Zelda Producer is Promising to Have Less Tutorials in Zelda Wii U

The Legend of Zelda series has grown from a somewhat challenging series of open world games to attempting to make the latest games as accessible as possible – which is very easily a huge turnoff for returning fans of the series. This has usually been done in the form of extremely long tutorials, or possibly even more tutorials throughout the game.

Fortunately for the fans who are excited for the possibilities with the Wii U Zelda game, Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma confirmed that he is looking at throwing away traditions of the past with the tutorials as well. In a talk with Kotaku during this year’s E3 convention, we’ve learned that he regrets overloading players with so many tutorials:


“When we created Skyward Sword, I really felt the need to make sure that everyone playing the game understood it. But I also understand now, in hindsight, that when you go out and buy a game, you buy the game because you want to play it, and you don’t want to have any obstacles in the way.

And I guess it was received as a bit of an obstacle. In a game, it’s when you get stuck, when you want that help. And I kinda frontloaded all that in Skyward Sword, and it doesn’t really help to get that information when you don’t know what to do with it. So that was a real learning experience for me. So I’m going to be careful not to do that.”

The latest Zelda game, A Link Between Worlds, tried to have a more optional form of tutorials in the game’s Hint Ghosts, creatures that gave out advice to new or stuck players – but only when asked.

As a longtime Zelda fan, I think the easiest way for Aonuma and the team to approach this is to simply give a difficulty option in the beginning that will turn tutorials off for players choosing “normal” or above.
