The Old City is Like a Post Apocalyptic Version of Myst

the old city ss 1

Here’s yet another game for all you hipsters that drops gameplay for narration, story, and exploration. The Old City is a game that is described as philosophically founded, and that the story is the focus of the entire game. Instead of progressing through a world via gameplay mechanics, The Old City is simply a world and you, the player, a sewer dwelling isolationist who just decides to explore the above world.

The visuals will hopefully create an immersive world, as you explore and make choices on how you interact with the environment, the protagonist will self-narrate over different scenarios. There are no skill trees, weapons, or items, instead you’ll have to choose which pathway you walk down, although the scope of these pathways has not been disclosed outside of the game itself.

Check out a trailer for the game below:

Existentialist themes are heavily adopted in the story and narration of The Old City, and the developers are promising that the way they approach these themes are in a way that the industry typically ignored by the medium as a whole. PostMod’s goal with The Old City is to challenge the very principle of “gameplay first” that many gamers tend to abide by. Instead, they totally focus on the narrative, forcing players to approach the story as a whole.

The Old City is in development for PC.
