Nintendo Teams Up with Playboy to Promote Bayonetta 2

bayonetta 2 10-26-14-2

Sometimes a cross-promotion for something just makes sense, even though this particular cross promotion is kind of hilarious, considering Nintendo’s family friendly mentality.

We’ve learned that adult friendly Playboy is teaming up with Nintendo to promote the stellar and seductive heroine, Bayonetta, in her latest outing in Bayonetta 2.

Featured above and below, you can view shots of Playboy‘s “Resident Next Door,” Pamela Horton, who was honored as Miss October in 2012. Now she’s stepping into the heels of the titular witch, and owning that persona! Just click the images to make them larger:

Perhaps this is one more thing that indicates Nintendo might be embracing the adult side of gaming culture a bit more? We did recently find out that Bayonetta’s Nintendo-themed outfits weren’t sexy enough for the publisher.

On Playboy‘s official website, they’re asking fans to vote for their favorite photo from Pamela’s set through their official Facebook page. To mark a photo as your favorite all you have to do is like it. They haven’t mentioned what the winner gets, so we’ll have to wait to find out.

  • JCTXS

I don’t really see Bayonetta as attractive in that kind of sense, but this is still one of the best things to happen for gaming. It is just amusing to see Nintendo doing this. I wonder if they’ll only do this for 3rd party properties, since Ninty doesn’t own her.

  • ChJees

Definitely captures Bayonettas sass, confidence and personality there.

Considering that all the overhyped games (Titanfall, Watch Dogs, and Destiny) have failed to deliver Im tempted to agree with ya, just as long as we agree the Vita is the better handheld =3

For anyone who is shocked by this Id like to remind you all, that back in the day Nintendo ran love motels. So this isnt there first venture into the risque side of life.

Idea is great… nothing new really but still it is great idea. Don’t know if anyone remember but:

    http://i2.wp.com/www.unfinishedman.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/triss-merigold-playboy-2011.jpg

As for execution… it is bad. Like trashy porns from 90′. Photographer had 0 creativity, his photos are just simply bad. And that awful backgrounds… what the hell is that supposed to be?! Bayonetta is supposed to be sign of sexiness… I don’t see it here. Her poses are just like the ones from plastic dolls.

With good artist it could have been great. The one with Triss was good (not great but still better than bayonetta version)

GG feels like it’s fighting a war when video games as a form of entertainment has adhered toward the sexualization and/or objectification of women as the status quo since the moment gender could be conveyed. This war has already been won.

That being said the idea of three chicks on the fringe who have zero effect on the AAA titles you will buy speaks to some reactionary fear or some need to bully somebody. Books, TV, film all have critics. But books, shows, and movies with the aforementioned sexualization and objectification are still made.

Personally I love hot female characters whether it’s using them, saving, them, whatever. I don’t see the need to act like this is a real movement when nothing will really change the games I like to play.

the device itself is objectively a better handheld, but the software isn’t there at all.

  • Keichi Morisato

yes, yes they are, actually they view their consoles as toys than multimedia devices.

  • Keichi Morisato

they ran love motels in JAPAN, NOA wouldn’t normally touch this sort of promotional thing at all. actually MOJ is much more lax in what they allow to be on their consoles and in their games. only in the west did they treat sexuality like cooties, and shun anything to do with religion. the reason for that was because the original CEO on NOA was a staunch conservative and very anti religion.

  • Keichi Morisato

it wasn’t the fault of NOJ that is for sure, they really couldn’t give a damn.

  • Niall

The hardware is a lot more impressive, I’ll give it that.

  • Austin Wallace

I don’t like that the model’s legs are that of a normal human being and not freakishly out of proportion

  • Keichi Morisato

yeah… they could have at least phtoshopped that.

  • pablocr7

    THIS^^

  • Thanatos2k

    Shove it in Polygon’s face.

  • Thanatos2k

I think the Tomodachi Life idiocy taught them to ignore whatever nonsense that game journalists and SJWs whine about because they’ll never be happy.

So just do whatever they want.

  • Pekola

Do you understand what objectification is? And adding to that, do you believe sexualization is bad?

