Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal E3 2014 Hands-on Preview

Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal for the 3DS was actually really great! The game is an interesting combination of exploration and platforming, with a noticeable amount of classic Sonic style.  Throughout the level, you can change which character you’re playing on the fly, in order to solve puzzles and access secret areas.

The fighting in the game works kind of like Sonic Adventure, where you can basically “bounce” attack enemies one at a time.  Some enemies have shields, which can be removed by using an interesting energy tether that every character is equipped with, changing up the combat from time to time.  The tether can also be used to swing over gaps.

Throughout the levels, there are collectible items that can be used to upgrade your entire team at once, which really encourages replay, along with mini games that reward the player with collectibles once completed.

I’m happy to say that I plan on picking this up. However, I was not as pleased with the Wii U version, which you can read my hands-on impressions for here.
