Legend of the Lancer is a Medieval Metroidvania Epic

Legend of the Lancer is a 2D action adventure game with a big, nonlinear open world, in the same vein as various other Metroidvania games. The game is being developed by Gorilla Press Games, an indie developer from Fayetteville, North Carolina.

The story in Legend of the Lancer revolves around a land in turmoil following the death of the King of Umber. A tournament arises for knights to compete for the King’s Crown, ten thousand knights in fact!

You play as Sam Drexel, a young knight who stumbles upon the Magical Hilt, which gives him new skills and abilities. You can equip attachments to the lance so you can gain new abilities and powers, much like other games in this genre.

The story is inspired by the greats of the high fantasy genre like J.R.R. Tolkien, Miguel de Cervantes, George R.R. Martin and T.H. White. Despite the world in Legend of the Lancer being in turmoil, you will never get a break as the game is intended to be challenging, and yet open ended.

You can choose to blast through until the very end of the game without completing any side quests or alternate story arcs, but your ending will be different from people who are more thorough. The game is non-linear by nature and thusly you can approach the story in any way you want.

You also have a magical horse companion who can be used as both a mount and a weapon. You can also upgrade and equip your horse companion with things you find throughout the game, giving it better stats and abilities.

Gorilla Press are definitely promising a challenging but rewarding game, balancing story with excellent game design – beauty with clarity. The game plays like a Metroidvania style platformer/adventure game, meaning there will be a large open world to explore and discover secrets in.

You can check out their kickstarter pitch below:

Legend of the Lancer has an initial goal of $35,000, but it could also come to Playstation 3, Wii U, Vita and eventually Playstation 4.

If you want to throw your money at this excellent looking game, you can do so on their kickstarter page. We’re also doing an interview with the guys at Gorilla Press Games, so be on the look out for that.