Moreover, what is your criteria for saying this is the status quo? Are you dividing scantly girls and modestly dressed ones? Are you taking their characterization into account? their role in the games they’re involved?

Also, here’s a thought. I’m not sure what you consider fringe. But one of those ladies is not only winning gaming awards, she’s also very well known for her critiques in the western gaming hemisphere.

Another one of those girls also has many friends in the indie scene, within gaming journalism and currently has the narrative support of the media and is sustained by many people in the gaming scene.

They’re not nobodies. And we can all agree that no one deserves bullying. HOWEVER, if your definition of bullying consists of not putting up with false narratives and antagonistic attitudes, then I’m going to have to disagree with you.

And lastly, seems to me like you’re fine with just playing games. Cool, at least you can ignore this and no harm done. Some of us used these sites.

But some of us are not okay with silencing. Some of us are silenced through society enough and gaming is our refuge.

Some of us do not take kindly to gross misinterpretations and fear mongering. None of us are anti-women.

A lot of us are anti-agenda/ideologies shoved down our throats. You don’t have to like it. And you certainly shouldn’t stand for bullying and harassment to anyone/anywhere.

But at the very least understand where a lot of people come from.

  • kirakila

I could almost sense some explosive butthurt in brewing ^^ Nintendo know exactly what they’re doin’.

PS Damn, I’m on brink of buying Wii U just for Bayo2!

  • Phelan

Hmm? Me givu a gutto fakku

  • kirakila

Yeah, it’s one of the character design special traits. Mari Shimazaki accented this in one of her posts on platinum blog:
“When a female character appears in an action game, her limbs often seem thin and short. That is why I tried to make her more appealing as an action game character by adjusting her proportions and extending her limbs.”

  • jneal57

I really love my Vita, I don’t regret picking it up at all. I still haven’t tried the PS4 remote play at all or even the PS TV. I’m definitely picking one at some point though.

  • Jake Martinez

The sincere answer is two fold:
There is the clear goal of GamerGate: Stopping press collusion and out right lying. Like, when Patricia Hernandez or Nathan Grayson write hype pieces for their friends and lovers, that’s fraud If they are telling you to buy a product. It’s a serious abuse of trust.
And Nathan is actually terrible – if you ignore Zoe Quinn entirely, the guy has written over half a dozen favourable articles about people he’s either dated or is close intimate friends with, talking about their products and organizations in a favourable way – of course without disclosure.
The other thing that is going on is what Marx would have called “Cultural Hegemony”. Essentially, gaming is a counter culture and it’s being assaulted by the bourgeois monoculture (the idea that this is the mainstream culture is actually false). The people doing this seem to be completely unaware that their personal politics are detrimental to artistic expression.
I’ll give you a great example if you follow comics:
Frank Miller wrote one of my favourite graphic novels of all time, “The Dark Knight Returns”. I’m very liberal so the book itself is sometimes hard to read as it dwells a bit on fascist territory, but it’s also amazingly well done. In his personal life Frank Miller is an unrepentant islamaphobe and hard right winger.
Now, in comics today, it has been taken over by these followers of identity politics so thoroughly that they control the political and artistic dialogue of the industry. People who hold , personal opinions and politics that are outside of the norm of the monoculture (so called social justice) are shunned, just like how they are shunning GamerGate right now. In this type of environment, a guy like Frank Miller would never, ever, get a job.
So, for those of us who are political, that’s the reason why we are so passionate about it. Like I said, my personal politics are actually far left. I just reject identity politics because I believe it is a tool of the bourgeois to set the working class against itself After all, as Marx would say – what does it matter your race or gender, if you are still being oppressed by class? The idea that a politically powerful, socially and economically mobile white woman, guarded and protected by all of our political institutions and laws is somehow “oppressed” because of video games should be laughable. The fact that anyone can make this argument with a straight face, while ignoring actual real human suffering just goes to show how decadent our society has become.
I’m serious, I’ve gone from being Left/Libertarian, to re-reading Marx with a critical eye because, damn it, he’s not wrong at all about what’s happening now. The idea that you need to be a conservative to oppose cultural colonialism, especially pernicious ideology that dehumanizes people in the name of justice, is just mind boggling.
