friendly and readable.

DOAX is the most bland, typical fantasy possible. Hot girls doing stuff on the beach in swimsuits. Yet it’s been put on blast for being an example of extreme misogyny for years, and everyone here knows what would happen if this one came out in the west. My question then is, if women playing sports in bikinis is so harmful to society that people will actually cheer that it’s being kept off our shores, what the fuck are we allowed to fantasize about? What backslash will the company get for not bringing a game over? Nobody’s going to stop buying their games just because they don’t bring DOAX3 overseas. And if you think otherwise, I don’t think you are being realistic~.

I’ve been thinking the same for a while now. The content will always exist, but only in budget games like Senran Kagura, because those publishers don’t give a fuck about western sales. But if you like Capcom girls, or your Tifas and Lulus, they’ll start disappearing because, even if the moral argument fails on Japanese devs, the general idea of “this causes bad press in the west” still gets through.

Which is unfortunate for those of us who like playing hot grills in videogames, but aren’t willing to put up with bad games to do it.

Fair enough. I am still hoping for a region free future complete with quick localisations which don’t cut or edit things unnecessarily myself, but had good fun with Nintendo’s stuff as I find my way around the region lock.

For earlier portables, there was no problem. The Wii and GameCube are easy to get around. The 3DS? I imported a Japanese one, not a perfect solution but it was the right decision for me.

If the NX is region locked, I’ll probably still have one but end up having the right region to get games I want uncut while ignoring flawed releases. (More or less the Wii U plan – though I’m somewhat considering a Japanese Wii U if there isn’t a regin free method in the next year or so)

Well, they did give us English subs on the Asian version so thats the alternative. Not much different from the Moero games having English subs but not risking the backlash from releasing them here… at least they are still letting us play them in English since the hardcore fans will still import it.

Guess so. People are definitely getting hung up on the implications of this and how this is an established series where all of the DOAX games including DOAP were localised. Games with more girls and similar features.

While there is some truth to it, I think this really shows that a lot of the censoring in the last year hasn’t been from the western branch of companies but from the Japanese branch based on their perception of the western market.

On these forums after the Xenoblade thing I think, someone wrote to Nintendo of Germany and asked “what the hell” and the German branch said it was Nintendo of Japan’s doing. I think in Japan, they just see all the lunatics on Twitter, and just think that is the popular opinion.

The western division has to know it ultimately hurts them more to change these things or not release them at all. So what if some people on Twitter are upset, the amount of sales you make would vastly outweigh any negative feedback from an insular community. But because they are so loud, they seem much bigger than they actually are. So they have achieved exactly what they wanted.

There is clearly a viable ecchi games market in the west, especially on Vita, which this game is also releasing on. If they took the time to look at some of the numbers of Senran Kagura they might change their mind.

This is truly a sad day in gaming and i had the feeling that this game not being announced for the west was because of all the drama surrounding female characters in videogames. This has nothing to do with SJWs or GamerGate or feminism. The DoA Xtreme games have always sold poorly in the NA/EU regions: DoAX 2 barely cleared 100,000, and has a 53 on Metacritic. Tecmo is just finding a convenient excuse to stem the bleeding.

They seem to reuse assets from the main series and we’ve seen lewd games get away with sales under 100K in Japan alone but become a series before.

At best, we could guess that they did Paradise to keep costs low but there was already a trend of releasing one DOAX per generation anyway: 2003 (DOAX – Xbox), 2006 (DOAX2 – Xbox 360), 2010 (DOAP – PSP) and 2015 (DOAX3 – PS4/Vita).

Gaming localization has been shit lately anyways. Companies like KT always keep an eye out for what’s happening with other games being localized and reactions. I’m not saying this is a COMPLETELY good thing they’re not doing it, because they may influence more jap devs/companies to refuse to localized their games, but all we can do right now is get it from PlayAsia.

The way thins are with gaming now needs to change, and bad. Because if it don’t, all hope is lost.

It’s either the Japanese are overestimating the influences of the SJW clack-a-trons, or that they don’t trust their product well enough to stand the rigors of ‘negative’ backlash. Either way, this is a dark day for gaming.

We’ve seen this pattern happen before. Look up the Blade & Soul NA censorship. After stating that they wouldnt censor the game, they went back on their word and changed a number of side quests, changing some names within the game and even dumbing down the storyline. If KT’s reason for not bringing DoAX3 to the states changes from what the CM says, it just make them even worse for exploiting the situation and not being honest with their fanbase.

Eh, I feel like they wouldn’t do that, especially considering the English subs do come in handy for some Asian areas I’m sure. I mean, I doubt the Asian release gets the subtitles for importers like us.

The attention made her stupid rich which gave her enough power to influence the gaming industry. Ironically, Gamergate made things worse by giving her even more attention. After that, it wasn’t just some pissant blog talking about her anymore, now she’s on national TV. People who aren’t gamers or even geeks know who Anita is now, and that’s depressing.

The seeds of social justice have been sown, and now, it’s harvest season. Japanese game censorship is at an all time high, and now, we’ve reached the point where developers and publishers are too scared to release games here for fear of backlash.
