Matador is an Isometric Synth-Laden Blast From the Past

Matador is a game that is definitely not about using a red cloth to bait and subsequently dodge (and eventually kill) a bull for entertainment. In fact, when you see the game in action, you’ll probably either scoff at its art style, or yelp like a fashionable schoolgirl who saw a brilliant new pair of shoes in the store window.

The game is described as an “isometric real time action game”, and its definitely giving me that X-COM vibe, mixed with some pretty heavy industrial grade synthesizers that bring me back to my old PC gaming days. Clearly, the developers at Stellar Jockeys are fans of that era of strategy/tactical games and they’re not afraid to embrace it.

There’s a few things to take from Matador’s premise – you have to clear an entire city of your enemies in one night. You’ll be able to choose your vehicle, your jockey (pilot), weapons and defensive technology. Naturally, a fair bit of planning must come from this as you’ll fight four different factions across nine city districts.

The city in Matador is semi-roguelike in its layout and its challenges and enemy placement, meaning no two playthroughs will be the same. Level progression comes in the form of unlocking new options and equipment for the next mission into the city. There are no experience points and no saves – if you die, you must start over from the very beginning.

Well, that sounds both extremely promising and yet extremely punishing. If you’re as excited as I am about Matador, expect it to release sometime this Summer. You can view more about the game here on its official website, and you can also vote for it on Steam Greenlight here.
