Capcom Reveals Dragon’s Dogma Online, a Free to Play RPG on PC, PS3, and PS4

Dragons-Dogma-Online-01-27-15-1

We’ve learned via Famitsu that Dragon’s Dogma Online is totally real.

Unfortunately for most fans of the series, your fears seem to be coming to life—it’s a freemium RPG with micro-transactions on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PC. The game is being directed by Kent Kinoshita, produced by Minae Matsukawa, and executive produced by Hiroyuki Kobayashi.

The large Famitsu reveal details the core mechanics, namely that players can form parties of four, and that Pawn’s do exist as well. There will be lobbies that support up to a hundred people, where players can unwind and meet up.

The currently confirmed jobs are as follows: Fighter, Hunter, Priest, and Shield Sage. Naturally, you can change your job as you see fit. Character customization has been upgraded as well.

While the game does have lobbies, it is an open world experience. There will be a multitude of quests, some of which allow for larger parties of 8 to partake.

We’ll keep you guys posted as footage and screenshots arrive.

Free 2 Play, MMO, 100 players… Just kill me already.

  • UUDDLRLR BASTART

    Free 2 fetch quest.

  • Mr0303

Oh, Capcom! You find new and inventive ways to disappoint both new and old fans of yours.

  • JackDandy

    FUCK nYOUnCAPCOM

  • landlock

Oh well. Think I’ll stick with Deep Down if it ever gets released.

  • CookieSoup

I’m not sure whether I should be amazed or disappointed at Capcom’s ability to systematically ruin every franchise they have. It’s like no one over there has a functioning brain.

  • Aaannnooonnnyyymmmooouuusss

feel like that girl in the matrix who knew they were going to pull her plug.nn”not like this, not like this.”

  • hefestos002 .

Hahahahahah oh geez. Thank God it’s capcom and i always expect the worst. In my case it was a phone game, but this is close enough.

  • TeddyBrosefvelt

Well thank god for BloodBorne and Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin

  • Touma

this is soul crushing :/. well you’re a fucking great stand alone title…..you died too young V___V. i was absorbed in this for 3 months and thats a rarity to my usual “one and done” way of playing games. i really feared this.

  • Misogynerd

    As I said before I wanted to play Dragon’s Dogma but… F2P…nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOiE0LCu6J0

  • Misogynerd

I think there’s a permanent gas leak over at the Capcom, Konami, Square Enix Mobile division and SEGA offices.

  • Siveon

    Hey Capcom?nnnFuck you.

  • Siveon

Deep Down is also a ftp online game, iirc.

  • landlock

    It’s also single-player and multiplayer.

  • NuclearKangaroo

so instead of porting dragon’s dogma to PC/PS4/XBO we get this?nnncapcom really do hate money dont they?

  • Siveon

By “single player” you mean, you could play alone? Because I doubt Capcom would let people play an online game without a connection.nnnAnd if that’s the case, there’s not much that separates the two besides gameplay.

  • Astralwyrm

It really is like Capcom sets out to sabotage their own success at every corner. I want to have hope for this game but Capcom has time after time proved such hope is folly.

  • Cy

God….dammit, Capcom. You are the worst fucking company in the world. Fuck. You.

  • Neojames82
  • Swirly Twirl

We ask for Dragon’s Dogma on PC they give us an F2P MMO.nI seriously hope they will port DD after this.

  • Game Guy

Dammit Capcom, you had one job and you fucked up.

  • Swirly Twirl

Turns out there’s no western release.nThis is just an avalanche of bad news.

  • lucben999

No, you don’t understand! The PC simply can’t handle the complexity of the online pawn system, I mean, a PC game with an online component? pfffff it would be too complicated.nnnWait…

  • Obbliglol

It’s like they were sent here to make the world suffer.

  • Juhata

    >F2P and based in microtransactionsnnwhywhywhywhywhywhywhywhywhywhywhywhywhywhywhywhywhywhywhywhywhywhywhywhywhywhywhynI want to fucking believe Capcom, but this is too much

  • Professional-Victim

Worst possible outcome. I would take nothing over this because then I would at least still have some hope left.

  • Stephen Smith

One of my favourite single-player games of the last gen has now become a typical MMO. Thanks a lot Capcom.

  • Carl B.

Exactly. I was really hoping they’d port it to PC. DD was insanely good and IMO, was better than Skyrim and deserves a nice 60fps w/modding PC version. I’d never leave my house if that came true.

  • Vyktar

I want to believe. I really do.

  • Tyrannikos

Read this, got angry and took a break. Came back three hours later and I’m still just as upset. I hate you, Capcom.

  • Koroma

    F2P+Capcom. a really bad combo

  • Siveon

It also needed an awesome “fully one-player” mode. Imagine creating 3 pawns instead of 1? It’d be great.

  • NuclearKangaroo

“better than skyrim”nnnwell thats isnt exactly hard to accomplish haha

  • ProtomanPaul

    Rest in Peace, The Dream.

  • MaidKillua

Well, Capcom have managed to once again kill all of my hopes and dreams…

  • MaidKillua

Any RPG with somewhat decent combat and textures that don’t take an hour to pop in can manage

  • Thanatos2k

Oh fuck this.nnThe one game in the past however many years that Capcom makes right, and they learn absolutely nothing. Not a damn thing.nnPeople want to buy a single player RPG and play it. By themselves. Maybe they jump online for a bit. Maybe you see someone here or there for a little bit like in Dark Souls.nnThey don’t want a multiplayer MMO F2P pile of garbage.nnPlease die Capcom. Die now, so that others may make games of your IPs properly.

  • Thanatos2k

You think Capcom is going to allow you to play the game entirely single player in a F2P game without fucking with your ability to play in some way?

  • Thanatos2k

Except that already happened with Breath of Fire 6. Now all their franchises are dead and lying on the floor.

  • Thanatos2k

Dragon’s Dogma has been released MULTIPLE times already. You want them to release it AGAIN?nnHow about a new game that doesn’t suck, like this one will?

  • NuclearKangaroo

consideirng they never released on PC and missed out on such huge audience, yes id like to see the game released again

  • Grey

Can’t say I am thrilled at this news.nnIt doesn’t mean the game might not still be fun or capture the Dragon’s Dogma spirit, since we’ve got nothing to go on about it, but it certainly isn’t encouraging. Certainly no personal interest on my part in a free to play, microtransaction heavy Dragon’s Dogma.

  • poofin

The first game(s) had so much going for it.

Had they only smoothed out some of the rougher edges (ie: pawn conversation, quests,) and developed the wider world, a stand alone sequel could have easily proven itself as a landmark in RPG history.

Instead, I fear this will only find its way into the ever-growing annals of AAA blunders. Victim to the same myopic executives that wield cherished franchises as they might a sack of doorknobs in their crusade for revenue.

Prove me wrong though, Capcom. Show us that you can design a F2P experience that doesn’t completely trivialize the very heart and soul of what made Dragon’s Dogma/DD:DA so very captivating to begin with.
