7th Dragon English Fan Translation Now Available

Though the Nintendo DS was well known for its vast RPG library, a few top quality games did manage to slip through the cracks and were left stranded in Japan. While I might never get that translation of Nora and the Time Studio, it seems that someone has managed to release a fan translation patch for one of the best dungeon crawlers you’ve never played: 7th Dragon.

With music by Yuzo Koshiro and a gameplay system crafted by famed Phantasy Star and Skies of Arcadia mastermind Reiko Kodama, 7th Dragon was one of the most anticipated RPGs on the system and was frequently begged/asked/pleaded for by American fans wanting a localization. Even Etrian Odyssey’s Kazuya Niinou worked on the game, creating a bit of a dungeon crawler “Dream Team” that added significantly more hype to the game than it otherwise would have received. Now, thanks to the community, this gem can finally be played by English speakers.

Amusingly, this patch was originally mistaken for an April Fool’s joke. With the hosting site posting a fake Etrian Odyssey re-translation to “make it harder”, many were skeptical when 7th Dragon’s patch came out a day later. Rest assured though, it is quite real!
