While some enthusiasts and developers have been crying for the oncoming end of physical media, Sony and Panasonic have revealed a completely mind boggling breakthrough in disc based technology.

This new disc format is meant for archiving purposes, and while the initial run will start at a whopping 300 gigabytes, the development of the technology is planned to go all the way up to an entire terabyte. The first run is planned to ship next summer.

In comparison, a dual layer Blu-ray disc can hold up to 50GB, and the new Archival Disc is also developed with lots of protection against physical damage, as they are meant for backing up data for the long term. Sony and Panasonic confirmed that they new disc format will also have dust resistance, water resistance, and even resistance to humidity and temperature changes.

Lastly, consumer use for the disc is a bit hazy, as Sony and Panasonic are poising this disc to be used as a standard in the professional field, as they will promote it as the next-generation standard to industry professionals.
